Mets, Athletics Expect To Finalize Jeurys Familia Trade By End Of Day

By Jeff Todd | July 21, 2018 at 12:45pm CDT

12:45pm: The two clubs expect to complete the deal by the end of the day, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Saturday, 11:08am: It’s “down to the medical reviews,” says ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, who expects that the deal should “sail through” once that’s finished. Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters today that Familia remains unavailable for today’s game.

Friday, 10:36pm: The A’s are indeed the team trying to wrap up an agreement, Martino tweets. “Barring [a] snag,” Familia will head to Oakland, he says. Olney hears similarly. (Twitter link.)

10:26pm: The structure of a deal is in place but it is not yet final, Olney tweets. Meanwhile, the Mets have informed reporters that nothing will be announced tonight (via Puma, on Twitter). Though Familia is saying his goodbyes in the clubhouse, he says he hasn’t been given any official word (via DiComo, on Twitter).

The Astros are not involved, Olney adds on Twitter.

10:13pm: There’s definitely some fire producing this smoke, as Mets skipper Mickey Callaway tells reporters he was advised not to deploy Familia owing to a possible trade. (Via Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, on Twitter.) It remains to be seen if a swap can be completed.

9:51pm: As Jeurys Familia watches from the bullpen rather than entering in a save situation, the Mets are working to finalize a deal to send him elsewhere, Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports on Twitter. The prospective destination is not yet known.

Earlier this evening, it was reported that the Athletics are a suitor for Familia, and all signs are currently pointing to a potential match with Oakland. Many other possibilities seem to have been dismissed. The sides are “well down the road,” per Andy Martino of SNY.tv (via Twitter), though ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets that the A’s are “not willing to take on as much money as another club in the bidding.”

Most other suitors seem questionable at best. The Cubs had been tied to Familia, but Olney says they are not involved at the moment. Also on the sidelines are the Braves, Olney adds on Twitter. Though he suggested the Giants might be a factor, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets that they are out owing to luxury tax considerations. Meanwhile, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com (via Twitter) and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (Twitter link) indicate that Boston isn’t deeply involved at the moment, though Crasnick tweets that they have been in the picture.

Despite the intrigue, it may be that talks won’t result in a deal. Andy Martino of SNY.tv tweets that, even if ultimately consummated, agreement may not be struck tonight. Clearly, though, talks are “too close to take a risk,” as a source puts it to Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter).

Familia is the top remaining trade candidate from MLBTR’s recent ranking of deadline assets. There has never been any question he’d be moved since the Mets fell out of contention in the NL East. Though he hasn’t been at his most dominant thus far, Familia is getting good results and showing his typical upper-nineties power sinker.

Teams weighing a move for Familia will surely consider him rather affordable at a $7.9MM salary with no future commitment. If not, Mets front office point-man John Ricco made clear today that the club is willing to pick up the tab if it can achieve sufficient prospect value. (Via Puma, on Twitter.)

This is a developing story …

It’s so weird sitting here watching the closer watch his team in a save situation.

I just hope he goes anywhere but Boston TYJE. He gets saves but reminds of Armando Benitez in that I’m nervous with him on the mound in a high stakes atmosphere situation. Sox already have Barnes and Kelly. I’m not suggesting Familia wouldn’t be an upgrade. Just not enough to drain what’s left of their young talent. Just heard it seems to be the A’s like has been reported already.

It’s very funny how people haven’t cottoned onto how calling the closer the back end of the pen instead of going “best reliever is the front” model yet, even though that’s the way the game has changed to be over the last 5-10 years. Sigh.

1- Oakland hasn’t acquired him. You’re saying they did.

2- you’re saying the As have a bad back end of the pen when they have one of the best in baseball.

3- you said Familia is a front end of the pen guy.

Of course, as someone pointed out, it looks like you just confused front end and back end of the pen.

It’s just that if there is a “front end” of a bullpen, it’s usually either a bad pitcher that plays when you’re down a bunch, or a decent but lesser bullpen guy to throw when the SP gets yanked early. Familia doesn’t really fit that description.

The front of the bullpen is the best reliever, the closer if you will. The back are the guys who keep getting shipped to AAA every other week. This is not confusing and a really stupid thing to pick at.

That’s not how you speak in baseball terms. The back end of the bullpen is the closer. Not the worst reliever. It’s referring to when in the game you use a reliever. Front end would be early innings. Back end would be towards the end of the game, so your closer. Get it?

If you haven’t noticed and you clearly haven’t go back and look the last 10 years with the teams who have won. Most didn’t make huge trades and if they did those players usually didn’t make a huge difference, for every Verlander like impact there’s 10 teams that didn’t make the World Series while depleting their farm for a rental who didn’t perform.

I don’t know if I completely agree. I can definitely see where you are coming from and it makes a ton of sense. But, do the Cubs win it all a couple of years ago without Chapman? How about the Royals with Zobrist and like you mentioned, the Astros and Verlander last year? Rentals, more often than not also become like Cueto with the Royals, or Darvish with the Dodgers last year (a quality pick up but he choked in the WS.). I would like to see a poll on this and it would make a great article on the rental trades the last 10 years and what they were able to contribute to their new teams. Plus, how the prospects they were traded for turned out, would be a nice bonus.

He did start the year ranked #60-#80 on all the prospect lists, but he has had a miserable year in AAA. His OPS is .611 with 3 HR (in the PCL) and 102k’s in 326 AB’s. He is now 23 and his power does not seem to be developing at all and his on base skills have continued their yearly trend down. I would be surprised to see him stay on any top 100 lists after all of the mid-season rankings come out. He seems to still be running on the fumes of his 2015 season that made him the Yankees top prospect. He still has very good defense but when his bat is that bad in the PCL it’s hard to see anyone making a case for him as a top prospect.

