NL Notes: Brewers, Fiers, Mets, Reyes, Padres

By Connor Byrne | August 8, 2018 at 7:07pm CDT

The latest on a few National League clubs…

  • The Brewers were “thought to be” vying for then-Tigers right-hander Mike Fiers before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press writes. Fiers didn’t end up going to the the Brewers or any other team that day; instead, he ultimately headed to Oakland, which Fenech notes was the only team competing with Milwaukee for his services at the deadline, in a deal on Monday. Had he gone to the Brewers, it would have represented a homecoming of sorts for the 33-year-old Fiers, whom Milwaukee drafted in the 22nd round in 2009 and who later pitched with the team from 2011-15.
  • Although he has been among the worst players in baseball this season, 35-year-old infielder Jose Reyes is hopeful of continuing his career in 2019 and would like to do so with the Mets. “Of course I’d want to come back,” Reyes told Howie Kussoy of the New York Post this week. “My body feels good. I feel healthy. We’ll see if there’s an opportunity.” An opportunity could be difficult to come by next year for Reyes, a .186/.261/.281 hitter across 184 plate appearances this season. Despite that disastrous production, though, the Mets haven’t been willing to cut the cord on the longtime franchise staple thus far.
  • The Padres plan to select righty Jacob Nix from Triple-A El Paso to make his major league debut in a start against the Phillies on Friday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. The Friars have an open spot on their 40-man roster, so adding Nix wouldn’t force them to make a corresponding move in that regard. Nix joined the Padres in the third round of the 2015 draft and now ranks as their 14th-best prospect at MLB.com. The 22-year-old has spent most of this season at the Double-A level, where he has logged a 2.05 ERA/3.41 FIP with 7.01 K/9, 1.54 BB/9 and a 45.2 percent groundball rate in 52 2/3 innings.

can not understand why reyes is on this roster
at this time, teaching Rosario? I hope not, leadership?
skills? selling tickets? trade in august? no way
give him a send off? they better not
this is a joke of an organization and it is
      getting worse every day
if they do not tear it down and start over
they are fools and so are the people who
continue to think they can win
I mean they tried to build around pitching
but forgot that you need defense up the
middle to do so, you need defense to build
around pitching, come on, they are and have
been a bottom 3 defensive team for years, they
are old and bad, flores batting 4th and playing
first – and they are selling that – I mean that is
their advertising and he is being called some kind
of magic man for his late game homers, I mean
come on, that is all they have, keith is embarrassed
to have to say it, flores is a good backup infielder
not a starter and certainly not someone you use as

In before Reyes gets destroyed as reason for all Mets’ failure. (When talking out your frustration on Reyes, remember he’s part of systematic problem, not the ONLY Mets problem…)

Although fair to question his MLB career, 2019

The marlins were such a disaster with Reyes that they got rid of him in the first year of a 5 year contract The bluejays were under 500 with Reyes, but made it to the ALCS the following two years after they got rid of him Reyes was the reason for the historic collapses of 2007 and 2008 hit under 200 during both collapses he made the team lack focus and urgency . Rockies got 16 games worse after Reyes showed up . 2017 mets were supposed to be World Series contenders instead finish 22 games under 500 with Reyes . 2018 mets once again significantly underachieving Jose Reyes is by far the worst thing to ever happen to the Mets he has been destroying teams for decades Reyes is the rare athlete that infects guys around him his laughing and overall personality doesn’t allow guys to have the right mindset to perform at their highest capabilities which is why it’s been 2 decades of the same underachieving result.

Despite the Blue Jays “losing” the trade with Colorado, getting rid of Reyes was a major reason as to why they took off in 2015. Yes, Price was a big addition. Jays played better when Reyes was hurt earlier that year. His D took a big step backward but his handshake celebrations improved mightily.

Reyes had talent. Lots of it. Such a waste.

Hey Mister Bill. Sluggish here. The Reyes realities are as follows:

-Have you heard of Mets management holding players in line the past few years?

-Gave you heard management provide forthright, timely information on players; or have they basically been covert in their communication?

I read something about Jose Reyes being a terrible one year deal this year on mlb.com
The funny thing is while I read the part about Jose Reyes it seemed that the person who wrote it wanted Reyes to retire.

