White Sox GM Rick Hahn addressed the situation of pending free agent first baseman Jose Abreu, as Scott Merkin of MLB.com tweets. It seems the organization may not be optimistic of reaching a deal to keep Abreu from the open market. “Never say never,” says Hahn, “but we prefer to handle our business in the offseason.” Perhaps there’s still some room for talks in camp, but that comment certainly did not strike a tone that suggests it’s seen as a particularly likely outcome.
- Key White Sox youngster Yoan Moncada, meanwhile, appears to be slated to move to third base, as Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Had the team landed a certain prominent free agent target, those plans might have changed, but it now seems reasonably likely that the club will work with its existing infield mix. Yolmer Sanchez is seemingly slated to shift back to second base, with Tim Anderson staying at shortstop. Moncada says he’s happy to move to the hot corner. “I like that position, and with more repetitions I will feel even better,” he said. “I’m just here to help the team in whatever capacity they give me.”
- With an outfield mix that hardly inspires much confidence, the Indians could certainly stand to receive a comeback effort from former top prospect Bradley Zimmer. As Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports, the 26-year-old appears to be making solid progress in his efforts to return from shoulder surgery. Right now, he’s just starting to take cuts in the cage, so there’s still a ways to go. When last we checked in, Zimmer indicated he was hopeful of landing on the earlier side of the eight-to-twelve-month recovery timeframe he was originally given when he went under the knife last July. If he stays on an upward trajectory, perhaps a reasonably early-season return is possible. Of course, Zimmer will be looking not only to come back from the injury but also a less-than-productive start to his MLB career at the plate.
- The Tigers intend to focus on getting Kaleb Cowart up to speed as a pitcher, skipper Ron Gardenhire told reporters including Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. That would appear to mean a reduction in his infield reps, though as McCosky tweeted today, Cowart was taking part in drills this morning. However things shake out in camp, Gardenhire says, pitching is the “main reason we brought [Cowart] in.” It’s a bit difficult to imagine Cowart cracking the Opening Day roster as a hurler — as the article explains, unsurprisingly, there’s plenty of rust — but he could still emerge as an option if he’s able to find a groove.

White Sox are an embarrassment
trendysayings
oof, shots fired
whitesoxfan424
Sadly, very sadly, I can’t disagree.
TrueOutcomeFan
Seems very Bullsesque. The future is so bright, but the FO just seems to be doing it one handed on purpose for no reason whatsoever.
xXabial
no, it’s smart baseball. Jose did have an off year but he’s now on the other side of 30 and showing signs of regression. I would not extend him unless the price is for future potential not oast performance.
Codeeg
The word regression does not mean becoming worse.
mcmillankmm
I would have traded him already
GoSoxGo
My guess is that you’re right. Manny’s addition to the team won’t mean much unless the Padres’ hyped farm system produces players who perform up to expectations. If they don’t, Manny’s value will be greater to another team who will trade for him with—what else?—prospects!
ChiSoxCity
You’ll get no argument from me about the White Sox… embarrassing, frustrating, even nauseating and stupid are words that cone to mind. They are the Bulls of the MLB. And, as with the Bulls, what few fans the Sox have left should just stay away until a change of ownership takes place.
kroeg49
Why do my posts post twice. Anyone know how to fix this?
pullhitter445
Kroeg49 it’s something with the mobile app posts, been going on for a long time. The site will only officially post once. if you back out of the app and reopen.