I think someone in the Soria or Shane Greene mold would be fair to expect, just for the sake of adding another decent arm that shouldn’t cost much. Maybe Adam Conley if they decide they want another lefty even though they already have a few.

Although I really want them to go for it and get someone like Givens or Kela to add even more long term control.

Seems like a value acquisition. Familia seems to crack when he’s under a lot of pressure, but seeming that Treinen will be the closer for the rest of the year, Familia might benefit from being a setup man. After all, his best career numbers have came from setting up Jenry Mejia.

I’m not trolling. I like the A’s. They do have a nice team. But realistically they are nowhere near as good as the Mariners. That’s is the only chance they have, the second wild card slot. And they would play the Yankees if they don’t overtake the east. Either way honestly they aren’t gonna contend.

        • jakec77

I don’t know that there is a huge separation between the Mariners and the A’s; the bigger problem is the 2nd wild card team gets the privilege of traveling to either Boston or NY to play a one game playoff against a much better team, and if they get past that then they face either the Astros or the other AL East team.
I get that in baseball anything can happen, and so if you have a shot to get into the post season you take it, but this year it’s hard to see the AL being won by anyone other than Hou, NYY, or Bos. Tough call for how much a team like the A’s really wants to surrender to make a wild card push, I guess part of the equation is that contending into late September hopefully juices attendance.

A’s are 4-2 vs Boston and should be 2-1 vs NYY if they made the right call on the Olson/Sanchez play. Those teams aren’t “way better” they’re “way more playing in an easy div with too many freebie wins vs Toronto and Baltimore”

Red Sox and Yankees are nowhere near as good as their records and I’d be very surprised if either team made the WS over the Astros, but the unbalanced schedule has to go, this is a perfect example,

I don’t understand the love. Trivino and Treinen locker in at set up and closer. Is this move to strengthen the beginning of bullpen? Is this maybe for a Treinen trade this offseason?

Not much confidence in Trevino clearly. He used to do multiple innings more. Think he will again.

What sucks is that Wall has another obstacle to clear

They have a ton of confidence in Trivino. It’s because all the rental starters are average or too expensive, and the top starters with control will be way too expensive. So they’re stacking their bullpen and asking their poor starting staff to only go through the lineup twice.

Bullpen guys get tired. They can’t pitch every game. You need at least 3 quality back end relievers to really feel secure.

I think the idea is to just stack as many quality bullpen arms as you can to allow your starters to exit early. If you don’t want to go all-out and acquire a top SP, this is a cheaper route. At least in terms of prospects.

Trivino and Treinen have had too many multi-inning Appearances since the team got hot. The A’s had to acquire another bullpen stud or risk burning Trivino and Treinen out before seasons end.

I hear ya. But besides him A’s C situation looks bleak for future, so I think he stays.

I’d bet Neuse is involved – solid 3B – as well as one of our other MI, maybe a live arm (Holmes or Shore)

Never happening, he’s the only long-term C they have. Lucroy also isn’t good anymore so he’s gone at end of year or even sooner. But they absolutely are never trading a guy literally the entire FO has said is their future C, and this isnt like Mejia at all, as Clev has quality cost controlled MLB options and the A’s don’t.

Think pitchers. I see Howard and Dunshee for Familia being plausible.

Please don’t let it be one of our top 4. Puk and Murphy are out, so that’s good. Luzardo killing it, so can’t imagine its him (but scared it is). Would hate it being Mateo too.

If it’s Barretto or Holmes, can live with it. Lazarito too as he’s so far off. Fowler I wouldnt mind either.

Barretto has moved to 2B and is clearly behind Puk and Luzardo, possibly Murphy, in value.

Puk is injured, his value is at its absolute lowest and Barreto is still only 22. If you can’t see at least the argument that Barreto is #1, then youre just being pedantic. Obviously people have their favorites but why even bother arguing with it? If its not outlandish then leave it be.

With this trade completed that counts as one less above average reliever the Dodgers can trade for. They do have a lot of time to make these deals but I am so eager to get a deal done and preferably get a reliever or 2 with control because if the Dodgers resign Kershaw(which is most likely happening) and possibly Machado(not as necessary although I’d like to see it) their team will def have a high chance of gettin back to the World Series, even if they don’t this year.

Odd that there doesn’t appear to be any updates on this. I get that it’s Saturday morning but Mets play at 1:00 today, you’d think they wouldn’t want to have this linger and be short in bullpen for a second day (I’m assuming that someone has been summoned from Vegas in anticipation of being added to the roster).
Particularly since this series against the Yankees is the closest thing the Mets have to meaningful games for the rest of the season.

As for Familia, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was back with the Mets this offseason.

Smart players always say they like playing somewhere after they are traded. His is a free agent so of course he would want the Mets to resign him if the price is right. Why burn bridges when you are becoming a free agent.

As per Joel Sherman Twitter, it would seem that the hold up is the A’s doctors being on Pacific Time. Guess can’t really blame Mets for that, but given that Lugo and Gsellman are likely unavailable today, having Familia still on the roster but not able to use him could be rough.

MLB should have a rule for this contingency- not for the Mets sake, their season is over, but if the Mets lose today and being short in the bullpen is an obvious culprit I’d be a little annoyed if I’m in the Red Sox front office.
