The White Sox announced today that they have purchased the contract of lefty Hector Santiago. He’ll take the 40-man spot of fellow southpaw swingman Manny Banuelos, who was moved to the 60-day IL to make way.
In other news, backstop Welington Castillo was reinstated from the family medical emergency leave list. He’ll technically serve as the 26th man in today’s doubleheader, meaning that the team will have to make a further active roster move thereafter.
Santiago, 31, is in his third stint with the Chicago organization. He opened his career on the South Side and also pitched there last year. Santiago struggled in a brief MLB stint earlier this year with the Mets. In eighty total frames at Triple-A in 2019, he carries a 4.50 ERA with 71 strikeouts and 32 walks.

If they keep him up, they need to send Detwiler packing.
But they probably won’t. They are really just throwing rusty darts at this point, when they have new darts to use.
The Baseball Fan (Doesn’t like the White Sox)
Typical Sox move. Santiago should be playing for the Long Island Ducks but found his way back to the only team with a bleaker outlook.
Rallyshirt
Funny how so many posters try and use video game logic to substitute actual business of baseball. Look around the league, countless young and older players, even some managers, turning into a bunch of embarrassing crybabies. That’s not White Sox baseball.
maximumvelocity
The White Sox are in the entertainment business.
They have not had a winning season since 2012, and demand fans watch an inferior, less interesting product over financial consideration in 2025, instead of investing in necessary prospect development at ML level and maximizing value of existing assets.
That is bad business, and nothing worth promoting.
Rallyshirt
There’s not a single person who is not ecstatic about the future players on this ballclub. Luis Robert is destroying everything they throw at him. Madrigal has like 8 strikeouts in 300 ab. Moncada, Anderson, Garcia, Eloy, Giolito, Rodon, Bummer, Kopech, McCann, Marshall. These guys aren’t coming in next year with a we’ll just see what happens, hope for the best attitude. These guys are not boys jumping around and saying “Let’s go!” all the time like your average college game. These guys are mature enough to play the game as it’s supposed to be played. A character and mission required in a gentleman’s game. It takes time to find the right ones, and the ones who can grow into the player they are supposed to be. The WSox do that, and that’s why they are respected by those who know. Everyone else is looking for pump ups and dopamine hits. WSox want fun and professional, not immature rich brats.
Seriously, it’s worse out there than I’ve ever seen before.
maximumvelocity
Huh?
GareBear
I just imagine you burning all of your White Sox gear if they had signed Machado
Aaron Sapoznik
The White Sox don’t have any new darts in their collection of starting pitcher prospects who are MLB ready. They also have 3 SP’s who are still rehabbing from TJ surgery and won’t be available until some time next season in Carlos Rodon, Michael Kopech and Dane Dunning, the latter of whom will still need some AAA experience before reaching the southside of Chicago.
Clearly the White Sox will be in the market for at least one veteran starter this offseason to help anchor an opening day rotation that looks to feature younger right-handed power arms in Lucas Giolito, Dylan Cease, Reynaldo Lopez and Kopech. A southpaw might be a priority with Rodon likely out at least until the latter half of 2020. Mark Buehrle “clone” Dallas Keuchel might be a realistic get for the White Sox since he won’t command the years or dollars that Gerrit Cole will receive. Keuchel will also be free of the qualifying offer that stymied his free agency this past winter.
Dogbone
Gerritt Cole, lol. Why in the world would he sign with Sox
Idioms for Idiots
Thumbs up from me again. Keep up that great wit of yours.
greatgame 2
Sign tough luck starter Chris Volstad with his xFIP of 4.30 for less than $1M. Better than Detwiler or Covey
maximumvelocity
I agree with everything you are saying, but would rather see the team take a shot with Kyle Kubat in the rotation. The reluctance to call up older but interesting prospects like Kubat, Mercedes, and Mendick makes no sense.
John Kappel
Go sign Ryu. He’s a FA after the season.