JR needs to sell this club. He’s making millions and must think he can take it with him! Disappointed, disappointed and disgusted.
User 163535993
The amount of crying around here that was gong on when Machado signed with the Padres was embarrassing. TV, Radio, you’d have thought Machado went into Reinsdorfs bedroom and held a pillow over his head. The Padres will end up trading that contract anyway, When it doesn’t work out like they hope. Yankees or Dodgers will end up with him I’m sure.
jdgoat
I know. Whether he signed in San Diego, Philly, or Chicago, he was always going to be in a position to win in the near future. Chicago and San Diego are almost identical situations, so picking one over the other is not a reason to get upset over him. Blame the FO or ownership, not Machado.
rice
That’s a huge blow for the White Sox not getting Machado with all the hard work they put in. Oh well I guess we gotta extend the window of contending beyond 2020
SayfromMaclay
You don’t even have a window of contention, how do you extend that which you do not have?
ChiSoxCity
Considering the poor state of the AL Central, and the talent in their farm system, the White Sox MIGHT have been in a position to contend as early as 2020, had they signed Machado. As things stand now, they may never be a contender because the White Sox can’t sign any noteworthy free agents. It’s nearly impossible to win without adding big league talent to a roster at some point.
Polish Hammer
How soon until Chicago dumps Yonder Alonso? LOL!!!
layventsky
Not long. I’m pretty sure he’s a free agent after this season.
Polish Hammer
But yet we kept hearing how brilliant they were for getting Alonso because Machado would be right behind him…LOL!!!
ChiSoxCity
He and Jay will probably be traded before spring training next season. Man, what a farce.
pplama
It’s such a White Sox move to switch their previous “franchise cornerstone” to another position for a kid who OPS’d .700 in A ball and is at least 2 years away.
Terrible decisions and even worse PR, from a terrible franchise.
Polish Hammer
At least the Sox try to better themselves, the Marlins are just a AAAA operation.
lefty58
Yet the Marlins have more world series wins in the last 15 years than the White Sox do in the last 100. Sometimes trying is just not enough.
Polish Hammer
Really? Here I thought each won 1 in the last 15 years….hmmmmm….
And the Marlins go all out get lucky and win, then blow it all up….go all out get lucky and win, then blow it all up….go all out spending to sway a new stadium, then blow it all up…
Polish Hammer
On second thought the Sox won 1 title in the last 15 years and the Marlins NONE….
ChiSoxCity
It’s ok lefty, math is hard.
scurvyrickets
White Sox – 1 WS
Marlins – 1WS (16 years ago actually)
So…what? Please try again.
bencole
Marlins actually won in ’97 as well
Polish Hammer
Obviously, but his miscalculated dig implied they won twice in the past 15 years, but it was 16 and 22 years ago for the fish.
Polish Hammer
Can we just call him notrighty58 instead?
Priggs89
He OPS’d .756 in A ball and .702 in High-A. You should probably also look at his larger body of work instead of just ~150 AB’s last year, and you’ll see that he’s an advanced college bat that’ll move quickly if he can stay healthy (admittedly a HUGE if with Sox prospects these days). He’ll likely be up by the end of next year.
That being said, I’d rather have Moncada stick at second and focus solely on his approach at the plate until Madrigal actually forces the issue; I just think you’re SEVERELY over exaggerating the issue here.
pplama
It’s another example of a bad decision by a franchise that has been littered with them for nearly a decade. It’s turning into an annual ritual of tellingn us which prospect we should be excited about in 2 years or so. Development failures abound.
pullhitter445
I think a better argument would be why move him when 2b prospect is at least a year away, while potentially having an opportunity to be “rumored” to pursue Arenado if he were to hit free agency in 2020. White Sox won’t sign him, I believe the Rockies won’t let him go. Moncada looks really bad. The sale trade in general has looked awful to this point.
mike127
Amen, Priggs……and once he adjusts to A ball, he’ll take the jump to AA or AAA and there’s the possibility of a learning curve, there too. 100% agree—looking at a small sample size is always dangerous and give the kid time to force the issue. He’s proven his talent throughout his playing days.
pplama
I’m not saying the kid will flop. I’m saying the Sox are dumb for annointing him the future 2B and moving Moncada so soon.
Goalposts
jbigz12
The longer Moncada plays a position the better he would be there. I don’t think Moncada loses any value as a 3B. Maybe he picks a little up if he’s good there. Regardless it’s better to get Moncada’s transition started now when you aren’t contending vs sticking him there when you are trying to. Even if Madrigal flames out it makes sense to make the move early. Moncada could be terrible at 3rd and then the whole idea has to be reworked. Who knows.
ChiSoxCity
Waste of time to keep Moncada at 2nd. They have Anderson and Madrigal as the middle infield of the future. Moncada is their only longterm option at 3rd. They need to find out if he can handle it right now.
Chicks Dig the Longball
You aren’t wrong pplama. I don’t understand the move either. Moncada loses value by moving to 3rd and I don’t think Madrigal will ever slug over .400. No reason to give him 2nd yet. I wouldn’t be shocked if Moncada is playing 2nd base by next season.
batty
If i’m Abreu, i’m hoping the Sox offer an extension. We’ve seen the lack of interest in his skill set the last few years and i don’t think free agency will be kind to him. Especially since he’ll be 33 heading into the 2020 season.
Polish Hammer
Whatever he gets will certainly be better than the $40/month he used to get…

Looks like some Cub fans posting here today.
I see Cubs are predicted for last
place this season despite that ridiculous payroll with bad contracts.
Their owner’s father appears to have written questionable emails.
Plus Cubs have no more money to spend on payroll.
So good luck with all of that!

