Jeurys Familia Training For MLB Comeback

Veteran right-hander Jeurys Familia didn’t pitch in affiliated ball last season and didn’t pitch in 2023 beyond the 12 2/3 innings he tossed for the A’s before being released that May. However, the 35-year-old righty has been working out and training ahead of a hopeful MLB comeback, reports Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com.

While Familia’s action has been limited in recent years, he did toss nine innings for Mexico City’s Diablos Rojos in the Mexican League last year, and he’s pitched for los Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League in each of the past two offseasons. He tossed 8 1/3 frames in this year’s DWL and allowed four runs on eight hits and just one walk with five punchouts.

It’s been nearly four year since Familia last enjoyed a healthy, productive season in the majors. He posted ERAs north of 6.00 in 2022-23, but in 2021 the right-hander logged 59 1/3 innings with a 3.94 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate, 10.3% walk rate, 51% grounder rate, 11 holds and a save for the Mets.

From 2014-21, Familia was a generally reliable late-inning power arm who missed bats and piled up grounders at a lofty rate. He combined for a 3.20 earned run average, 25.2% strikeout rate, 10.5% walk rate, 55.5% ground-ball rate, 124 saves and 63 holds over that eight-year period — all while averaging better than 96 mph on his heavy sinker.

Time will tell whether Familia can regain that form. His velocity dropped substantially during his 2022-23 struggles; that sinker sat 95.2 mph in 2022 and 93.8 mph in 2023. In 2023, all of his pitches (sinker, four-seamer, splitter, slider) were down about three miles per hour relative to their 2021 levels. Familia’s command, or rather lack thereof, was his biggest issue in 2023, however. He faced 64 batters and issued 13 walks (20.3%) while plunking another. His inability to locate the ball was also apparent in his career-worst 19.6% opponents’ chase rate on pitches off the plate. When Familia missed, he was missing by wide margins.

Even with those red flags, however, Familia is surely looking at a minor league contract and non-roster invitation, leaving no real risk for a team to take a look if he’s sufficiently built up. (Presumably, after he pitched in the DWL, that is indeed the case.) Familia might well need to use Triple-A as a proving ground before climbing back to the big leagues, but his track record alone should lead to some interest if he’s indeed intent on pursuing a return to the majors.

A’s Designate Jeurys Familia, Domingo Acevedo For Assignment

The Athletics are shaking up their bullpen, designating right-handers Jeurys Familia and Domingo Acevedo for assignment, per a team announcement. Righty Adam Oller was also optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. In a set of corresponding moves, righties Spencer Patton, Austin Pruitt and Rico Garcia have all had their contracts selected from Triple-A.

Familia, 33, returned to the A’s for a second stint late in spring training, after the D-backs cut him loose late in spring training. The former Mets closer had enjoyed a strong showing in camp with Arizona and landed a big league deal with Oakland, but things haven’t gone well in his return to the Coliseum. Through 12 2/3 innings, Familia has been tagged for a 6.39 ERA, due in no small part to a sky-high 20.3% walk rate.

It’s been a tough two years for Familia, who was sharp with the Mets from 2020-21 but was roughed up for a 6.09 ERA in 44 1/3 frames between the Phillies and Red Sox in 2022. Familia’s fastball, which once averaged better than 97 mph, sat at what was then a career-low 95.6 mph between those two teams last year. This season, he’s averaged 94.8 mph on the pitch.

As for the 29-year-old Acevedo, his bottom-line run prevention numbers are even more jarring. In 9 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, he’s been clobbered for 11 runs on 16 hits (two homers), a pair of walks and a hit batter with seven punchouts. The resulting 10.61 ERA is more than triple the strong 3.33 mark he posted in 67 2/3 innings for the A’s during the 2022 season.

