Red Sox To Sign Chris Owings

By Jeff Todd | June 17, 2019 at 3:41pm CDT

The Red Sox have inked a minors deal with infielder Chris Owings, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe (via Twitter). He’ll spend some time at extended spring training before heading to Triple-A.

Owings was released previously by the Royals. They’ll remain obligated to him for the $3MM promised over the winter, less any amount of the pro-rated minimum that he might earn in the majors for the rest of the season.

Signed in hopes he’d bounce back in K.C., Owings ended up falling deeper into a malaise at the plate. He ended up slashing a meager .133/.193/.222 in his 145 plate appearances. The Red Sox will see if they can help the versatile defender find a groove in hopes that he could be a second-half roster option at an affordable rate of pay.

Strange pickup, hope it proves me wrong. He needs to get a couple relievers before the 3 main guy’s arms fall off.

who knows, maybe that’s why he’s going to extended spring training first

Not too strange if they’re shopping Xander Bogaerts. I think a trade for an ace is in the works and I think it’s Xander Bogaerts and JBJ

Why would they shop a player that they JUST signed an extension with? JBJ and Ryan Brasier are good options for a good return. A blockbuster involving Martinez could mean a great arm in return, let’s hope not.

Oh right..I wasn’t up on the Xander Bogaerts extension. Somebody told me about an hour ago that Michael Chavis and Raffi Devers were traded for Thor. I couldn’t believe it so I started looking. I guess I should’ve researched more..

@Cma67 that was a trade that a fan proposed on MLB Network’s The Rundown. Dan O’Dowd rated it a 00 out of a 1-5 scale (also said that was the worst trade offer he’s ever heard)

Have they been smokin something to think they would let Devers go? Never happen. Every yr the press wanna sell JBJ, I don’t believe it.

Oh ic. Michael Chavis is boy, my pops favorites Devers..we’re both happy then. Geez tho..what are they gonna do if Chavis continues to struggle with high heat? Wonder if he’s long-term answer at 1b or 2b

I see Chavis as a right handed Max Muncy with a higher floor and slightly higher ceiling

LOL. Move us only injury insurance or perhaps if they find a taker for Nunez which I doubt. Holt, Nunez, Devers, Chavis and Hernandez all on the roster.

Chavis is a keeper and can play 2nd or 1st. Fevers is playing much better defense at third. Keep them both.

What team wants Bogaerts and 29 yr old Jackie Bradley for an “ace” lol

What team wouldn’t want the best SS in the AL..especially with his young age and team friendly contract? But sure, JBJ is a soon to be FA, so that makes zero sense. But “since May 20th your OPS leaders are Trout (1.112), JBJ (1.055), Xander (1.051)” per Red Sox Notes. LOL.

Many teams would gladly take Bogaerts, the most forgotten clutch hitter of the last eighteen months. Look up his stats with runners in scoring position, with two outs and with two strikes. Contract extension seems like a team steal as of today. Problem with any deal is most teams willing to trade an ace want even younger players than Bogie.

Are we sure he wasn’t on the Red Sox for the seasons first 3 months and is now headed to the Royals after stinking it up?

What? What’s even the joke here? Yeah we’re pretty sure he wasn’t on the Red Sox nor is he headed to the royals after “stinking it up” — am I missing some hilarious inside joke here? otherwise this seems like a really lame and strange attempt at some sort of joke? lol

I believe he is joking about the fact that most struggling players get dropped by playoff contenders and picked up by tanking teams, not the other way around.

Nah, Owings can be bad at multiple positions, Chris Getz could only play one position poorly.

Chris Getz wasn’t good, but he probably wouldn’t even crack the top 50 list of “Worst Royals Players Ever”.

I think a lot of you guys missed the Royals from 1996-2007.

I was painfully aware of the 96-07 teams. The aggregate of those teams was certainly worse but for me to be on the list you need sustained levels of atrociousness. Like Joe Vitiello or Kit Pellow or Abraham Nunez or Chip Ambres or Calvin Pickering or Ambiorix Burgos or Andrew Sisco were not significant enough to earn worst ever.

Yankees get EE, Sox get Chris Owings???Maybe Dombrowski & Cashman BOTH need to stay at a Holiday Inn before they trade/sign anybody else. They BOTH need pitching!!

Encarnacion was/is a HUGE upgrade over Morales who he replaced and for just a few million dollars and their 26th ranked prospect who hasn’t played 1 inning of professional baseball yet and my never make it to the big leagues. This was a deal the Yankees/Cashman couldn’t pass up.

Appreciate the Red Sox saving the Royals three months worth of the pro-rated league minimum. Penny saved…

It’s a minors league deal so there’s no pro rated savings….yet lol. You’ll have to wait just a bit longer.

Peanuts. You’ll cover it next time your row sits behind 3rd base at the ballpark and buys 18 beers and 24 boxes of cracker jacks.

Dombrowski said Encarnacion was considered as a trade target but Sox could not justify signing him because he was not
“A good fit anywhere on 2019 Red Sox roster.”
