Mariners Reinstate Dee Gordon, Option Court

By Dylan A. Chase | August 10, 2019 at 5:39pm CDT

Infielder Dee Gordon is back in the lineup for Seattle this evening, following the team’s announcement of his activation from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, utilityman Ryan Court has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

It’s been a season to forget for GM Jerry Dipoto’s “reimagined” Seattle crew, with the northwestern outfit limping to a 48-69 record entering play Saturday. As such, it’s difficult to see the Mariners having much to gain from the reinstallation of the 31-year-old Gordon, who, in this phase of his career, offers little aside from a light bat and some still-flight feet. The second baseman, who has been sidelined since July 22nd with a left quad strain, has hit .280/.306/.367 (81 wRC+) in 2019, his second season with Seattle. It is worth noting that a good late-season showing from Gordon could, in theory, help DiPoto’s chances of offloading the veteran in the offseason; Gordon will make $13.5MM in 2020, the last guaranteed season of a 5-year/$50MM deal signed in 2016 with the Miami Marlins.

Court’s initiatory stint in the big leagues granted him just 18 at-bats with Seattle. The 31-year-old has amassed over 3000 at-bats at the minor league level and is a career .275/.366/.430 hitter within the developmental ranks.

It’s hard to imagine Gordon having a great deal of trade value now. An aging speedster with very little power will need tough to unload.

If the Mariners eat $5M+ of the contract, they will find a team willing to take on a veteran with a solid track record. I know the salary isn’t comparable, but if guys like Terrace Gore and Jarred Dyson can survive in the league, so can Dee Gordon.

I would bet it would take more than $5M to move him.

Gore is making 600K and Dyson is making 3.7M. SEA would have to eat more than $5M to ship out Gordon. $8-10M is more likely

Dee Gordon plays three key defensive positions well, has excellent speed and still gets on base enough to play on anyone’s top of the order. If someone took on Robinson Cano’s contract, someone will take Gordon’s. IMO, If Gordon can’t be moved, he, along with Kyle Seager, are players the M’s should keep.

He’s a plus 2nd basemen, and that’s where it stops. He’s not a good SS or CF. He does not get on base enough to hit at the top of any lineup. He does not run as he used to. 2nd has become an offensive position, and the major issue is that Gordon just does not get on base enough or pose any power threat. The Ms offloaded Cano, because Diaz was attached, and similar salaried exchanged. Gordon overall is a comp player who may see faint interest if significant money is eaten or swapped, but it’s generally tough to find fits.

15 of the Mariners too 30 prospects are all at AA-Arkansas. No other minor league team has as much talent. 2021 is just around the corner. Go M’s.

Wow! That’s great to know. So happy for the M’s. Really hopping they can turn it around and soon. Lots of money coming off the books by 2021 too!

Court hit very well at AAA for the Cubs, a year ago. I saw him in spring training that year also, I believe he is a capable MLB back up.

All Ryan Court did was make a great catch RF and hit a HR to get sent back down.

What a dumb statement. The Reimagined team was never supposed to compete this year. The beginning of the year was fun but nobody elected it to last. This year was about cleaning up the high priced vets and trading the pieces we had to get younger. We succeeded in that for the most part. If they want to move Gordon they could probably move him with Santana and not eat as much salary. We have an abundance of OFers some will need to be moved at some point. I know not all work out but there is a lot of talent in the minors. They should have a good idea who will more t than likely make it.

      Hit post on accident.

Anyway there are ways to move Gordon I don’t think it is a huge need though. He is a great locker room guy and a help for the younger players. I doubt they just release him. Might as well keep him there to be the leader takes a roster spot but can be a utility guy. The Reimagined team is in 2021 all the people that have paid attention know that. Next year shouldn’t be as bad but could still be a bit ugly. The Astros are still in the ALW. Sorry Angel fans but your hate for Dipoto is funny because he had done great here. Maybe that was the plan to destroy your team and build up Seattle after. Lol I know it wasn’t but maybe give the complainers a new conspiracy theory.

Don’t get our at all. Do you have anything intelligent to add or just errors trying to be funny? If you meant out no I actually don’t I am disabled because of injuries I got playing FB in college. I can’t drive and need help from others. Thanks for asking hope that makes you feel better. Had 4 surgeries and multiple other procedures and just got worse after each one.

Reinstate seems misleading… it should probably say activate in the title, yeah?
