Yankees To Sign Danny Farquhar

By Jeff Todd | January 21, 2019 at 5:56pm CDT

The Yankees have agreed to a minor-league deal with right-hander Danny Farquhar, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred (via Twitter). He’ll receive an invitation to MLB camp, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand adds on Twitter.

It’s yet another bit of good news for Farquhar, who has been firmly on the upswing since a terrifying medical episode last year. He has made a remarkable recovery from a ruptured brain aneurysm — incurred in the White Sox’ dugout after an appearance in late April — and received clearance in late November to begin working back toward the mound.

Soon to turn 32, Farquhar will assuredly not enter Spring Training as a favorite to crack a loaded Yankees pen. But he could represent an interesting depth option if he’s able to pick up where he left off. Though he has not been terribly effective in recent years, Farquhar was at times a high-quality reliever for the Mariners and Rays and carries a lifetime 12.3% swinging-strike rate in the majors.

LOL. Where do the Yankees have these roster spots? I realize Gray is gone but it seems like they turned 50% of the roster over.

He’s certainly not a favorite to make the team but it’s not impossible. The Yankees carry 7-8 relievers. The top 6 are locks, but the rest are open based on need and performance

        Chapman
        Britton
        Ottavino
        Betances
        Green
        Holder
        ?
        ?

They may choose to keep guys like German, Adams, Loasiga and Cessa stretched out to be ready to start, so they could end up in Scranton, while a guy like Danny Farquhar, a true reliever, could make the team.

Yeah… I think Tarpley has a stronger chance, but if he has a bad spring, anything can happen. Even though the Yankee bullpen is stacked, Boone rarely uses the top guys in games they are behind in…so the 7-8th relievers still see some action. Unless they resign Adam Warren, of course.

Kahnle and Tarpley are basically his biggest competition, yes. But nothing will be handed to any of them in spring training. They’ll take the one who looks like he can help the team most.

I cant wait for Kahnle. I think he’ll rebound; Kahnle was stud for Yanks in 2017 playoffs; but lost in 2018. I still believe in Kahnle!

Sometimes minor league options factor in too. Teams are thinking depth – especially early in the season.

          @Stratocaster,

          But team-control matters more.

          Teams are thinking long-term.

Kahnle may be out of minor league options, but…. being sent down in lost 2018 season pushed his FA clock to 2021, instead of 2020.

Who cares about minor league options when you control player rights via arbitration?

As of right now it’s Kahnle and Cessa unless a trade, injury or DFA happens since they are both out of options.

One of the 2 spots has to go to long reliever. So only 1 spot remaining and I like Tarpley for that.

        Its not about that.

He has virtually no chance of making the roster unless a glut of injuries happen.

His agent is friendly with Cashman so they are letting him come to camp, get a little exposure in the Hope’s he gets a major league deal with someone else.

        It happens all the time.

Agents just don’t have great players, and its good business to help out their lower profile clients.

How do you explain that to your boss (or wife for that matter)? Oh I was just on my phone because the Yankees signed a pitcher to a MILB deal and I was waiting for some random dude to comment on it so I could pick him apart. I’ll get back to work in just a sec.

Rooting for different teams doesn’t prove anything wrt to two commenters not being the same person. Some, like Pads Fans and outinleftfield, use it as a cover-up.

That all being said, xabial sounds nothing like west coast ryan and cubsfan you are one to talk about “provoking everyone.”

Obviously everyone wishes him well (at least I hope so), but I admit I’m confused; as a Free Agent, he could have gone anywhere. The Yanks seems to represent the LEAST possible place for a reliever. Most of these AAAA guys (and Farquhar’s pretty much that) look for opportunity first; chances are pretty good that if I’m an OFer, I have little interest in Pawtucket, Boston’s AAA team. Even if I do well there, it’s likely I’m going to stay there.

Just about every other bullpen offers more opportunity than the Yanks.

You’re an idiot if you think he’s a AAAA pitcher. Literally look at his numbers with the mariners and Rays. Not amazing but definitely well above average. Someone is very ill informed or just doesn’t take the time to look at a guy’s stats.