I’m interested in this 26th man status. IIRC, there was an issue if a designated 26th man got injured during his tenure, whether he was placed on the major or minor league IL. Does anyone know for sure the disposition of this?
H3ads40T73
The problem for Reed, though, is that because he was not technically on the 25-man roster as the 26th man in a doubleheader, he’ll recover from that injury on the minor league injured list rather than the Major League injured list. Logic would seemingly dictate that a player injured while performing in a Major League game would rehab that injury while receiving the benefits of the MLB IL — that is, service time and MLB pay. That won’t be the case for Reed or future players who are injured while serving as the 26th man, though.
H3ads40T73
An excerpt from the article written by Steve about Cody Reed
jorge78
He goes on the minor league IL. No major league service time while on the minor league injured list.
An anti-player loophole…..
soxx44
Time to DFA Castillo when this doubleheader is over.
Dogbone
Yep I agree, call up Collins the catcher of the future, hahaha.
Doback78
Collins would be a better option than Contreras at this point. Hopefully Contreras can get healthy in the next THIRTY days or so. So unfortunate
Idioms for Idiots
HOHOHOHO, that was rich with hilarity. I almost wet my pants laughing at that one. You are awesome, sonny boy.
Again, my thumbs up, Dogbone.
Doback78
Unfortunately he makes too much money. I think that’s the reason anyway. Same for Herrera ugh
TwinsRPennyPincherz
Castillo should be designated and replaced with Lucroy. If Lucroy makes a comeback with Chicago they could flip him for some prospects in the offseason or next season.
Aaron Sapoznik
Do you seriously believe that the struggling White Sox would exchange one over-the-hill veteran catcher for another just to finish out the 2019 season?
The only way Jonathan Lucroy joins the White Sox is if they claim him off of waivers which would make them responsible for his remaining prorated 2019 salary of $3.35M. If Lucroy clears waivers then he will be free to sign with any club and the non-contending White Sox certainly wouldn’t figure to be high on his wish list, especially with the Cubs in desperate need of a catcher to pair with Victor Caratini in the wake of the Willson Contreras injury.
Why would the White Sox want to take on the Lucroy contract along with Wellington Castillo’s remaining prorated amount of $7.25M (+ his $500k 2020 option buyout) which would be the result of them DFA’ing and releasing the latter?
Zack Collins would be recalled in the wake of a Castillo DFA with AAA catchers Seby Zavala and Yermin Mercedes potential candidates for a September promotion when rosters expand.
ChiSox_Fan
Collins is Sox backup 1B/DH of the future.
cwsOverhaul
Gavin Sheets is a better hitter…..but both he and Collins are very conceivable trade bait.
John Kappel
Sheets is not a better hitter. If he was, he’d be in triple A.
cwsOverhaul
Sheets was drafted a year after Collins. He should begin 2020 as the 1B in AAA if they don’t promote him late this year, with Vaughn taking his current 1B spot in AA early 2020.
Dogbone
This should really help out, tanking. This being the 7th year of the Sox rebuild. Although it looks like it’s possible for them to win 70 games this season.
Pretty soon the players involved in this rebuild farce, will be free agents. Good work Reinsdork, I love it.
GoSoxGo
The promotion of Hector Santiago is a sure sign that the rebuild has still a long way to go. After years of restocking the farm system with prospects, the Sox have so failed to develop starting pitching that the are left to sign one re-tread after another. Does anyone think Hector Santiago will help this team? Any more than Santana did? Any more than Detwiler has? It’s worth noting that while the Sox continue the hype about their rebuild, teams like Minnesota and Atlanta have succeeded where the Sox have yet to do so. Will the Sox “compete” in 2020? It’s hard to see how? You have to have faith, first of all, that Rodon and Kopech will recover fully from their injuries, and that, further, they will actually pitch effectively. You have to have faith that Cease will stop getting pounded. You have to have faith that Jimenez will prove that he can hit, not just that he can hit a few homers in an age when everybody hits homers. You have to have faith that some prospects make it to the bigs and perform well enough to justify at least some of the over-the-top hype. That’s calling for a lot of faith. Nothing the Sox have done to date inspires much hope. And it’s worth remembering that other teams are not sitting still, waiting for the Sox to catch up.
Rallyshirt
Not having any faith in 2020 is still a high probability of making the playoffs on the cheap with studs galore.
Idioms for Idiots
That was comedy at it’s best Dogbone. 7th year of the Sox rebuild. Keep that wit going.
Yup, my thumbs up again.
How do you do it, Dogbone? Such spot on analysis, coming from a 15-year-old of all people. You are way ahead of your time.
My apologies if I didn’t give a thumbs up to all your posts, but I think I got them all. Keep up the great work, sonny boy.

Is he still gonna wear that jersey?