Acevedo’s velocity hasn’t changed — his 93.2 mph average heater is an exact match with his 2022 velocity — nor has he made any radical alterations to his pitch selection/usage. However, he’s seen his swinging-strike rate plummet from 15.6% to 8.8%, while his opponents’ chase rate has fallen from 35.6% to 29%. While he’s undoubtedly had some poor fortune in terms of batted balls (.400 BABIP), Acevedo also just isn’t missing many bats and is getting chases off the plate at a below-average rate after excelling in both those areas a year ago.

Pruitt returns to the A’s for a second season after spending the bulk of the 2022 campaign in their bullpen and pitching to a 4.23 ERA in 55 1/3 innings. The A’s removed him from the 40-man roster but re-signed him to a minor league deal this past offseason, and he’s begun the year with a 2.30 ERA, 25.8% strikeout rate and 8.1% walk rate in 15 2/3 innings of Triple-A ball. Pruitt has only fanned 17.4% of his Major League opponents, so he’s not likely to keep missing bats at this level, but he also boasts a very strong 5.3% walk rate in his MLB career.

The 35-year-old Patton has had the most MLB experience in recent seasons. Patton, who starred for NPB’s Yokohama DeNA BayStars for several years before returning to MLB with the Rangers in 2021, pitched to a 3.83 ERA in 49 1/3 innings with Texas in 2021-22. He had a very strong ’21 season, fanning 27.9% of his opponents against an 8.7% walk rate, but Patton’s velocity dipped by more than a mile per hour in 2022 as his walk and strikeout rates spiked in the wrong directions. Through 8 1/3 innings with Las Vegas this season, he’s allowed four runs on 11 hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts.

Garcia, 29, has appeared in three big league seasons, splitting a total of 24 innings between the Rockies, Giants and Orioles. He has a grisly 6.38 ERA in that time and has issued more walks than strikeouts. However, he’s sitting on a 2.03 ERA in 13 1/3 innings so far in Las Vegas, with a hefty 32.8% strikeout rate and 18% swinging-strike rate against a more troublesome 15.5% walk rate.

Athletics Sign Jeurys Familia

TODAY: The Athletics officially announced Familia’s signing.  To create 40-man roster space, left-hander Kirby Snead was placed on the 60-day injured list due to a strained throwing shoulder.  Snead hasn’t thrown for over a month since first suffering the strain in Spring Training action.

MARCH 25: The A’s have signed right-hander Jeurys Familia to a Major League contract, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray (Twitter link).  MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos reported earlier today that Familia was present in the Athletics’ clubhouse.  Familia is represented by ACES.

It was a pretty quick trip through free agency for Familia, as he was only released yesterday from his previous minor league deal with the Diamondbacks.  Since Familia could’ve opted out of that minors deal today if Arizona hadn’t included him on its Opening Day roster, the D’Backs chose to release Familia and give him a bit of a jump on the rest of the Article XX(B) market.

That head start has now paid off in a guaranteed MLB contract for the 33-year-old reliever, as well as a familiar landing spot.  Familia previously pitched for the A’s in 2018, joining the team after a trade deadline swap with the Mets.  Over his previous 31 1/3 innings in the green-and-gold, Familia posted a 3.45 ERA, helping Oakland reach the AL wild card game.

Since that 2018 season, Familia’s performance has been quite inconsistent, with a couple of okay seasons in 2020-21 (at least in terms of bottom-line results) sandwiched in between rough years in both 2019 and 2022.  Last season, Familia struggled to a 6.09 ERA over 44 1/3 combined innings with the Phillies and Red Sox, with below-average walk and strikeout rates as well as some of the most hard contact allowed of any pitcher in baseball.

Familia did look quite a bit sharper this spring in Arizona’s camp, with a 1.35 ERA over 6 2/3 frames of work.  It wasn’t enough to win him a job in the Diamondbacks bullpen, but Familia will now bring some veteran knowhow to an Athletics relief corps that is short on MLB experience.  There is enough uncertainty in Oakland’s bullpen that it might not be a surprise if Familia ends up earning some save chances at some point, and given how the A’s are still in rebuild mode, Familia certainly looks like a potential trade chip this summer if he is pitching well.

