Yankees Outright Jake Barrett, Tyler Lyons

By Jeff Todd | November 4, 2019 at 2:40pm CDT

The Yankees have outrighted righty Jake Barrett and lefty Tyler Lyons, per the club. Lyons has rejected the assignment in favor of free agency.

Barrett, 28, will evidently remain with the New York organization for the time being. He only made two MLB appearances after being claimed but showed quite a bit of promise in 15 1/3 Triple-A innings. He has had little trouble dominating batters in the upper minors in recent years, but hasn’t consistently recorded outs in the bigs and spent much of the 2019 campaign on ice owing to elbow issues.

As for Lyons, he did compile an eyebrow-raising 12:2 K/BB ratio in 8 2/3 innings in New York. He also coughed up three long balls in that sample and has generally struggled in limited opportunities over the past two seasons.

Lyons, 31, had projected to earn $800K in arbitration. Trimming him from the roster will knock out that potential payout. But the Yankees decided not to move first baseman Greg Bird off of the 40-man today. He projects to earn $1.3MM after another forgettable campaign. Whether or not he’ll be tendered — and, if so, remain with the Yanks — remains to be seen, but is still an open possibility.

I know this is *super* early but when do we know when players are invited to Spring Training? Curious about Trevor Rosenthal’s chance of redeeming himself in the Yankees system.

I think that there isn’t a set date. You just have to look for the Spring Training rosters.

Selling low almost never works out. Same goes for Anduljar. Neither of them have mega contracts.

Right? No point in just dumping Bird. Leave him in AAA and he harms you none. And its not like anyone would trade anything for him that would make the Yankees better off at this point. He is good for depth at this point under an unfortunate circumstance that Voit and Ford get hurt

I can’t make any excuses about Bird being injured, but if the Yanks non-tender him, he’ll be signed in 5 minutes by another team. I’d really like to see him stay healthy for an entire season to see what he could do with that lefty swing.

I agree. He has a sweet swing, 30+ home potential “if he can stay healthy.” One more shot.

Where’s he going to play ? You have Voit, Andujar, and Ford, and if Didi re-signs, DJ as well…

I’m assuming Didi is a goner. Gio at 3B, Torres at SS, DJ at 2B, Voit/Ford/Anduljar at 1B/DH. The Yankees still need a backup middle infielder and Jedd Gyorko would be my pick if he’ll take a bench role.

There’s no reason to trade any of these guys since they’re making peanuts relatively.

          @costergaard2

Assuming he’s still with the Yanks, AAA I would hope. Yanks have Voit and DJ, if needed. But it wouldn’t make sense to release him. I think we released/traded away a couple of our 1B AAA guys. He needs extended period of AB to try and fix himself, assuming he can ever get past the trainers room.

I’m gambling that he Yanks bring Didi back. Coming off of a TJ he deserves a mulligan. Cashman mentioned after the announcement of his surgery that he still wanted to extend Didi. Not sure why it didn’t happen but if that were his thoughts after learning of his need for TJ then the results of his half season shouldn’t be a deterrent. This team is at it’s best when you can afford to move DJ around the infield. Cashman can’t afford to not have the same kind of depth we had this year.

@southbeach- so why does it have to be didi? I don’t disagree with the flexibility/depth position you take. Makes sense. I just don’t get why it has to be didi. He plays one position, and is a core member of the yanks DBS/Homer or Bust guy.

Per the Davis article in the NYdailynews “Gregorius…hit .238/.276/.441 with 16 home runs across 82 games. His wRC+ was an 84 (100 being average), meaning his offensive production 16% worse than the league after adjusting for the homer-happy league and his home ballpark.”

Why risk it and be so quick to attribute it to TJ (yes its a serious injury)

If cash moves on from him and signs another DJ type guy its a positive step forward….Going the same failed route just perpetuates the def of insanity here.

This was Didi’s first really bad year offensively since the first half 2015 and it was due to coming off a major injury and not having a spring training. Labeling him a HR or bust guy off his 2019 numbers is a mistake, looking at his 2016-2018 numbers is a better way to approach what type of player he is. He is also a solid defender, regardless of what advanced metrics might say.

beg- i hear you. But usually in October he is quite deficient. The Yanks have some depth and skill around the diamond. I would prefer a contact hitting utility guy over him. especially if it runs 15 mil a year plus. The team has other more important areas to address.

Not giving him a QO was the genius’ second best move in a long time after DJ…..

Bird must be the greatest .211 lifetime batting average hitter in the history of baseball. Wait, this just in: He stinks!

Now, let me tell you how about the great Sam Travis. He stinks, too.

Perhaps MLBTR will get around to acknowledging that the Yankees didn’t offer a QO to Didi Gregorius.
