Dodgers Designate Zac Rosscup

By Jeff Todd | July 15, 2019 at 3:25pm CDT

The Dodgers have designated lefty Zac Rosscup for assignment, per a club announcement. Taking his active roster spot is fellow reliever Casey Sadler. The swap clears a 40-man opening for the Los Angeles org.

Rosscup, 31, has traveled far and wide over the past several seasons. This year alone, he has appeared in the majors with three clubs. While he’s getting loads of swinging strikes, Rosscup is walking batters with alarming frequency (19 in 18 innings).

Sadler was added in a recent swap with the Rays that followed his own DFA. He has only made two appearances with the Dodgers’ top affiliate, allowing four earned runs in six innings but compiling nine strikeouts against one walk in that stretch.

Immaculate inning is the only thing this guy has done in his entire career. Still better than anyone on this website

A LOOGY who can’t retire left-hand hitters….or not too many others either. Never could figure out why Dodgers brought him back what with their bullpen issues.

The walk last night was one of the saddest things I’ve seen all year. You could see in his face, afterward in the dugout, that he no longer believed in himself. No one spoke to him then, or afterwards in the locker room. And he knew what they knew, that he didn’t belong.

What reason did he ever have to believe in himself? The amazing thing is the Dodgers believed in him. Twice.

That’s pretty rough. Rosscup has had good stretches where he has gotten Major League hitters out. Is he worthy of a spot now? Probably not. But questioning why the guy should have ever believed in himself is ridiculous. He’s a pro baseballer.

I thought I was actually being quite charitable. This is a guy with a career WHIP of close to 1.7, 1.6 HR/9 and SO/W of 2.0. You might be tempted to go to FIP for somebody who had to pitch in some tough places but you won’t find much redemption there either (4.75). A couple of short stretches of serviceability don’t compensate for many years of being not good.

Maybe this is the lefty reliever the Cubs need. Bring back a piece from their 2016 championship run. They can trade Ian Crapp straight up for Rosscup.
