Yankees Acquire Mike Tauchman From Rockies

By Ty Bradley | March 23, 2019 at 3:35pm CDT

Per a team release, the Yankees have acquired OF Mike Tauchman from Colorado for lefty Phillip Diehl. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery was placed on the 60-day IL to make 40-man room for the outfielder.

Tauchman, 28, has just 69 MLB plate appearances under his belt despite a monster minor-league performance over the last two seasons. With AAA-Albuquerque in 2018, Tauchman slashed .323/.408/.571 with an outstanding 12.7% BB/14.9% K plate-discipline profile. ZiPS projects the lefty, who could see time at all three outfield spots for New York, to post a solid 96 wRC+/1.9 WAR season over 513 plate appearances in 2018.

Diehl, 24, moved to the bullpen full-time in the New York farm last season, to mostly excellent results. He didn’t crack the team’s top 30 prospects at either Baseball America or MLB.com, but if his 14.61 K/9 at high-A Tampa is any indication, the lefty’ll certainly be on the radar of the Rockies brass.

@bostonbob It’s not a bad idea to have OF depth beyond Ellsbury. The guy is made of glass. Who knows how long he’ll be able to remain on the field without injury once he does finally get healthy. Lol, when he’s finally healthy I wouldn’t doubt he steps on a lego and is out for the year.

Depth is good. Tauchman is an excellent fielder who has always hit in AAA but never in MLB. Worth having around in case.

Shows they don’t have a ton of faith in Clint Frazier. Concussions suck.

I think they would prefer to let Frazier play everyday rather than sit on the bench and play 2 or 3 times a week. This guy is purely 4th OF to AAA shuffle. No more.

Frazier lost a year to concussion symptoms, and it showed in ST.

It would be best to let him recalibrate in the minors.

      • southbeachbully

It’s because they don’t have much depth in the OF with Ellsbury just beginning monitored and restrictive baseball activities and the smart idea of letting Frazier play everyday in AAA util he’s ready to be called up and take over in LF.

It’s smart to add AAA depth. We had tons of depth in the OF at the beginning of 2018 but either lost the depth thru injuries or minor league trades. Ended up needing to trade for McCutchen.

OOTP doesn’t suck, maybe for someone who wants to bat and pitch with a controller. but for video game GM’s it’s a blast. no feeling better than getting a little known player and watch him turn into a beast

I like OOTP, but OOTP’s UI could be a bit more user friendly. I love the management aspect of baseball but that game makes everything feel so tedious. When theres a learning curve to just finding your way around, and not the game itself, theres a problem.

Man, the show has gotten stagnant as a franchise. Speaking of a stagnant franchise, thats the game mode theyre the laziest with! All people have wanted for years is a stadium builder ala MVP Baseball 05 and theyre JUST adding contract extensions while boasting about their new season mode as if season mode is a new thing. I skipped 18. I’m getting 19 though mainly because I have the itch to paint some corners. Maybe in a decade SD Studios will add three way trades to franchise and the ability to do stuff with your money in Road to the Show (like in MLB Power Pros 2008). Thats a big maybe though.

I know they say “nothing wagered nothing gained”, but this might just turn out “nothing wagered, lefty power hitter gained”. A long shot, I know, because those triple A numbers are in a hitter friendly league, but still, back to back seasons of .950 OPS shouldn’t be dismissed.

Ellsbury is the exact reason why some teams stay away from long term big money signings. Lots of money tied up and nothing to show for it

I would not be surprised if Ellsbury never plays another game for the Yanks. Or that Frazier gets traded before ever cracking the team.

My view on a trade of Frazier, is he’s still potential n not a miss in the show. Therefore teams may give up more.
