Yankees Sign Quintin Berry

By Jeff Todd | August 27, 2018 at 5:31pm CDT

The Yankees announced today that they have signed outfielder Quintin Berry to a minor-league deal. Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com had reported the news on Twitter.

Berry had spent the season in the minors in the Brewers organization before his recent release. In 98 plate appearances on the year, the 33-year-old carries a .216/.296/.318 slash. He was also successful on ten of eleven stolen-base attempts, however. Likewise, through over two thousand career plate appearances at the highest level of the minors, Berry is just a .241/.337/.309 hitter but has swiped 159 bags.

It’s something of an annual tradition for Berry to pop up on the radar at this time of year. He has been utilized as a late-season and even postseason bench piece, owing to his sterling reputation as a baserunner. It’s possible, then, that he’ll show up on the Yankees roster at some point once rosters expand, though the organization would have to open a 40-man spot to utilize him in the majors.

At first I thought it said Quintin Hogg, Baron Hailsham Of St. Marylebone.

I was like, that’s a name I haven’t seen Jeff Todd mention in a couple of weeks!

29 SB in 132 games. 21 in 94 games with Detroit. Never hurts to have guys who can fly.

And 5-for-5 career in post-season. He’s more useful on a roster than a lot of other players out there.

I picture him just sitting on his couch, watching some Netflix, his agent calls, he puts on some cleats, and hops on airplane. Every August.

He doesn’t put his cleats on in a phone booth and run to the park? Super-Q?

Could they just throw someone they won’t want for the playoffs onto the 60-day DL to clear up a 40-man spot? Or would the guy have to actually be injured?

I mean you can fake an injury but that’d be tough. Probably have to DFA someone instead.

Ells is already on the 60 day. If they want Berry eligible for the playoffs they will have to risk losing a player off the 40 man roster, although if they are convinced that Frazier won’t be back this year they could move him to the 60 day DL.

One of the players on the 40 man is Ryan Bollinger. He’s pitching to an ERA over 4 in double A, and was already DFAd once this year.

I don’t see him pitching in the majors this year, and there’s exactly 0% chance that he’s going to take up a precious roster spot for the Rule 5 draft.

Which means that spot is open. He’s just there as a seat filler.

Seems like Quintin Berry is just hung in a storage warehouse until September of every year when he is picked up on a first come first served basis.

As we look at the wild Quintin Berry he reappears after every 8 months doing … no one knows what speedy demon does during this time. Some people think he spends his time saving his bunch of money on car insurance by switching to geico. Others think he flips burger in small town called Lonerock, Oregon. He is a rare sight as we only get to see him little less than month.
