Craig Kimbrel To Join Cubs’ Triple-A Affiliate

By George Miller | June 16, 2019 at 5:32pm CDT

Cubs free-agent acquisition Craig Kimbrel is scheduled to join the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, tweets Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. Since signing with his new club, Kimbrel had been working at the Cubs’ complex in Arizona, but will now travel to Sacramento for his first game action, which is slated for Tuesday, adds Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

The 31-year-old Kimbrel, fresh off signing a 3-year, $43MM contract, has yet to appear in a professional game this season, but that will change this week, with the electric closer set to get some minor-league seasoning before he appears out of a Major League bullpen. While it doesn’t appear that Kimbrel will be in Chicago by the June 20 mark that was tentatively suggested by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, one would imagine that Kimbrel should be ready for big league competition before too long.

And the reinforcements couldn’t come too early for the Cubs, a team that has fielded a bullpen that as a whole has graded out as roughly average thus far. While the Cubs’ most pressing need might be left-handed relievers, Kimbrel will no doubt strengthen a unit that features just two players sporting a FIP below 4.00. As a team, the Cubs have blown 12 saves in 2019, and while saves are of course a flawed metric, the number is nonetheless indicative of the current unit’s lack of reliability.

On the flip side, for his career, Kimbrel’s FIP sits at an outlandish 1.96, placing him in the company of some of the game’s all-time great relief pitchers. And while last season gave way to some red flags—especially in the postseason—any bullpen would benefit from adding an arm like Kimbrel’s. Currently sitting in first place in the NL Central, the 39-31 Cubs will welcome the stability, debth, and experience that Kimbrel should provide.

As of now, reports that Kimbrel’s stuff has looked as good as ever in workouts are the only basis upon which to evaluate Kimbrel’s readiness, but the coming days will give scouts and fans alike their first look at Kimbrel’s dynamic stuff since last October. Needless to say, the intensity of game action—even in the minor leagues—is a far cry from the private showcases that Kimbrel conducted during his free agency, and a nearly eight-month hiatus from affiliated games will surely require some time to readjust to the grind of a Major-League season. With that in mind, though, the Cubs can look forward to the impending addition of an elite bullpen arm as the race for playoff position intensifies.

No doubt Kimbrel has/had the stuff and up until recently was always considered elite. The test now will be how/will he adjust to the new/juiced baseball which isn’t completely new to this year. Hit it high and let it fly could be a problem.

As a Cubs fan, are you not the least bit worried this is going to become a mini version of the JayHey/Yu Darvish deals? Even if he does perform well for the Cubs in this shortened season, it still seems pretty obvious (after last postseason) that he is never going to have the endurance to close out games in any future deep playoff runs the Cubs might have. He has always only had the stamina to be a 1 inning pitcher even during non-playoff seasons when he was at his best. Furthermore, if he is actually even going to be able to perform well during this shortest season of his career, why didn’t he just take the best 1-year deal he could get and hit the FA market after this season with no QO? That’s what Keuchel was adamant he was going to do. Keuchel believed in himself enough to relish the chance to prove himself this season so he can really get paid in the offseason. Why doesn’t Kimbrel think he will pitch well enough this season to warrant a $43 million contract in just a few months from now? If he were really going to be a different pitcher than he was last October he would have a chip on his shoulder and want to prove it so he could get a bigger contract. This was literally the worst season of Kimbrel’s career to have to bargain a multi-year contract off of. Why wouldn’t he want to dominate for a few months and then bargain off that without the compensation attached? It seems like he is scrambling around for as much as he can get now because he doubts anyone will believe he was worth it in just a few short months.

Why is it taking him so long to even start pitching in the minors? He signed before Keuchel did and Keuchel has already made multiple minor league starts and his next one will be at the major league level. It seems like Kimbrel doesn’t trust his ability to consistently perform at the major league level the way Keuchel does. Why wouldn’t Kimbrel just go for the biggest 1 year deal he could get and then dominate so he could hit the FA market in a few months without draft compensation attached? The only reason I can figure is that he doesn’t believe he will be able to dominate well enough to be worthy of a $43 million contract. Keuchel was adamant on a 1 year deal so he could actually prove he would pitch well enough to earn a bigger pay day in the upcoming offseason. It’s hard to trust a pitcher that doesn’t really trust himself.

They need to rush him if they are gonna catch the Brewers or the Braves or the Dodgers… unless they only signed him for next year and the year after when he won’t be able to help them in the postseason anyway.

What I mean is: how is it that Keuchel can sit through multiple weather delays and still get 2 starts under his belt before Kimbrel even throws a professional pitch? Kimbrel is the reliever. He is the one that can pitch multiple games in a row. Keuchel got delayed, then pitched 7 innings, then took 4 days rest, then pitched 7 more innings, then took a few more days rest and is slated to START a game in the majors THIS week. Keuchel was signed after Kimbrel. Why can’t Kimbrel even have thrown a pitch throughout all that time? It makes no sense unless Kimbrel has not taken care of himself the way Keuchle has. If that is the case, the Cubs just gave a 2-3 year contract to a man that doesn’t care about his craft anymore while, at last showing, was terrible at it. No wonder he didn’t want a 1 year deal. He knew that he could never back it up enough to get paid in the off season.

This explains their irrational hatred of the White Sox—it threatens their belief system.

I still can’t believe that Northwest Indiana White Sux trolls is actually thing, but I do appreciate the hilarity of it. Poor clowns, in spite of being in a major market (technically) they are forced to operate like a small market club due to the fact that the North siders gobble up all the ratings, attendance, revenue, top FAs, national and local attention/media.

I almost feel bad for laughing at them… almost. It must be brutal to cheer for a completely irrelevant team. I imagine most of these trolls aren’t actually W Sux fans. First of all, they don’t have that many fans Second, they have to know how silly they look attempting to troll ANY team. It’s already obvious that they’re jealous and obsessed with anything Cubs, but they don’t have to double down and be so obvious about it. LMAO