D-backs To Release Jeurys Familia

The Diamondbacks are set to release veteran reliever Jeurys Familia, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic (Twitter link). Familia is one of a few dozen veterans with an opt-out in his contract tomorrow but had been informed by the club that he would not make the Opening Day roster. They’ll cut him loose a day early and give him some extra time to latch on with a new organization.

Familia, 33, had a strong spring showing with Arizona, pitching six innings of one-run ball with just three hits and one walk against four strikeouts. Those sharp results apparently weren’t enough to sway the Snakes into putting him on the Opening Day roster, so he’ll instead return to the free-agent market in search of an opportunity with another club in need of some bullpen help.

Solid as Familia was this spring, he’s coming off the worst season of his career. In 44 1/3 innings between the Phillies and Red Sox, Familia was tagged for an ugly 6.09 ERA. His 20.1% strikeout rate was the second-lowest mark he’s posted in a full season, as was his 10.7% swinging-strike rate. Familia’s 10.8% walk rate was well north of the league average, and his 95.6 mph average fastball velocity was a personal-low for the former Mets closer.

Familia did have a nice season as recently as 2021 (3.94 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate, 10.2% walk rate in 59 1/3 innings), and his broader track record at the MLB level is impressive overall. The 2016 All-Star boasts a 3.51 ERA, 125 saves, 70 holds and a 24.4% strikeout rate in 543 big league frames.

Diamondbacks Sign Jeurys Familia To Minor League Deal

5:22pm: Familia will make $1.5MM if he makes it to the majors with $500K in performance bonuses also available, per Joel Sherman of The New York Post.

4:55pm: The Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Jeurys Familia to a minor league deal, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The ACES client will receive an invitation to major league Spring Training.

Familia, 33, has had many good years in the big leagues but is coming off a terrible campaign in 2022. From 2014 to 2021, he made 482 appearances, mostly with the Mets, with a 3.20 ERA in that time. His 10.5% walk rate was a bit on the high side but he struck out 25.2% of batters faced in that time and got grounders on 55.5% of balls in play.

Last year, however, was a completely different story. He signed a $6MM deal with the Phillies and made 38 appearances for them but posted a 6.09 ERA in that time while his strikeout rate fell to 20.9%. He was released in August and latched on with the Red Sox for a while but posted a 6.10 ERA in 10 appearances for them. A .386 batting average on balls in play could have made things look worse than they really were, but it’s not like everything can be explained away by bad luck. Familia’s Statcast page is an icy blue, since he was in the third percentile in terms of hard hit rate, fourth percentile for average exit velocity and eighth percentile in barrel rate.

The Diamondbacks had a rough showing from their bullpen last year. Their relievers posted a collective 4.58 ERA for the year, a mark that bested just five other teams in the majors. They’ve made a few moves to address the relief corps for the upcoming season, including signing Miguel Castro and Scott McGough, grabbing Cole Sulser off waivers and trading for Carlos Vargas. By signing Familia, they’ve essentially taken a no-risk flier on a veteran with a lengthy track record of success. He’ll give them some extra depth without taking up a roster spot for the time being.

Jeurys Familia Elects Free Agency

Sept. 16: Familia cleared waivers and rejected an outright assignment in favor of free agency, tweets Cotillo.

Sept. 13: The Red Sox have designated reliever Jeurys Familia for assignment, the hurler himself told reporters (including Chris Cotillo of MassLive). The club has not officially announced the move. Boston’s 40-man roster tally drops to 39.

Familia spent around a month on Boston’s big league roster. He opened the season with the Phillies but was released by Philadelphia in early August after posting a 6.09 ERA across 34 innings. Within a few days, Familia signed a minor league deal with Boston and was quickly promoted back to the big leagues. He’s continued to struggle, though, allowing eight runs (seven earned) with seven walks and eight strikeouts over 10 appearances in a Boston uniform.

