Athletics Designate Brian Schlitter

By Jeff Todd | July 29, 2019 at 2:13pm CDT

The Athletics have designated righty Brian Schlitter for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot goes to the just-acquired Jake Diekman.

Additionally, the Oakland org announced that right-hander Jharel Cotton has been activated from the 60-day injured list. He was optioned down to Triple-A.

Schlitter, 33, has seen sporadic MLB action since his 2010 debut, appearing in parts of four seasons. This year, with Oakland, he allowed four runs on a dozen hits with six walks and four strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings of work. Schlitter has spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he carries a 3.89 ERA in 34 2/3 frames with 7.0 K/9 and 1.3 BB/9.

Odd comment to put in this thread when the A’s can offer Luzardo or Puk along with Mateo while the Twins seem to say Lewis and Kirilloff are not available..

Luzardo? Haha not a chance Bean trades him! Everyone else yes!

Luzardo wont be dealt because he’s been dealing with injuries all year and has a TJ in his back pocket. If we deal with NYM for Thor, Puk will be the one heading out. And I dont think we make that deal.

Puk had TJ more recently than Luzardo did.

I’ll go with what Susan Slusser says over someone that doesn’t know how to spell Beane.

Puk did have a more recent TJ but he hasnt had multiple injuries afterwards. Luzardo has missed most of this season.

I do agree in that Luzardo seems to have a higher ceiling but a lower floor. But just looking at it, there is little chance that either of those pitchers will contribute more for the rest of this season and next than Syndergaard, so there is that upside for the team fighting for the playoffs (Oakland). And the Met”s get a top 30 prospect acquiring either pitcher along with other parts.

If the A’s fall out of contention next year, or in the 2020 off season when Syndergaard becomes too expensive for the A’s, then they can flip him.

Twins would take a starter and move Pineda to the pen…

Do not sleep on the Cardinals, they can be the underdog to acquire Thor.

The only other option would be Wang. But, you are splitting hairs there too. And I really doubt there are not 1 or 2 more deals for the A’s coming up by Wednesday.

With Puk, Luzardo, Cotton, Mateo, and Neuse all potentially being ready, it’s just a matter of time. Beau Taylor, Wang, Tanner Anderson.. their time is almost up.

You forgot Murphy. Just my opinion, but you have to keep him, and one of Puk/Luzardo. The rest, are close to MLB ready and should be available if you can get a dominant starter, especially with some club control, before the end of the month.

Probably wouldn’t have traded for Diekman in the first place. I don’t see any absolute need for a third lefty.

Low strikeouts, high walks, high xFIP. He was getting lucky and was only doing it in a mop up role. Never earned the 40 man spot as he was average in AAA at best. He’s like a poor man’s Blake Parker
