Angels Select Contract Of Osmer Morales

By Jeff Todd | August 13, 2018 at 7:14pm CDT

The Angels have selected the contract of right-hander Osmer Morales, per a club announcement. Fellow righty Eduardo Paredes was optioned to create active roster space.

Morales, 25, receives his first shot at the majors despite the fact that he’s carrying only a 6.22 ERA in 92 2/3 Triple-A frames on the season. He has long carried appealing K/BB rates in the minors, but is generating just 8.1 K/9 against 5.1 BB/9 thus far this year.

As the Halos get a look at Morales, they’ll send the 23-year-old Paredes back to Triple-A. He has generally performed well in the minors, but carries only a 5.53 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 40 2/3 MLB innings over the past two seasons.

So he’s a lateral move from Paredes.

Why did he get the promotion despite a 6.22 ERA? Even his 5.66 FIP, and 5.73 xFIP are atrocious.

All because “appealing K/BB rates in the minors” Are the Angels tanking?

They’ve been desperate for several years now.

Remember when they won free agency? A good laugh was had by all.

Just look at the Salt Lake roster and try to figure out who else they could recall. At the moment they have just three starting pitchers. There are no alternatives at AAA. With off days they can get by with 4 starters including Morales until next week. They are probably combing the waiver wires for another starter. Too many injuries.

Yankees promoted Jonathan Loaisiga to make SP MLB debut from Double-A. When Someone’s that bad in a “lost” season, why not think outside the box. Maybe someone with higher upside from AA? I know Yanks’ farm system is better, but Loaisiga’s been successful, and proved it can done. Yanks arent only ones to do this

Morales was already on the 40-man. none of their other AAA pitchers are that the Angels havent already gotten a look at. the only other 40 man pitcher is Jesus Castillo in AA and he is just coming off an injury and wouldnt be ready anyway.

Morales was not originally on the 40-man.

The Angels don’t have many good starters in AA or AAA. There’s Griffin Canning, of course, but he’s only in his first professional season. But I don’t think Morales is the right guy. I would’ve preferred Jose Suarez or Jesus Castillo.

Tanking? Are you stupid?! They’ve lost six starters (all or most of the season), their top two relievers all season, they’re the only team running with two rookie catchers and Trout’s on the dl.
Yet, they’ve got a similar record to the Nats , Giants and 5 wins less than the beloved Dodgers. and with all those problems, will probably finish above 500.

Who? Heany and Barria only. The rest are patchwork from signings and 3A. Otani, Shoemaker, C. J. Ramirez, Skaggs, Myers, Bridwell all on dl. Ohtani hitting only.

Eppler has turned these kind of guys into solid spot starters or long inning relief guys aka jc Ramirez Felix Pena, hmmm let me listen to you or a guy named Billy Eppler who has 15+ years moving up from a scout to a front office executive every team tries things like this so go home with that

this crap continues. c’mon there’s nothing appealing here. we’re scrapping the bottom of the barrel. McGuire, Paredes, even Robles and Pena are essentially minor league pitchers.

Should of recalled Rhodes. Morales will only go two innings at most anyway