That included a tough outing during tonight’s matchup with the Yankees. Called upon in the tenth inning, Familia issued a leadoff walk to Aaron Hicks. After inducing a Marwin González double play and intentionally walking Aaron Judge, he unintentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to load the bases. Familia then coughed up a three-run double to Gleyber Torres before recording the final out. He took the loss in a 7-6 Yankees win.

In the wake of that disappointing outing, the Red Sox elected to move on. The 32-year-old is headed for free agency at the end of the season regardless, and any faint hope the Sox had of making a playoff push a month ago has long since been dashed. Rather than continuing to devote a bullpen spot to a scuffling veteran, Boston will turn elsewhere. Cotillo reports that the Sox will go with 13 pitchers for the time being, with the recently-claimed Yu Chang taking the vacated active roster spot.

Familia will land on waivers in the next few days, but his struggles in both Philadelphia and Boston make it a virtual lock he’ll clear. With only a few weeks remaining on the schedule, he plans to turn his attention to the upcoming offseason and opportunities for 2023 (relayed by Jahmai Webster of NESN).

While Familia’s 2022 results have been subpar, he’s only a season removed from being an effective reliever. Familia posted a 3.94 ERA across 59 1/3 innings with the Mets in 2021, striking out 27.5% of batters faced that year. His strikeouts are well down this season, but he’s averaged north of 95 MPH on his fastball. At the very least, he figures to find minor league offers this winter as a result of his relatively recent success and extant arm strength.

Red Sox Select Jeurys Familia

Just a few days after signing Jeurys Familia to a minor league contract, the Red Sox have selected the veteran right-hander to the big league roster.  In corresponding moves, right-hander Kaleb Ort was optioned to Triple-A, and Chris Sale (who recently underwent season-ending wrist surgery) was moved to the 60-day injured list.

Familia is looking for a new beginning after posting a 6.09 ERA over 34 innings with the Phillies this season.  Philadelphia signed the righty to a one-year, $6MM this past offseason, but ended up releasing Familia last week.  In signing Familia and promoting him to the MLB roster, the Red Sox now owe him just the prorated portion of the minimum salary, while the Phils are responsible for the remainder of that $6MM total.

It’s been a rough season for Familia, who has posted below-average walk and strikeout rates while allowing more hard contact than almost any pitcher in baseball.  Familia is still averaging 95.7mph on his fastball, but that has been the only one of his pitches that has still been effective, as per Statcast’s metrics.  Batters have been teeing off on Familia’s sinker, which has been his primary pitch for the majority of his career (and he still throws the sinker over 50 percent of the time).

Still, at least a couple of Familia’s metrics are more favorable, as his 3.91 SIERA and an eye-popping .408 BABIP indicate some level of bad luck, despite all of that hard contact.  There isn’t much risk for the Red Sox in seeing if Familia can still contribute at the big league level, or at least provide a fresh arm within what has been a pretty middling Boston relief corps.

Red Sox Sign Jeurys Familia To Minor League Deal

The Red Sox have signed right-hander Jeurys Familia to a minor league deal, per Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Chris Cotillo of MassLive relays that it’s a minor league deal.

Familia, 32, is a veteran who is in his 11th MLB season, having previously donned the jerseys of the Mets, A’s and Phillies. For his career, he’s thrown 532 2/3 innings with a 3.46 ERA, 24.5% strikeout rate, 10.8% walk rate and 54.7% ground ball rate. His best stretch was with the Mets from 2014 to 2018, though his performance has fallen off since then.

A free agent this offseason, Familia was signed by the Phillies to a one-year deal that came with a $6MM guarantee and incentives. Through 34 innings on the year, Familia has registered an ERA of 6.09, along with a 20.9% strikeout rate, 9.5% walk rate and 48.1% ground ball rate. He was designated for assignment and then released last week.