I’m kind of new to all this but is it always this way? Immature Cub fans trolling White Sox comment sections? So lame. Kind of ruins it for everyone but no one cares anymore about things like that anymore I suppose. Crazy cause most of the Cub trolls I see on here aren’t very intelligent baseball fans judging by what they post. Do White Sox fans do the same to Cub sites? Also lame if that is the case. It would be too much to ask to be able to chat with other people about the great game of baseball online
ChiSox_Fan
Yes, unfortunately that’s the case.
Lonely trolling little Cubbie fans hoping to hang their flag.
The Baseball Fan (Doesn’t like the White Sox)
@Doback78
Some commenter such as ChiSox_Fan, ChiSoxCity, chitown311, and others spend most of their time commenting on cubs comment sections. It seems that it goes both ways, probably disproportionately skewed more towards the cubs threads than Sox threads.
ChiSoxCity
We do it in response to the constantly trolling for cubs fans.
Trying to talk baseball with cubs fans is impossible. They’re so emotionally invested in the team that they have zero objectivity. Everything is personal, regardless of what you say.
I don’t hate the cubs, but I have low tolerance for racism, elitism and ignorance. They resort to “isms” immediately when they see anything related to the White Sox in your screen name.
chicagofan1978
This happens on Cubs stories too. Posters like Chisox_fan and chi town 311 or whatever do it all the time. I think it’s the same guy cause they both do some stupid k reply when they have nothing to say and want to be noticed. It’s a shame, I am a Sox fan and they are flat out embarrassing. Then there is some cubs fan named bryzzo or something that always types paragraphs and paragraphsto berate the Sox. Other teams fans just giggle at how childish they are
ChiSoxCity
All you do is apologize for Sox fans. Your posts are completely useless.
chicagofan1978
Coming from you that’s funny cause you’re literally one of the worst commenters. You add nothing and think this is your Facebook page
John Kappel
ChiSoxCity, as a White Sox season ticket holder, you make all of us look bad.
chicagofan1978
It’s funny cause I came here for intelligent conversations about baseball and I get the exact same thing I see on Facebook and Twitter. I am a Sox fan and have been my whole life. But I watch baseball all the time and love talking about it. But I have to scroll through the crap comments all the time.

Good God…why?

I like most CWS fans would much rather see a Collins finishing out the year then Castillo. Even if you believe that service time is an issue at least bring up Mercedes and let the 26 year old play.
chicagofan1978
Anyone but Castillo is fine with me
Polish Hammer
Budget must be pretty bad there, customizing the jerseys with paper and tape to hold it on.
Paulie0514
Why would anyone listen to anything you say? The beginning of your name implies you couldn’t possibly have anything intelligent to say.
Polish Hammer
And yours implies that 8 year old whining until grandpa buys you that slushee to shut you up followed by what you’d score on the SATs if they didn’t round off the numbers.

And the end of the name implies what happens to chumps that make racial/ethnic slurs…

I have said since the beginning of the year Castillo is worthless.
Dogbone
But Castillo is better both with the bat and glove, than K. Collins.
Idioms for Idiots
Dogbone, with your incredible wit and your astute observations, you should write for one of the major websites. Well, at least once you turn 18, but that’s a few years away. Something for you to consider, sonny boy. I would recommend, though, that it isn’t one with message boards…just trust me on that one LOL.
Oh, and that was me that gave you the thumbs up. Of course that wasn’t out of sarcasm (wink, wink). Keep up the great work, sonny boy LOL
In fact, now that I thought about it, I might just give you a thumbs up on every post you make from here on out. LOL
Idioms for Idiots
You can tell the 3-year rebuild is about over based on the trolls like Dogbone and Bochepus, (oops, now it’s chicubs_city) nitpicking over meaningless 26th-man choices, among other things, by the Sox. These trolls know they don’t have much time left before the Sox compete, so they have to get their last licks in before it’s over for them.
Amazing they worry so much about a team that right now has absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the Cubs season. Well, unless the Cubs miss the playoffs by one or two games, otherwise the Sox have no bearing on the Cubs outcome.
That’s hilarious that a team currently 11 games below .500, that lost almost 200 games the 2 seasons before this one, still garners so much attention from Cub trolls on these message boards. You might want to focus a little more on the Brewers, Cards, Nats, and Philly…you know, the teams that could knock you out of post-season play, and less on a team that should be irrelevant to you, but obviously isn’t based on your constant trolling.
It certainly would be a shame for you trolls, while dancing on our grave, to miss the playoffs completely, especially being right in the middle of your window of opportunity. That would certainly be a nice big bowl of justice for you trolls to have to choke down all Winter.
I’m not hoping the Cubs choke down the stretch, because I know many classy smart Cub fans, but it certainly won’t stop me from laughing at you trolls, especially you, Dogbone and Bocephus, I mean chicubs_city.
Rallyshirt
I like Hector, the team likes him, and let’s not forget that roaring lion tattoo on his arm. That is some quality ink.
Idioms for Idiots
OK, now that I got all that out of my system (sorry, rough day at work). I wouldn’t read a lot into making Santiago the 26th man for tonight’s game. It’s not like anything hangs in the balance for either the Sox or Tigers. Neither team has any prayer of even reaching .500, let alone a WC spot. So, who cares if they bring up a dumpster dive for game 2 of a meaningless DH.
So take it for what it is. At this point, it’s pretty much auditioning for next year and beyond, because this year is it for the rebuild. And, no, I’m not talking about Santiago auditioning for next year.
basquiat
Kudos to the White Sox. Baseball needs a pitcher who throws a screwball.
Polish Hammer
Too much strain on the arm to throw that pitch.
Prunella Vulgaris
Mr. Cooper likes Santiago.
