Mariners Acquire Austin Adams From Nationals

By Ty Bradley | May 4, 2019 at 2:50pm CDT

Per a team release, the Mariners have acquired righty Austin Adams from the Nationals for lefty Nick Wells and cash considerations.

Adams, 28 tomorrow, was designated for assignment earlier in the week by Washington. He’s spent much of the last three seasons with the team’s AAA affiliate (now in Fresno), where his sky-high strikeout rates (13.88 per nine in ’17, 15.15 per nine in ’18) ranked among the league’s best. His walk rate, too, was relatively low for an extreme bat-misser, so it’s a bit odd the reliever-starved Nationals couldn’t afford to give him a longer look.

Wells, 23, is repeating High-A Modesto as a 23-year-old. He didn’t rank among the team’s top 30 prospects at Baseball America’s last update.

Serious question whether or not you’re serious about Rizzo needing to go.

He misses on a couple of relievers and you want to get rid of him? Dombrowski also has bad bullpens every year. Some teams get lucky like the Yankees and have an AAA pitcher step up and shine in middle relief every year. They had Green in 2017, Holder last year and so far it’s been Cessa this year. Rizzo never has any luck like that. He has thrown money at players like Rosenthal and traded for Barraclough. So, you can’t say he hasn’t tried. Imho I think the problem is the coaching. If ownership would actually pay for some of the top coaches they might be in a better spot. They need a good veteran manager like Girardi to manage a veteran team. He has never been known as a good bullpen manager but he has always gotten the best out of guys like Adam Warren, David Huff, Chasen Shreve and Justin Wilson. Remember Matt Thornton a few years ago? Good decent loogy. Then the Yankees signed him and he had a career year in 2014. I don’t think he allowed a single run after the Nats acquired. I would like to see them get some premium coaching before Scherzer, Strasburg and Rendon are in the twilight of their careers. Since they have Rizzo they have players like Soto and Turner who will be ready to step up. Get rid of him and I doubt you will see another GM that drafts or signs internationally nearly as well. And the Nationals still won’t go to the World Series because ownership will continue to refuse to invest in premium coaching. But hey, let’s just go ahead and burn him in effigy because Gott has had a good couple of months in San Francisco. It’s not like he didn’t completely suck for 2 years in Washington. AJ Cole had a good couple of months with the Yankees last year too. We’ll use a little extra gas for that too.

Rizzo has NOT proven anything as a GM in so far as winning a Pennant or with arming a strong Bullpen EVER with the Nats! He got Scherzer,

I need help! There are two Austin Adams (Adamses, Adams’?) in the MLB. One who has a very nice beard and one who played for the Indians and was pretty bad a couple of years ago (2015 or so). This same thing happened in 2012 and 2013 when there was two David Carpenters. One played for the Braves and one played for the Angels. Then, they both played on the Braves at the same time. Also in 2013, there was two Henry Rodriguezes. One was a 2B and the other was a pitcher for the Nationals and Cubs. Same thing with Juan Perez the pitcher and Juan Perez the outfielder. So my idea is that if there are multiple players with the same last name, then only one can be in the MLB. Sorry Asdrubal, Melky, and Miguel but only one of you can stay. The fans at the start of a season have to vote to keep one of the players. This is not for players with the same first names. Thank you

      Time to use middle initials.
      Why is this not obvious?

Austin Adams is just too wild at this time. Maybe SEA can fix him; his walk rate has been relatively HIGH at every level!

I wouldn’t put “Seattle” and “fixing” anything about a baseball player in the same sentence, ever.

“Fixed” Paxton. He’s been top notch since. They’re headed in the right direction. I’m actually pleased with how their front office is shaping. It’s not Houston or TB—but time and money will allow them to.

No one here seems to “get it” … Rizzo acquired Austin Adams thinking the same as everyone. Austin has proven to be a great minor league reliever he probably had the best “stuff” and pitching repertoire in the Nationals system bar none..

However, every single time he’d see a major league ball park and get a summons from the bullpen he would completely implode and melt down.

Austin does not have command issues. He has stage fright. He can’t seem to overcome his stage fright … at least in the time he’s been with the Nationals starting in 2017. THREE SEASONS! Its Jekyll and Hyde! He’s great in the high minors, in AAA and horrible every single time he’s appeared in the majors. He struggles to get through one inning! It is stage fright, its totally mental. Maybe they have a psych type in Seattle who can help him deal with it?

And that Ty Bradley is the reason the Nats decided to option him again … and finally DFA him. Last season the Natioals had many occasions when they needed bullpen help … no Austin. …. even at the end of the season with expanded rosters … no Austin. That means the manager and pitching coach did not have any confidence in him.
