Trade Notes & Rumors: Padres, Jays, Chang

By Anthony Franco | July 28, 2019 at 12:10pm CDT

While Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler and Trevor Bauer may be dominating the headlines, numerous under-the-radar names are also being bandied about as the trade deadline approaches. We’ll round up a few here.

  • Unsurprisingly, the Padres have been getting calls on some of their top prospects. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports interest in infielder Luis Urias among teams who believe he can be a capable everyday shortstop. Urias has continued to play predominantly shortstop in the minors, but the position is obviously filled in Petco for the forseeable future by Fernando Tatis, Jr. Most public outlets believe second base to be a better fit for Urias regardless, but there’s little concern he can’t handle the increased offensive demands of the keystone. The 22 year-old is laying waste to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League and is a consensus top-50 prospect. While not necessarily related to any interest in Urias, Rosenthal further notes the Friars have been on the lookout for a left-handed bat to help balance their lineup.
  • Urias isn’t the only San Diego high-minors farmhand piquing interest. Amidst speculation about a three-team Syndergaard, Marcus Stroman trade, the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee tweets the Blue Jays have interest in Padres’ left-hander Adrian Morejon. The 20 year-old was a high-profile Cuban signee as an amateur and has flown through the minors. While he’s not likely a future ace and has a bit of a spotty injury history, Fangraphs’ Eric Longehagen and Kiley McDaniel note that Morejon’s stuff and command give him a chance to be a mid-rotation starter.
  • Speaking of the Jays, Rosenthal reports interest on an under-the-radar relief option. In addition to the commonly-speculated Ken Giles and Daniel Hudson, Rosenthal notes there have been some calls on right-hander Joe Biagini. The 29 year-old has a 3.42 ERA, 23.9% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate in 47 relief appearances. While he won’t be anyone’s headline acquisition, he also comes with three years of team control beyond this season at likely affordable rates.
  • The Padres aren’t the only team with a high-minors prospect sparking leaguewide demand. Cleveland infielder Yu Chang is drawing some calls, per Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com. Soon to turn 24, the Taiwnese infielder is a bat-first prospect who made his MLB debut this season but could have a hard time breaking into a loaded left side of the Cleveland infield. He’s slashing a solid, if unspectacular .273/.344/.448 this season in Triple-A.

Yeah because their old way has really worked for over 20 plus years
They are the perfect fit for Thor
Gives them a 2 year window possibly more if they can get him to an extension
      Garret Richards comes back
      Gore is on his way

Stroman is a perfect fit for the Mets he is from LI
And that’s closer to Queens than the Bronx and he would be stepping into the numberv2 behind DeGrom where he would be an ACE for the Yankees
Cespedas & Wright’s money are coming off the books so give the local kid an extension

      Greinke perfect fit for Braves

      Boyd perfect fit for Astros

      Ray perfect fit for Yankees

Let’s get this damn deadline pippin already !!!!

The Padres aren’t still operating their “old way.”

If Thor were willing to do an extension NYM wouldn’t trade him. They would be the ones that extend him.

There is zero reason to trade Thor and then trade for Stroman who has less upside and less club control.

Mets wanna move Thor because he is a problem
          He refused an MRI
He has been publicly critical of Ramos
He was away from his team on a Sunday night game because Gsme of Thrones was on
He says he doesn’t care he goes out there with the intention of throwing the ball as hard as he can
He has consistently came out in spring training and has thrown 100 mph when its unnecessary and risking injury
I think they are just tired of the drama that comes with him

Wondering if you have links to someone saying that Syndergaard has been a problem, because a search of this site didn’t show any, I could not find any on The Athletic or the NY Post, and nothing on MLB.com.

The team can demand that he take an MRI. Its in the contract every player signs. He can refuse treatment, but not an MRI, x-ray or any kind of non-invasive testing. Seems to me that is a dysfunctional team and management, not a problem with the player.

deGrom was also publicly critical of Ramos and has refused to pitch to him. That sounds more like a dysfunctional management.

          “Do something right for once”?
          Shields for Tatis?
Have you seen his last few drafts?
          International signings?
Have you seen the Farm system?
          Is Machado no good?

Trading Urias just opens up a hole at 2nd base and reminds me too much of trading Rizzo 8 years ago.

im still skeptical Urias can bat in the majors. i know he’s young and has played little in the majors, but he’s looked pitiful whenever he has been up.

7 walks in 7 games. Averaged 91.6 MPH on balls in play since his call back up. What he has looked is unlucky. He has hit the ball hard but right at people.

Padres are ran by fools. they over paid for Machado, Hosmer, and Meyers. Now talking about trading prospects when they are not even close to being a playoff team. Sorry but the Padres should wait it out and build a playoff team not trade away assets to be a .500 team.

That’s the point. Getting out of the myers/kinsler money, taking on the cano money and getting a lefty bat with pop and a proven mlb commodity for a few years at 2B.
I don’t have the specifics on Cano remaining contract, so if you want to poopoo this idea you should post that. I believe its less overall owed than Meyers.

Cano no way don’t need that at all, but maybe Thor and a top 50 prospect for those four, BTW we’d have to pay 60% of Myers salary and that would be worth it

Chang will NOT have a hard time breaking into Tribe infield. Kipnis will depart and he could go right to 2B or 3B and Ramirez slides over to his more natural position of 2B.

After today’s Gausman debacle no doubt Braves will be going after BOTH a starter and reliever. No way they can go very far with 2 newbies and questionables after them. AA HAS to do something. I’d love Grienke. Take on the full remainder of his contract means less a prospect they’d have to give up (aka meaning pache, waters, Anderson, Wright). Maybe Wilson and Davidson for Grienke should do it

Biagini and Phelps didn’t help themselves today. Giles didn’t even touch the mound in TBay’s comeback win which should be a concern for every GM needing a reliever. The Jays are protecting him.

Bauer didn’t lose his composure at all today. That wasn’t a good look.
