Giants Sign Cameron Maybin

By Ty Bradley | February 22, 2019 at 9:30pm CDT

FEBRUARY 22: via TwitterThe deal would pay Maybin $1.75MM in the majors and has $250K in plate appearance-based incentives, per Baggarly ().

FEBRUARY 17: Maybin has joined the Giants, Maria Guardado of MLB.com tweets.

FEBRUARY 16: Per Andrew Baggarly and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Giants are “finalizing” an agreement to bring outfielder Cameron Maybin to Spring camp as a non-roster invitee.

Maybin, 32 in April, has spent time with four teams over the last two seasons, dropping an identical 88 wRC+ in each. Mired for the last three seasons in fourth-outfielder limbo, the former first-rounder has seen his once-vaunted center-field defense decline sharply with age. In nearly 2,800 innings at the position since the beginning of 2015, the longtime MLB vet has posted -26 DRS, though his numbers did normalize a bit in the last two seasons.

Rushed to the big leagues at the ripe age of 20, Maybin was quickly shipped in the Miguel Cabrera trade to Miami, where he never quite found his footing at the plate. A cross-country swap to San Diego offered respite, and Maybin’s 105 wRC+, 4.3 fWAR 2011 season precipitated a 5 year, $25MM extension for the young outfielder. Tough times followed, though, and the Friars cut their losses just three seasons in.

The then-29-year-old looked to turn a corner in 2016, when he slashed .315/.383/.418 for Detroit in part-time play, though his BABIP (.383) was hardly congruent with his hard-hit rate (24.7%), and he again faced regression the next season. All told, Maybin has slashed a respectable .254/.322/.368 (92 wRC+) in 3,848 lifetime MLB plate appearances, which mirrors closely his Steamer projection (92 wRC+) for the upcoming season.

The Giants would figure to have a place for Maybin in center, as the weak side of a Steven Duggar platoon, but the up-for-grabs outfield, the sloppiest projected crop in years by the bay, could align with him in a full-time role at either corner. Either way, he’ll jostle with a veritable grab-bag of candidates, including Gerardo Parra, Mac Williamson, Austin Slater, Chris Shaw, John Andreoli, Cesar Puello, Mike Gerber, Craig Gentry, Drew Ferguson, and Anthony Garcia, for any number of roles. ZiPS, interestingly, projects Ferguson, the Rule-5 selection, and Garcia, the longtime Cardinal farmhand, to post the highest WAR totals of any Giants outfielders in the upcoming season.

Well, theoretically they could find a way of fitting him in and they could by making Gardner a 4th outfielder, because Hicks and Judge are certainly not losing their jobs as starting outfielders. I don’t think Harper will be a Yankee, though.

You obviously do not follow williamson. He changed his swing two winters ago, smashed in spring trainingbut went down because the swing change was still new. He crushed triple to the tune of somewhere around 8 hrs and a sub 500 batting average until he was called up in may. He dominated and hit balls in places oppo that only Bonds reached until getting the concussion. He suffered the effects until september and has been working with his swing coach, the same guy who ressurected justin turner, all this winter. I expect him to be in the lineup and not leave for a long time. So now explain why he sucks. Because he is 28?

Maybin, Gentry, Solarte, Parra, Vogt, Rivera, Rupp, Beachy, all minor league signings. Wonder who makes the team?

Pomeranz, Holland, Venditte. Major league deals

Trevor Gott, Jose Lopez, John Andreoli, Mike Gerber, Keyvius Sampson, Donovan Solano, Jamie Callahan signed to help out on the farm.

Trades netted Jake Barrett and Breyvic Valera.

Not the sexiest moves, but good rebuilding moves IMO.

Rebuilding? They have 7 guys making at least $12m and a couple at $20+ so these moves are not to rebuild. They are to try to find cheap solutions. They should be going all in in FA not these “depth” moves.

I agree with this testament, but if not Solarte who else on the FA market could be a utility INF? Marwin Gonzalez wants 60M, which is clearly an overpay. Harper wants 300M, which may not be an overpay, but can handcuff the organization financially. Id say the only disappointment is that we haven’t found a way to unload some contracts by packaging them with ML talent (Will Smith packaged with Mark Melancon, for example) but that type of trade is hard to pull off when a guy like Melancon is coming off terrible years.

Baseball1600, here is what I find wrong with your comment, Melancon, while not the closer he is getting paid big money to be, is definitely not the worst contract on the books, and probably with a good 1st half could be moved without adding on someone else if the Giants are out of contention at the end of July.
The 2nd thing I have a problem with is on a similar notion, the Giants traded their best remaining pitching prospect last year so they could “dump salary”, it would be a terrible waste to do that again, especially if Smith pitches the way he did last season.