The Red Sox will be taking a chance that Familia can bounce back, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility. He has a .408 batting average on balls in play this year, well above his .303 career rate. He also has a strand rate of just 68.3% on the season, compared to a 74.9% clip for his career. As such, the advanced metrics feel he deserved better than that 6.09 ERA, as he has a 4.71 xERA, 4.88 FIP, 4.15 xFIP and 3.91 SIERA.

Since Familia was released by the Phillies, they are paying out the remainder of his contract. If the Red Sox eventually select him to the big league club, they will only be responsible for the prorated league minimum, with that amount being subtracted from what Philly pays. That means this is effectively a no-cost way for Boston to improve its bullpen depth.

Phillies Release Odubel Herrera, Jeurys Familia

The Phillies have released outfielder Odubel Herrera and right-hander Jeurys Familia.  Righty Ryan Sherriff has also been outrighted to Triple-A.  All three players were designated for assignment earlier this week.

This is the second time within the last year that the Phils have officially parted ways with Herrera, as they declined their $11.5MM club option last fall and then re-signed him for only $1.75MM in March.  It would seem like today’s release will bring an end to Herrera’s run in the organization after seven-plus years, as Philadelphia is certainly hoping that trade deadline acquisition Brandon Marsh can be a long-term answer in center field.

Herrera hit .238/.279/.378 over 197 PA this season, seeing time in center field and left field.  Familia was also struggling, with a 6.09 ERA in 34 innings after signing a one-year, $6MM free agent deal with the Phillies during the offseason.

Familia is still owed around $2MM of that salary, though a new team will have to cover just the prorated MLB minimum salary, while the Phillies absorb the rest.  The same is true of the roughly $580K owed to Herrera on the remainder of his deal.  Claiming either player off DFA waivers would have put the new team on the hook for the rest of the remaining salary, so while neither Herrera or Familia represents a huge financial outlay, it is still understandable why other teams would prefer to stick the Phillies with much of the bill.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see either player catch on elsewhere, though Familia is seemingly the likelier of the two to land with a new club.  Herrera hasn’t been a terribly effective player since 2017, while Familia still had solid bottom-line numbers with the Mets as recently as 2021.  With pretty much all of Familia’s secondary metrics trending downward, however, clubs must have concerns over what the 32-year-old still has in the tank.

Phillies Designate Jeurys Familia

The Phillies have designated right-hander Jeurys Familia for assignment, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber reports (Twitter link).  Right-hander Francisco Morales and outfielder Mickey Moniak will fill in the open spots on the Phillies’ roster tonight, replacing Familia and the also-designated Odubel Herrera.

Familia signed a one-year, $6MM contract with the Phillies in March, joining an NL East rival after spending almost his entire career with the Mets.  At his best, Familia was one of the top relievers in baseball, both as a setup man and as a closer, highlighted by a 51-save, All-Star season in 2016.

The righty had become much more inconsistent since those prime years, but still had a 3.94 ERA and an above-average strikeout rate over 59 1/3 frames with New York in 2021.  A big dropoff in hard-contract rate, however, was a red flag in hindsight, as Familia has struggled badly since joining the Phillies.  Between a 6.09 ERA and a blue-tinged Statcast page, not much has gone right for Familia, and he has added to the Phillies’ list of struggling relievers in recent years.  Familia has also had a drop in velocity, as his 95.4 mph average fastball (while still big compared to most pitchers) is down from 96.7 mph last year.

With a little over $2MM still owed on Familia’s contract, the 32-year-old is very likely to pass through the DFA wire without a claim, so the Phillies will be responsible for the remainder of that salary.  A team that signs Familia after the fact would then owe him just the prorated minimum salary, and given his past track record, it seems like another club is likely to give Familia a look to see if a change of scenery would help.
