Giants Release Cameron Maybin

By Jeff Todd | March 22, 2019 at 6:31pm CDT

The Giants announced that they have released veteran outfielder Cameron Maybin, as Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group was among those to tweet. It is not clear at this time if Maybin opted out of his contract.

While it had seemed at one point that Maybin would likely crack Giants roster out of camp, the club obviously decided to go with another direction. It’s possible that an outside addition will end up filling the need for a reserve outfielder that can step in at times in center for youngster Steven Duggar.

A regrettable mid-spring DUI arrest surely did not help Maybin’s cause. He also failed to do much with his opportunities in the lineup, posting a meager .483 OPS in 48 Cactus League plate appearances.

Over the past two seasons in the majors, Maybin has carried a .237/.322/.351 batting line with 14 home runs and 43 steals in 834 total plate appearances. The 31-year-old has never been a consistent offensive threat, but is still viewed as a quality defender.

Hey Giants: Check in with the Twinkies on Tyler Austin = to platoon with Belt and either Jake Cave LHB, (option remaining) & Michael Reed RHB (out of options) for 4th OF that can play all 3 positions. What have you got to trade?

You’re going to turn Belt into a platoon player based on one bad year against lefties? That doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.

Making a platoon player out of Belt makes complete sense. His output was awful last year.

1 Belt doesn’t need a platoon hitter (Austin)
2 The SFG don’t need any more LHH they have too many as it is (Cave)
3 Reed fits the profile they seek in as much as someone can scout a MiLB page.

That is a CF capable OF (Oracle is big) who hits RH and some semblance of hit/obp skills, some doubles pop is a plus as are the ability to mash LHP..

There are far more dangerous first baseman. High OBP is his only good stat. Are we relying on one good stat to prove worthiness of a starting 1B job?

        • Pickle_Britches

He’s got serious D. Most defensive runs saved for a 1b since 2012 buddy. And he was on DL last 2 years for a bit. He’s got pop too and he can draw his share of walks. He also hits in the West half the season which most parks out west are pitchers parks

        • Deke

I’m telling you this for free. I’m not a Belt fan, he kinda annoys me but if he played in a more hitter friendly park…. like say he played for the Red Sox, Yankees or Jays… the dude would hit 20 more home runs a year and he would be considered a stud.

          .260 ba

You giant fan see any of this number???

        • thethrill

His biggest issue is staying healthy, if he can’t stay healthy than no you’re not going to see those #’s. He’s only averaging 392 AB’s a season, not good. Only had over 500 AB’s in 2 seasons, sophomore year and 2016. In 2016 he hit 17 HR, 82 RBI, and .275 BA. He can’t stay on the field and plays at AT&T/Oracle Field where LeftCenter is a monster.
And yes he has a.266 career ba so see that number almost every year.

        • tad2b13

BA, HRs, and RBI? The 1950’s called and want their antiquated analytics back.

        • BoSoxWin

One of the biggest misconceptions in baseball is that Fenway is a HR hitters park. Fenway always ends up in the 15th – 20th range for total HRs hit, and for LH batters it is one of the top 3-5 hardest ballparks to hit HRs out of.

Fenway does allow a lot of doubles though with the Monster and large RF. Now of Belt played in Yankees Stadium or Cincinnati or Milwaukee, I’d completely agree with you.

        • Deke

That’s interesting. I always thought of Fenway as a lefties paradise. But yeah I guess if you hit the ball into the green monster that’s effectively “hitting it where they ain’t”

        • Deke

You know if I could decide for my own entertainment I would say that they should leave SF as it is. But I also realize that what entertains me isn’t what wnetertains

        • Deke

Pressed send too soon. What entertains me isn’t what most fans want to see. So I agree. I think SF should make the park more hitter friendly.

        • Visco104

Defense is less valuable to me because it’s easier than hitting 97 mph and Belt being injured is not an excuse it’s another flaw in his game to anyone else. If the Giants were smart they would platoon him. He would be a lot hotter instead of being a C+ player in his above average years. I’m just saying a platoon isn’t the worst thing to consider with the Giants being an awful team.

        • tad2b13

No manager or GM is going to platoon a guy with a 124 career OPS+ and a career wRC+ of 125, for a guy like Tyler Austin whose OPS+ and wRC+ are 24 and 25 points less for what would amount to a marginal platoon advantage. Seriously, teams do not platoon the 2nd best hitter on the team. Especially when Belt plays elite defense, making the entire IF better, saving bad throws, and a platoon would mean a RH thrower at 1B which is another defensive disadvantage.

        • Visco104

Did I ever say the guy he should be platooning with should be Tyler Austin? No. That was another guy. If he’s the second best hitter on the team then that just goes to show how awful the Giants are. MadBum has more pop than Belt does

        • andremets

If Belt is your second best hitter (and Posey is your best), then it’s time to rebuild. They both still have solid on-base skills but there so many hitters out there. Giants will easily finish in the bottom 5 in runs scored this year. If you seriously wanted to maximize run scoring this year, then platooning with Tyler Austin WOULD make you better.

And that may be the only 3 “true “ outfielders they keep. Belt, Hanson, Solarte and Joe can all play outfield. Hot hand plays. This scenario keeps Pablo in the fold. Boston still paying his salary so might as well let him have this final year.

The Giants are 2 key injuries away from losing 100 games this year. The new GM has his work cut out for him…this is a 3-5 year project to turn this team around (at least).