Sucks for Williamson and Duggar. They were like “okay this will be our year to be full time in the majors. Nothing holding us back and no one to fill the void. WE’RE GOLDEN!” (Along comes Zaidi) “Hey lets invite all the outfielders in the MLB to spring training!” Lol. I kinda like what he’s doing with the team though. Rather than just waiting around for prospects to bloom he’s taking action. Which is far better than the past regime for the last couple years.

But it’s true? They were 5 games behind the Dodgers in August. Isn’t that “in it”? The Dodgers and Rockies went on large win streaks, so SF traded McCutchen and Posey opted to have surgery instead of playing the rest of the season with the hip strain. After that, they lost 12 straight games, and in total only won 5 games in September which went them from a team barely above .500 to a team that was 8 games under .500 and 4th in the division.

Quite honestly you could claim that this was just a leverage move or the Giants could have some balls and actually jump ahead of the Phillies and sign this guy. He’s 26 years old and a superstar and it’s a rare situation where you’ll be getting production from him out of the 10 years that you signed him.

The lack of suitors for the two “superstars” this offseason should be telling. Nobody is jumping ahead to overpay for a guy who’s posted a sub 2 WAR in nearly half of his seasons in the majors ? Shocking …

Zaidi probably has to get Larry Baer’s permission on every personnel move. Larry’s primary concern is filling the ball park in 2019. He thinks, and probably correctly, that people will stay away if the Giants signal a “rebuild”. Therefore, Giants have to ride out the Cueto, Samardwhatever, Molasses, Longo, Bum, Belt, etc. contracts and lose 90+ games every year…

The new GM didn’t trade for washed up players. They are stuck with multiple bad contracts and no trade clauses. They are not presently tanking. They’re trying to create competition in the OF and have these NRI to step up and prove their worth. If they’re out at the trade deadline then they’ll trade off the guys who can be traded.

It’s weird everyone is believing a reporter who said the Giants only offered a short term deal. They offered at least 7 years. That’s short term? That reporter doesn’t know. Other guy “who knows” says it’s the Giants. The “latest” report is an hour after the other “latest” report but the decision was made yesterday? Makes no sense.

The last one is “a deal is gaining momentum with philly.” I agree with you in that their offer wasn’t THAT short. I do think someone is leaking info to try to get the giants to push a little bit harder because that’s where he wants to go. The giants have always been really quiet when dealing with players too so it could seem like it’ll come out of nowhere. Hell… no one would have known that they met with Harper in the first place if it wasn’t for that fan who ran into Larry Baer.

No wonder the sports analysts and fans are scratching their heads about the direction the Giants are going. “Rebuild or stay afloat.” None of the outfield options … including latest signings … will strike fear in opposing teams … no legitimate star. Just a mish-mash of outfielders who are not everyday starters.

I agree. Why even bother signing all these dumpster players. It’s like the front office asked to lie to themselves just to feel better about the products they putting on the field. I don’t expect winning every year, but at least rebuild and retool so that we can move forward instead of sitting in this stupid idol position for several years. Essentially if we would’ve just begin rebuilding a couple of years ago, we were still going to the same growing pains two years in a row now but now we have no progress.

They can’t go rebuild because they have too many immovable big money contracts. Once the season starts, let’s see how hings go. At the trade deadline, if the Giants are not contending AND IF Bum, Smith, Watson, Panik, and maybe Holland or Pomeranz are doing well, then you’ll see it turn towards rebuild because they will be gone. Can’t trade Crawford, Posey, Shark, Longoria, etc because of the enormous contracts or no trade clauses. If one of these guys is having a monster year and waives no trade or another team is willing to pay the obscene contract, maybe they can move one of them as well. If they are doing well then we shall see what Zaidi does to add on

No. The team maybe bad but making it worse will help? Posey and Bum haven’t done anything wrong and want to remain Giants. They have done more already in their careers than most all stars dream of. What else do they have to accomplish? Another thing other teams fans don’t seem to grasp. “Giants are terrible blah blah blah”. No other team has won 3 in 5 since the Yankees. Only their fans know what it’s like to win that many in such a short amount of time, since I’ve been alive. Being a Giants fan and losing 90 games is still better than being a fan of any other team. So it’s all good.

