Mets To Select Chris Mazza, Designate Ryan O’Rourke

By Connor Byrne | June 26, 2019 at 2:57pm CDT

2:57pm: The Mets will designate lefty Ryan O’Rourke for assignment to open up space for Mazza, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News tweets. The 31-year-old O’Rourke signed a minor league contract with the Mets in the offseason. He threw 1 1/3 innings with the Mets earlier this year, and has mostly spent the season at the Triple-A level. O’Rourke has registered a 3.31 ERA/4.44 FIP with 9.09 K/9, 4.68 BB/9 and a 52.3 percent grounder rate in 32 2/3 innings with Syracuse.

2:04pm: The Mets plan to select right-hander Chris Mazza’s contract from Triple-A Syracuse, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com tweets. They’ll need to create a 40-man spot for Mazza.

The 29-year-old Mazza will work out of the Mets’ bullpen when they promote him, per DiComo. Mazza hasn’t yet taken a major league mound since entering the pro ranks as a 27th-round pick of the Twins in 2011. He ascended to the Triple-A level for the first time last year as a member of the Marlins and has primarily pitched there this season with the Mets’ top affiliate.

Mazza has worked to a 3.67 ERA/4.06 FIP with 8.08 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 49 innings at Syracuse this season. Overall, he owns a 3.74 Triple-A ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 across 65 frames.

It’s kind of pathetic the guy would rather root against the Mets than for I assume the Yankees.

Assume nothing bird. A fan can both root for the Yankees and laugh a lot at the continually pathetic state of the Mets.

Talk about never giving up; Chris Mazza seemed quite determined to reach the big leagues. Stuck it out in the minors for nearly all of the twentys and at 29 he’s finally reaching the show. A nice story.

It’s Allan, not Allen. (I feel like Hermoine Granger saying it’s not LE-VIO-SAW, it’s LE-VIOSA)

They really owe it to the fans to hold a contest, and whoever wins it, gets to pitch an inning out of the bullpen for one game. They couldn’t possibly be much worse than whoever they throw out there at this point.

But that would make a travesty of the Mets organization! Oh, wait, never mind…..

Dominic Smith by himself could fetch a solid, If not two bullpen arms. He’s proven he can hit MLB pitching. Some team (Giants? Marlins?) need to make him their everyday 1B in 2020.

Never should have removed Vargas last night. He had the Phillies number with 10 Ks. Even with all those Ks, he had only thrown 77 pitches after 6 1/3 IP. Calloway really confuses me some nights. I give him until the all-star break before our former player’s agent turned GM gives him his walking papers.

How desperate are the Mets? They have nothing to trade for established major leaguers, no outfielders ready for the majors and relying on other teams castoffs to throw the ball, but they didn’t need Kimbrel OR Kuechel? They have FOUR outfielders starting who are infielders!!!!! Calloway needs to be fired, for no other reason, because Cano continues to bat 3rd. It’s so bad here that Lagares still has a roster spot. To make matters worse, he pulls Vargas with a 4-1 lead after just 77 pitches who had the Phillies completely off balance.
