Per Dan Hayes of the Athletic, the Giants have acquired OF Michael Reed from Minnesota for OF John Andreoli and cash. Per Kerry Crowley of the Mercury News, lefty Steven Okert was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man.
Reed, 26, was in camp with the Twins after an outstanding AAA performance in the Atlanta system last year. A career .269/.382/.395 hitter in the minors, Reed took it up a notch last season, slashing a ridiculous .363/.459/.539 in 229 plate appearances for AAA-Gwinnett. Scouts were never too bullish on the longtime Brewer – his highest ever rank in the Milwaukee system per Baseball America was 14th, following the 2014 season – but the recent performance has been too enticing to ignore.
Incredibly, Reed may slot in as the San Francisco’s top projected outfielder for the upcoming season – Steamer, at least, seems to agree. The Giants may not, but the righty-swinging Reed should see plenty of time at each outfield position in ’19, which he may well begin by serving as the weak-side platoon option in center field for lefty Steven Duggar.
Andreoli, 28, was brought in with a host of others to compete for a spot in the wide-open SF outfield, though his minor-league track record doesn’t glow nearly as brightly as Reed’s. The righty did put up an impressive .397 OBP at the AAA level last season, albeit in the much more hitter-friendly confines of the Pacific Coast League.
Okert, 27, has been decent in limited action for the Giants over the last three seasons, and had a banner (3.30 FIP, 12.22 K/9 vs. 2.27 BB/9) AAA season in 2018. Righties have always given the southpaw trouble, but he should have no issue latching on with a new franchise in the coming days.

I saw LaVelle Neal post about it first, but that’s a minor detail. I do like this trade on the surface for Minnesota
Paul Griggs
There didn’t seem to be any room for Reed and The only upside for the Twins seems to be that they didn’t try to force a spot for him. Andreoli is a poor replacement for Reed.
DarkSide830
nice depth piece for SF.
CoryM
Seems like a decent trade on the surface for Minnesota
pustule bosey
man the giants have been active
Pickle_Britches
@wolfchan…Yes they have

Gotta dig through lots of dumpsters before you find a half eaten pizza.

The giants acquired their best projected OF for John Andreoli. Idk whether to be impressed or extremely disappointed.
Frisco500
Remains to be seen. Looks pretty nice.

Outfield is ludicrously weak. Awful. But Duggar seems like a solid player and this is from a Dodgers fan.
arc89
4th outfielder that plays defense with no power. Just another minor deal. Not sure why they are not looking for power hitters?
southi
Great acquisition. Would rather Reed be in Atlanta instead of Duvall.
worthington
Should have just kept Gorkys fergawdsakes.
Stephencf07
Yeah, what team wouldn’t want a guy who had a .285 OBP last season lmao
Guayacon
The giants are signing all others team reject, way to go I see a last place

Literally half of the comments on this article (this one included) don’t even seem to have grasped the basics of what transaction even occurred. There was no “signing” of anyone – it was a trade… Andreoli isn’t a “replacement” for Reed – he’s just the player headed back in the deal… and what “power hitters” would that other guy like them to target!? lol geez this comment section is a mess!
Pickle_Britches
Lol you’re a tool

“The giants are signing all others team reject, (sic)”
Great comment since no other teams seem to be signing guys off the waiver wire…oh,… wait…

Hey brain surgeons, who and what would it take to pry a young power hitting outfielder away from another team ? Mad Bum ? Rodriguez, a reliever or two ?
sfjackcoke
MIN couldn’t roster Reed and SFG could, its about roster fit. Giants had like 4 guys, Maybin, a rule 5 guy, some MiLB free agents in camp to be the RH bench OF who’s capable of playing CF, they all failed so the job goes to Reed.
MIN signed Reed about a week before Zaidi was hired, else I’m sure he’d would have had interest back then. For Reed MIN get some $ + a non 40 man player, wouldn’t be surprised if it was Rule 5 type money $25-50K.
Reed’s minor league line shows no hint of power till 2018, did he rework his swing/launch angle or….. anyone know?

The Giants need depth, athleticism and versatility in the outfield. Duggar is the CF’er. Williamson will get an April audition to try and be the everyday LF’er. Parra is in RF. Hanson, Belt and Solarte can all play outfield. Should Joe and Reed make the team, they can also play OF. Too many no trade clauses and bad existing contracts to try and make what some would perceive to be a meaningful acquisition. Harper recused their offer. Other dudes were too old and would have had trouble in the expansive outfield in SF. The team is healthy, they’ve gotten younger, top tier bullpen and a good starting rotation. I think Zaidi has done well adding new talent. We’ll see how it plays out.

Well said 22clark

Why Andreoli? He’s pretty much the same guy as Reed, except older… Could’ve used more bullpen depth, or a low level prospect.
Jjbeach
I suspect the Twins couldn’t keep Reed, so took what they could: a non-40-man-roster player and a little cash. Twins probably also wanted Reed to have a chance to play. It’s a good move for everyone.
Pickle_Britches
He’s signing and trading players that had real good success in the upper minors last year hoping on a guy to come through, like max muncy did for him last season. He’s trying hard to find that hidden gem–
jorge78
Another outfielder?
Pickle_Britches
Yes
Rich Hill’s Elbow
As one of the fastest players in the game (13th according to baseball savant), hopefully Andreoli can help us in the same way Dyson and Gore helped the Royals in 2014-15.
GarryHarris
Can anyone remember a worse OF than this 2019 SFG version?
Pickle_Britches
This SFG team I think is going to surprise some folks.. As long as they stay healthy and get a good year out of Mac/Duggar/Parra they will win more games then expected. I think fangraphs has them coming in at 72-90 Last place. I think they will finish 84-78. 2nd place, 4 games behind LA. Their bullpen will be top 5, their D will be top 5, and starting pitching will be top 5.
GarryHarris
I just don’t see the greatness in Steven Duggar’s but Manager Brice Bochum always knows his team and gets the most from everyone.
1975 Montreal Expos gets my vote for worst: LF Jim Dwyer/Bob Bailey, CF Pepe Manguel, RF Larry Biitner.