If the Mets even consider for a moment bringing back Reyes, that will speak volumes for the true state of ownership and the front office. I’d be willing to bet that all the other 29 teams would pass on Reyes even if they were granted a 26th roster spot at a salary of zero. This guy no longer belongs in the major leagues.

HOWEVER logic will not prevail in Mets world.

Does Reyes want to play for a contract that Abbott and Costello view as a steal deal?

Maybe $2 million for 2019 as his agent flashes the back of Reyes’ 2009 baseball card. “Come on dad”, Jeff says. “We can’t go wrong at that price.” Mutt, a bit out of it says, “how much more can we steal from the fans if they believe he will bounce back?”

You are healthy and body feels good, but you are hitting .186 .257 .281 with a .538 OPS.
You are below average in defense. Actually a liability for some time.

What is the explanation other than you are finished as a baseball player?
Though your BAbip seems horrendous and could have contributed to your overall batting average somewhat, it will still be horrible with adjustment.

You really expect any team (major, minor, and independent) to give you any type of contract?

Think your agent will ask you to have dinner as soon as the season ends and explain to you that your career is over. Be grateful that the Mets haven’t pull the plug for some unexplained reason. It’s not like he sells tickets, but draws ire from fans for the complete incompetence from the ownership down.

Hey Shea. Even with their new digs, the Mets environment is the same. You know, “Sorry I’m screaming—but the plane noise is crazy. Why did they build another stadium in the landing path for Laguardia?”

“Do you mean Chiti Field? It’s a great place to watch a game with noise reduction earbuds in”.

Now as for your team here’s the bad news.

You Mets fans have been pathetic by continuing to support Abbott and Costello’s Dodgers memorabilia habit.

Slow to adopt a mets boycott, you are doing NOTHING to send Mutt and Jeff a message that says NO MORE.

So Reyes will be resigned. The geriatric trio will play together again (except for DL stints). Tebow will be a centerpiece
called up in a few weeks. He’s a starting outfielder in 2019. Conforto and Nemo will continue to have their chains yanked.

And the best part will be the DL roster. Expect more of the same. Cespedes will be an anchor. Thor will visit Avery month or two. Matz will go on the off month. Wheeler will visit so he can hang by Jones Beach as well.

Per MLB.com “Nix was one of several prospects who needed to be added to the 40-man roster by December or risk being taken in the Rule 5 Draft. The Padres figured they should get an early look at the right-hander.”

That would make more sense then to roster him now. Thought players got an extra year before needing protection from Rule 5 if signed at 19 or younger, but must be 18 or younger then.

you must be new here, the mets have been dissected up and down since april – not sure where you are getting where anybody ever thought that conforto and/or cespedes is in any way shape or form in the class of players you are talking about. I can assure you that no one ever has mistaken any met everyday player as a top 25 player……
this is a bottom 3 run team in baseball from ownership, management, business plan, coaching, instructing, scouting, prospects, major league ready players, minor league system, international scouting, age of team, defense, and on and on…………………………………………….
but back to the original thought – reyes should not be on this roster in august of a lost season, I mean this is just plain and simple baseball logic

If Reyes were a smart baseball player and winner, sure, bring him back.

He’s not. Let him find a deal elsewhere.

He was infuriating to watch in Toronto because you could see the talent. But, he made a lot of baserunning blunders, even got popped with obstruction bumping into a runner caught in a rundown, hurt himself using poor technique on a slide trying to steal second base….we could go on. Fact is, Jays turned their season around once they dealt him to Colorado for Tulo. Tulo didn’t play well yet was an improvement just from a defense and clubhouse standpoint.

PLEASE DON’T. But of course they will. The Wilpons are always up for signing “familiar” guys who’ll play for less $$. Whether or not they fit any kind of plan, whether or not they block guys who might and even whether they can play at all. The “new” GM will be a retread and the perfect guy to welcome Reyes back. Such a sad state of affairs.

Reyes is still on the team because of the Wilpons….I’m guessing Fred. Mickey Calloway was asked point blank about Reyes and he gave the company line and declined to name anyone in the front office, though it’s well known that the Wilpons are regulars in the locker room and often spend time with….Jose Reyes. The Mets will continue to suck until the Wilpons sell the team, which likely will not happen any time soon. Fred likely doesn’t have many years left, but he’s big on want Jeff to take over, which based on what has been attributed to his thus far…would make the Mets even worse.
