Blue Jays Designate Brandon Cumpton For Assignment

By Steve Adams | August 13, 2018 at 4:17pm CDT

The Blue Jays announced Monday that they’ve designated right-hander Brandon Cumpton for assignment. His spot on the roster will go to pitching prospect Sean Reid-Foley, whose contract has been formally selected from Triple-A Buffalo. Right-hander Danny Barnes was optioned to Buffalo to open a spot on the active roster.

Cumpton, 29, made just one appearance for the Jays at the big league level this year, allowing a run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings back on July 31. He joined the Jays organization as a minor league free agent six weeks ago after previously having been cut loose by the Rangers. Formerly a ninth-round pick by the Pirates, Cumpton showed some promise with a 2.05 ERA and a 22-to-5 K/BB ratio through 30 2/3 innings in his MLB debut back in 2013, but his career has been slowed substantially by both Tommy John surgery and right shoulder surgery, which combined to keep him out of the big leagues entirely from 2015-17.

Reid-Foley’s promotion was reported yesterday. He’ll be one of two intriguing young prospects joining the Jays for his MLB debut, and he’ll take the mound tonight to start for Toronto against the Royals. Ranked by Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com as the No. 10 prospect in a deep Blue Jays farm system, Reid-Foley has cut through both Double-A and Triple-A lineups in 2018, averaging better than 10 strikeouts per nine innings with impressive secondary statistics to back up his already-strong 2.98 ERA.

I think this dude if he’s released should go elsewhere maybe japan, Korea, or the independent leagues!

Why? Why not keep trying since he’s finally healthy and teams have seen that?

Cumpton has been rough in triple a this season

The Jays are headed in the right direction (frankly, took them long enough). With what they have coming, and some still-attractive trade chips, they can get healthy quickly. It’s going to be tough in the AL East for the next couple of years, but they can build a core for 20121 or so….and that’s really not that far away.

They should’ve kept Cumpton and Barnes on the roster and dumped Biagini and Petricka. Those two have had lots of opportunities and they’ve shown nothing this year. Biagini has been garbage since last year.

Santos needs to be the first one gone.

And I think I’d give Biagini one more shot next year. Put him in the bullpen and leave him there. If he doesn’t get back to his 2016 form, it’s time to cut bait.

Out of respect for MLBTR I will refrain from conceiving any jokes about his last name. I’ll just pull out of this thread and keep it moving.

Cumpton is another guy who could do decently if given a chance. He is an example of someone who lost a full two years in the prime of his career to injury. The time slips away and he no longer has as much potential for any particular organization as no one wants to invest the time.Hopefully he can take advantage of any future opportunity that he might get because pitchers in his situation are not promised any others.

For Cumpton, Tommy John plus shoulder surgery, that is a high mountain to climb back up. He needs innings to get it back together. The Major Leagues is not that place.

A month ago I said it was time for some of the youth to get a shot, rather than the Cumptons and Hauschilds and Olivers. You disagreed.

Then Sean Reid-Foley comes up, and Pannone prior to that. Now you agree? SMH…

JDGoat is correct; drop Santos and call up a 20-something coming through the system, give him a chance to sink or swim. They might be a future piece in the bullpen, they might not. Now is the time to find out.
