The Brewers will call up outfielder Trent Grisham in time for tomorrow’s game against the Athletics, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy). Earlier today, ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan tweeted that the move was likely. Grisham isn’t currently on the 40-man roster, so an accommodating move will have to be made before he hits the field.
Grisham, who went by “Trent Clark” when he was drafted 15th overall in 2015, received some top-100 prospect list attention prior to the 2016 season. From 2016-2018, however, Grisham showed some decent on-base numbers but was overall lacking at the plate.
Still, the Brewers kept promoting him through the system, and Grisham finally made his big breakthrough this season. After an .875 OPS over 283 Double-A plate appearances earned him another step up the ladder, Grisham tore up Triple-A pitching to the tune of a .381/.471/.776 slash line over 158 PA. (This included a stunning game on Tuesday that included hitting for the cycle and adding a second home run for good measure.)
While playing in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League undoubtedly contributed to his Triple-A explosion, MLB Pipeline’s profile of Grisham cites a preseason change to his batting stance that has clearly paid major dividends. The 22-year-old is now set to make his big league debut, and between his quality baserunning, ability to play all three outfield positions, and improved bat, Grisham becomes an intriguing part-time asset for the Brewers.
Now that Jesus Aguilar has been traded to the Rays, Ryan Braun could potentially see some time at first base as a platoon partner with one of Milwaukee’s two left-handed hitting first base options (Travis Shaw and Eric Thames). This could open up some outfield playing time for Grisham, though the Brewers also have another left-handed hitting outfielder in Ben Gamel.
DarkSide830
probably replacing Taylor on the 40 man.
Perksy
Why did they call him up, if he’s not going to play?
mrmaster1
I’m rather disappointed with Stearns. They made no significant moves that make the pitching staff better. Pomerantz? Wow.
brewcrew08
They added bodies and that’s really it. Lyles, Pomeranz and Faria are all innings eaters if everything goes right. Disappointed in the return for Dubon but the elite arms were probably out of the brewers reach given their well below average farm.
stubby66
I know what your saying and I’m sure Dubon will only be an average player but I wish him the best. In all honesty if I’m the Brewers i would seriously look at bringing in Iglesias for short this winter. Kinda nervous for offseason .
DarkSide830
few very good teams did. in fact, it seems like the wild card picture got more crowded, rather then less so as we had expected.
Karlander
Stearns added more mediocrity and losers. What is a clear failure by Stearns is that the lack of starting talent and depth was clearly known last Winter. Stearns failure to address it + underachieving key players is exactly why the Brewers have been lousy compared to last season. They would be a last place team without Yellich.
brewcrew08
Brewers have the starting pitching depth it’s just not filled with great talent. Woodruff, Davies, Gio, Houser, Nelson, Chacin, Suter, Anderson, Peralta, Pomeranz, Faria, Lyles can all start. Stearns needs to find a way to add a legit 1 and a solid 2 this offseason. If he can do that then plug in Woodruff at 3 the rotation would look solid.
Vanilla Good
Yeah he’s been absolutely raking lately so why not?
stubby66
Now I like the Aguilar trade so were able to bring up Trent along with the pitcher we got but we shouldnt have traded Dubon think we would have been further ahead to Dfa Saladino along with signing Ty Blach . I get that Black can hit 100 mph and could learn to harness it . But high site is 20/20

Hindsight not high site
stubby66
Are you sure how do you know I dont have a little wacky weed with me .lol
Karlander
With better hindsight, I would not have read your post
jobusrum9
I re-read it with high sight and am even more confused.
Matt Galvin
Dubon blocked by Arcia and could have gotten Dyson or Watson or even Smith back instead.
Bchsom16
How do you know what they could have gotten?
Do you really think Stearns didnt ask about those three?
braves25
They probably felt Dubon was expendable due to having Hiura at the mlb level and then having Turang behind him.
ballnglove
Expendable yes, but do dump him for a couple of pitchers with ERA’s north of 6? Bad trade.
Briffle2
67 walks and 72 strikeouts this season in the minors, very nice.
julio1221
Ryan Braun will still at Left field and thames in first base i dont understand how this team do not aquire a starting
Pitcher
augold5
Lyles is a SP and pitched well last night. The price for TOR pitchers was too steep for the Brewers weak farm.
padam
For the record, the ballpark he’s played triple A in is not your typical Pacific league park. Considering he had the cycle +HR, that’s quite the accomplishment in that park.
crazylarry
Gamel as a player is a JOKE. They aren’t winning anything. Too afraid to spend any $$ and give up a decent prospect for an old Pomerania? What a head scratcher.
ballnglove
I partially disagree, Gamel has been a very nice 4th outfielder this year. They did spend a club record amount of money this year, but of course not on pitching. And yes, that Dubon trade is garbage.
notagiantsfan
Yeah, yeah Dubon is a stud. He’s Jeff Kent 2.0. He’s the #3(??) prospect in a bad farm system, so the #10 prospect in an average farm system. And what the #15 prospect in a good farm system.?
I don’t think the Brewers got great talent in return for Dubon, but I’m not sold they gave away a lot either
Gobbysteiner
Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not but Jeff Kent 2.0? What lmfao
Cheeseman Forever
2020 Brewers will look much different. Moose, Thames, Grandal and Shaw deals all done. Some salary relief might help with a SP signing but some key positions to fill, and little in the pipeline.
Brian Luczak
Shaw is signed through 2021
brewcrew08
If the brewers keep their payroll around 125M like they did this year they will have money to spend. You free up 18M from Grandal, 10M from moose, can choose to decline Anderson’s 8.5M club option, chacin’s 6.75M is off the books, doubt you pick up Thames option so that clears 6M.
Stearns will have a lot of holes to fill but roughly 50+ million to do it. He will easily have the money to fill the holes we will have. Just a matter of if he makes the correct moves
jobusrum9
I don’t believe any of this after what we’ve seen happen.
Thames is now 1 of the least expenadable players on the team after trading Aguilar. There is no legit 1B prospects in this system.
Sure he could be replaced with a FA, but any FA that will outperform Thames is going to cost more then Thames will.
They’ve had the $28mil spent on Grandal and Moose free’d up for years and ha ent spent it on pitching.
Not bringing back Anderson would be almost as dumb as not bringing back Thames. They aren’t going to be able to get a SP for less money that outperforms Anderson.
The money they free up from Chacin will probably be spent on a catcher.
There really is no proof based on past moves that suggest this team will be any different or better next year.
brewcrew08
The 28M spent on Grandal/moose this year hasn’t been “freed up” for years. This is the highest their payroll has ever been. So Stearns was never given the ability to go to 125M until this year. If he’s given that ability again he will have at the minimum about 35M to spend.
I can see the argument to keep Thames and Anderson. If you do though 35M could easily net you at least 2 solid #2 at about 12-13M per season. Then re-sign moose at 2/22M. I personally would let Anderson walk and use that 8M for a backup catcher and relief arm. Then find an extra 3-4M to throw at a guy like Gio or Lyles to fill out the rotation.
Two free agent SP singings at the top, Woodruff, Davies and Lyles/Gio/Faria would be the best rotation the brewers have had in a while as sad as it is to admit
Tim Newport
I think it may be a good idea to wait and see how the Dubon trade works out. The Brewers have traded a boatload of prospects since Sterns took over…trades for Yelich, Moose and any number of rental relief pitchers. I can’t think of a one who has become a successful big leaguer.
And except for Stronan & Greinke, none of the top starters we’ve been reading about for weeks were moved. The potential sellers had become so convinced that they would break the bank in a trade that the Brewers’ meager prospect list had no chance of bringing back any more quality than they got.
