Royals Release Drew Storen

By Connor Byrne | June 19, 2019 at 8:36pm CDT

The Royals have released right-handed reliever Drew Storen, according to Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com. Storen had been with the organization since it signed him to a minor league deal in February.

The Royals assigned Storen to the Double-A level in May, which was a sizable step forward in his rehab process from the Tommy John surgery he underwent as a Red in September 2017. However, the 31-year-old Storen then gave up nine earned runs on 15 hits and five walks (with 12 strikeouts) in 10 1/3 innings, which caused the Royals to get rid of him.

Storen, best known for his stint as a Nationals reliever from 2010-15, will now seek another big league organization. Also a former Mariner and Blue Jay, Storen has pitched to a 3.45 ERA/3.44 FIP with 8.52 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and a 46.1 percent groundball rate in 440 1/3 innings at baseball’s highest level. Storen has also converted 99 of 123 save chances, though his days as a closer appear long gone.

    He’s also pitched with the Reds. Can’t believe he’s only 31.

    Connor, why can’t you guys say
    “…has compiled a 3.45 ERA..?”
    You pitch to batters, not statistics! You compile statistics! OK, I’m done!
    Now get off my lawn!

    Thought he had a real future once. Sad. On a side note Cubs announcer Jim Deshaies on Max Scherzer. “ Now Max has a blue eye, A brown eye and Black eye. Funny guy

    Kind of off topic;

    but i don’t think I have ever seen a pitcher’s FIP almost match is ERA exactly. He’s .001 away lol

    Don’t worry, Drew. Theo will picke you up, and you can toil in the minors for my Cubs.
    Theo’s never met a dumpster fire that he didn’t think he could put out

    This guy used to be great. He is a perfect example of why GM’s (like Brodie Van Wagenen and AJ Pereller) can’t just focus on statistics. They have to focus on delivery and mechanics. Those 2 things can be very predictive when it comes to pitchers. Especially pitchers that throw at a high velocity. Especially bullpen relief pitchers. Wilson? Jeurys Familia? Not that he was a relief pitcher, but didn’t anyone learn anything from Giants multiple Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum? It doesn’t matter if you throw 96 or 106… if your delivery is unorthodox you are probably going to blow your elbow or (even worse) your shoulder out.

    DD just cut Carson Smith loose; there may be a spot for Storen @ Pawtucket AAA, minor league deal.
    The R Sox have gone to a youngish bullpen and it seems to be working.
    Hopefully a guy like Durbin Feltman @ Portland AA will be ready for
    ‘The Show” come Sept. ’19.