Posey has a full no trade clause. He’s not leaving. So does mark melancon. Brandon belt has an annual 10 team list he can block. Crawford has a full no trade. Samardzija has an 8 team block with most likely little current trade value. That’s not even every player with a large restrictive contract. Zaidi inherited a tough situation and an organization lacking depth almost everywhere. It’s not as easy as most of you say it would be. That also is why your not a baseball executive I guess

All these signings are all upside no downside unlike the past few years of bad signings. These are prove it deals with these free agents. I believe Williamson and Duggar will lock down 2 of the 3 spots barring injury or atrocious springs. At any rate, bringing in all these guys with MLB experience will push the younger guys and 1 or 2 of these guys are bound to stick and have a great year. Give Zaidi a break until we have some real games to gauge things. I’m sure he has tried to unload some bad contracts but you’re going to have to take a bad contract back or give up young talent which the Giants do not have much of. They can’t force Harper to sign with them. At the end of the day, The Giants have won 3 WS titles in the past 9 seasons, nobody else can say that. They are trying to rebuild and be competitive, that is all you can ask for. Throwing $350M at Harper does not make much sense to me. Let the remaining bad contracts play out, draft well, restock and make wise moves when they are available and they’ll be fine. If the core guys would just do their jobs and stay healthy, this team will be better than .500. Nobody has to have a career year, just do your job. They are adding depth and when you look at the big picture, this is not a bad club. Yes, I enjoy the kool aid and I’ll keep drinking it. Go Giants!!! .

Who you going to trade these guys to? That is the problem, the contracts are obscene with the exception of Panik and 2B is not a high demand position at the moment. Most MLB teams are set at 2B. You would have to eat a lot of each of these contracts or take a bad contract in return. Melancon will be fine this year. He is finally 100% recovered from the pronator issue. I expect him to do well.

They are all difficult you have to consider their contracts. If they don’t want to leave they will block contending teams looking for talent. Belt absolutely has value but he has control over his situation. So does melancon. So does samardzjia. Panik had a rough season but still has great defense. I’m sure they have guaged interest but maybe it’s not worth it. Be patient and hope for the best because this most likely is it right now. Hopefully the team can stay healthier. That alone was a huge factor in their run

When it happens consistently over 2-3 years, that’s not being unlucky anymore, that’s being fundamentally flawed in some way.

In this case that flaw is being completely dependent on aging and expensive players to somehow defy the laws of nature and not break down…

Then my parents divorced and my mom moved to valley and I have hated it ever since lol. I split time between the bay and the valley and was always happier in the bay going to see the Giants, Sharks and Warriors. Plus, we always went to the Bay Bridge series before the season started. My father died 5 years ago and I have been to only a series per year. I miss my dad, but I have a lot of memories due to him working as a grounds keeper and meeting Giants legends and my favorite is still Lon Simmons and Peter Magowan. Win or lose, I am a Giants fan and will return to the bay area to retire.

Personally I wish they had signed Harper because the team that does so will regret it very soon and I’ve been saying that all along. I think the whole meeting with Harper was designed to appease the Bay Area fanbase and fool them into thinking they had big plans. I think the same thing is going on with the Padres and Machado but I also think that the team who signs Machado will regret it very soon as well and neither of those teams would be competitors with either of those guys.

The players on the Giants are fortunate their contracts are guaranteed. If they had NFL contracts, they’d all be cut.

Sounds like Harper is signing with Philadelphia. Giants fans are going to have a long, long season to endure. A team full of often injured, non producing players that all have full no trade clauses.

I realize as you get older, injures are more likely but, they’ve had a bunch of crazy injuries over the past couple of years and hopefully they can stay healthy this year. Longoria should be a little better, more familiarity with NL and hopefully he’s a bit more patient at the plate. Panik is solid when he’s healthy. If he plays 145 games, he’ll be .280 or better. Belt will be between 15-20 HRs, craw will be around .250 with 10 or so jacks, Posey should be back around .300 and at 14-22 HR’s. It would be nice if Williamson can stay healthy and produce +20 HR’s. Duggar and whoever they platoon with him should be fine offensively and defensively they’ll be a + in CF. Need at least 1 other guy out of this bunch of NRI to step up and go big at a corner OF position. Panda, Hanson, Solarte and whomever else they keep should be decent contributors during the year. The pitching staff will be anchored by that strong bullpen and the starters could be good too. A lot of options vying for that 5th starter. I think things will be better this year IF they stay healthy!

If things break well for the Giants I could see them eking out a Wild Card, with the strength in the East and Central. But were they in the NL Central I would pick them for last. If they could land Keuchel they might contend. My guess is Parra becomes a starter, better option than the others and it gives them a left-handed bat in the outfield. Granted they have 3 starters on the infield that swing from that side but a fourth wouldn’t hurt.. Hard to see Harper choosing SF on a short term deal, he would be a good get for the Gmen, but they would still need help. Keuchel and Harper might do it, but boy would they eclipse the cap by plenty.

Well, there goes Harper’s chance to sign a contract with the Giants. No way he can beat Maybin out of any playing time!

Tigers had Maybin in 2016, he played super. He was injured at the start of the season. When he returned he really sparked the team, it was like the whole team woke up.

Makes sense. Maybin hasn’t worn a Giants uniform yet.
Boras letting Phillies bid against themselves until contract reaches 11/350.
