Giants Select Abiatal Avelino, Transfer Jeff Samardzija To 60-Day DL

By Jeff Todd | September 4, 2018 at 6:20pm CDT

6:20pm: The Giants announced that right-hander Jeff Samardzija is headed to the 60-day DL to open a roster spot for Avelino. The move doesn’t necessarily end Samardzija’s season, given how long he’s already spent on the disabled list, though there’s no immediate indication that he’s close to returning. Schulman tweets that doctors have “ruled out” surgery, but Samardzija is continuing to get additional opinions in an effort to find the cause of the ongoing inflammation in his shoulder and a better means of preventing it down the road.

12:45pm: The Giants are set to select the contract of infielder Abiatal Avelino, per Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter links). Also coming onto the active roster is outfielder Ryder Jones, who already held a 40-man spot, Schulman adds on Twitter.

Avelino, 23, was just acquired in the late-August deal that sent veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees. He would have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft this fall, which helps explain his inclusion in the trade and today’s promotion decision.

With the move, the Giants will get a brief look at Avelino in the majors while also providing some rest opportunities for veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford down the stretch. After turning in a strong performance to open the year at the Double-A level for the Yanks, Avelino has struggled at the highest level of the minors. Still, he is a reputedly promising defender in the middle infield who showed newfound pop in 2018.

Everyone is clearly going to comment on that, and nothing else should be relevant.

Showcasing to see if he would ve a viable platoon partner with Hanson. They’d be able to save almost 4 million letting Panik go.

I doubt the money would be as much of a motivation as getting a return of something on panik if they trade. 4mm doen’t matter a whole lot to the giants next year, it is just about getting under the tax this year.

The only problem is he has minimal to no trade value. He’s been inconsistent, and has known back issues. Considering they’ll need money for a starting pitcher and outfielder (Harper), they’ll need every penny they can get. If you include guaranteed contracts and projected arbitration players, theu are already at 166 million (including Panik) A premiere player and midrange pitcher will push them close to the luxury tax threshold.

His point is that going over the threshold next year doesn’t really matter to the Giants. All the penalties will reset after they go below this year and its not until you exceed the threshold for multiple seasons in a row does it start to really impact the payroll.

I know it’s Monopoly money but $4 million is $4 million, and for a player that seems to have peaked and is pretty much at replacement level. I like the guy but it doesn’t’ seem like he’s going to be the next Robby Thompson.

I’m no Doctor but I’m guessing that what is keeping Samardzija on the DL has less to do with his shoulder and more to do with his 6.25 era. Dude is a human fireworks show every time he toes the rubber. Another Giant waste of $, pun intended…

I think the Giants’ front office is past trying to contend, and so the logical path would be to hope for a long losing streak to improve draft position. But if Samardzija was currently able to pitch, he would get starts in the interest of losing.
