Diamondbacks Acquire Robby Scott

By Connor Byrne | December 30, 2018 at 4:36pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have acquired left-hander Robby Scott from the Reds for cash, according to an announcement from Cincinnati. The Reds designated Scott for assignment on Dec. 21, ending a brief run with the club that began when it claimed him off waivers from the Red Sox on Dec. 10.

The 29-year-old Scott racked up a solid chunk of innings in Boston in 2017, when he totaled 35 2/3 frames and put up a respectable 3.79 ERA with 7.82 K/9, 3.28 BB/9 and a 42.6 percent groundball rate. Scott only managed a 5.32 FIP that year, though, and was barely a factor last season for the Red Sox’s World Series-winning team, with whom he threw a mere 6 2/3 innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and five walks (with eight strikeouts).

While Scott hasn’t been that successful in the majors, he has recorded a 3.21 ERA with 9.1 K/9 against 2.7 BB/9 in 165 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level. Now a member of the Arizona organization, Scott will reunite with general manager Mike Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo, who are both familiar with the hurler from their days with the Boston franchise.

I’m from Boston n he wasn’t that bad. He had some good outings. He’s still in a good age group, it could be Boston was too much for him. I wish him well, I hope he has success.

Agree. He’s 1 of those can get a lefty out, but is awful vs righties crowd that are all around the minors and only throws 90-92mph.

Last year he did better vs righties, also at Pawtucket, but wouldn’t count on it lasting.

Well it’s not a rumor but an actual transaction. And now back to Sonny Gray, this year’s Blake Swihart.

Reds trade Tanner Rainey for Tanner Roark. Robby Scott should have gotten them Robby Ray.

I’m not sure why teams seem to be so low on him. He’s been spectacular at the AAA level over the past 3 years and was quite solid in 2017 at the ML level. At the very least he should serve as a valuable LOOGY but honestly I think he could be even more. I’m a Red Sox fan and given the struggles of the bullpen at certain times throughout the season I didn’t really understand why he wasn’t given a bigger chance to show what he could do – especially given his pretty successful 2017 season and his “dominance” (stats wise anyway) at the AAA in 2018. Anyway – I hope he gets a chance to prove himself this season and wish him the best, always seemed like a good guy/teammate when he was on the Sox and I’d like to see him carve out more of a consistent role in the Majors

What’s new? Everyone wants the champs leftovers, lol. Bar none best MLB team of the 21st Century, the distinction is now loud and clear. As teams across the sport beg for personnel from the Bay State, this lame BS will be more commonplace than ever before. Clearly Scott wasn’t worth keeping in the eyes of the FO or the BoSox would have kept him in a BP going through turnover right now. Guess he was officially “that bad” at this point….. too bad. Thought he was quite solid for at least a season at the MLB level with the Sawx. Best of luck to him and enjoy the slick WS RING!!!!