Chisox_fan
Why take a swing at the Cubs because the Sox swung and missed on Manny? Overall, it’s probably a good thing they didn’t sign him to a ten year deal, given that Sox fans seldom fill the seats.
pullhitter445
Bulls fan should stop showing up also. Jerry is just stealing from the Chicago sports fans
mike127
And some projections have the Cubs first and the Brewers last. Big deal. PECOTA has been wrong on the Cubs the last four years…but, you know, every once in a while the blind squirrel finds the nut. Ps—nothing about any of the posts above lead anyone to believe that they are by Cub fans. The story is about the Sox, not the Cubs—don’t turn it that way any further than you have. You even troll the Cubs when the story is about the Sox.
whyhayzee
As long as it can smell, the squirrel will find the nut. Eyes have less to do with it. This is a comical site. Lots of squirrels and nuts.
05whitesox
I feel bad for Cub fans. Soon Eloy and Cease will be superstars and they will just have to deal with it as they trend downward because the almighty Theo traded them for a 3rd starter at best, signed a defense first outfielder, a world series choke artist pitcher, and a walk machine for what, 400 mil total?
bencole
Hah. Cubs fan here. 95 wins last year and 4 straight playoff appearances. Your best knock on us is something that hasn’t happened and probably won’t. Certainly not grounds until it does.
I’m vehemently against what the father said, but it was the father, not the Cubs. Cubs aren’t to blame for that.
Pecota’s model put the Cubs in last. Fangraphs put them in first. All the models have about 8 wins between the first and last place team in the NL Central, so naturally the order varies some depending on the model.
It makes me a proud Cubs fan that you have to make fun of someone’s preseason standings projection rather than our results to talk s***
Solar Flare
Does Pecota really think that the Reds and Pirates are better than the Cubs?
kroeg49
The Cubs tiebreaker game was not the playoffs.
bencole
The wild card game was.
pullhitter445
Computer projections are by no means accurate. Poking fun at theos poor history with signing free agents even dating back to Boston now happening again in Chicago. Not being able to pursue Harper or machado do to darvish and heyward contracts has to sting. Having addy Russell, joe ricketts, are just a few pieces of bad publicity. Not trading schwarber when he was actually worth something. That bullpen the cubs have though……
jdgoat
You’re actually taking predictions that have them coming last serious?

Why take a swing at the Cubs because the Sox swung and missed on Manny? Overall, it’s probably a good thing they didn’t sign him to a ten year deal, given that Sox fans seldom fill the seats regardless of the merits of the team. Sox have good times on the horizon and Manny will be an afterthought. Manny would have been a great addition, but he had little impact with the Dodger’s pennant hopes and results may be the same with the Padres.
whitesoxfan424
Please comment on the post’s topics, and not bash a team that’s not even mentioned.
mike127
Thank you, 424. Found it odd that one with a Sox moniker would swing at the Cubs on a Sox story. Appreciate it.
petrie000
What you see and what’s true have always had a tenuous relationship when it involves the Cubs, so I’m not all that worried….
Vizionaire
hope kaleb succeeds as a pitcher.
KCJ
Yeah, I hope he does too. But man, how bad are things in Detroit? This is a sad commentary on the state of the pitching in their system….the main reason they’re bringing an infielder to camp is because they’re hopeful he’ll make it as a pitcher? Maybe they can bring back Joel Zumaya to play SS and bat cleanup
minoso9
I’m hoping the Sox keep Abreu-possibly a one year deal after this season. The guy can still hit (.295 career BA) plus his mentorship and advice will help our young prospects on the way up from the minors. Jose is a great team player.
cwsOverhaul
Like Hahn and the vision, but as GM he needed to do a better job managing expectations for the fanbase with Machado, especially knowing what JR’s guarantee $ limit was. Personally hoped they would max out at 250 as they did or let him go elsewhere, but the way they gushed and obsessed over MM reflected an organization who should have met the 300 asking price. Believe the miss will be a blessing, but just a philosophy that no single player worth 30+ AAV long-term unless that team’s ownership has either deep pockets to outspend mistakes (NYY, RSox, LAD, Cubs) or the true will to have a sustained high team payroll to be near or above luxury tax (not their M.O.). Their route has to be a lot of prospects panning out and several 10-20mil AAV solid but not eye popping acquisitions next offseason & beyond.
baseballhobo
Eloy Jimenez will arrive soon and save the world.
KCJ
Can’t wait for Eloy!
xXabial
I’m glad the Sox traded Yoan…he may produce respectable offensive numbers but strikeouts has always been an issue for him.
GeoKaplan
I’m hoping things work out for Cowart, as I wanted the Angels to take the bat out of his hand and work him into the bullpen. He has very good defensive chops, but several trips through the Majors said his bat is AAA.
bravesfan
You get the feeling Moncada is gonna be a bust. He was a cant miss once in a lifetime type prospect. Huge money, posted solid minor league #’s. Yet nothing thus far. I have a bold prediction. Had he not been traded, I’d bank he would be killing it with the Sox. I think culture has a big say on a player like this. Play with a losing team, play like a losing player. Play on a winning team, play like a winner. Idk, just a hypothesis. Swanson is like that for the braves in my opinion. Brought him up too early around a bunch of guys who were expected to lose. Now he’s fighting to get out of that slump that was created. Again, just a hypothesis… talking to talk, wasting peoples time
pullhitter445
I like the Swanson example makes sense and has some truth to it
stevep-4
Hey it was just one season. Let’s wait and see, he is still very young. Look at how much e.g. Javy Baez improved his batting eye in one year, I think Moncada can do the same if he is disciplined.
Polish Hammer
Baez has much better protection in his lineup. With the Chisox being what they are they can just afford to throw garbage at Monday’s and make him swing.
