Rangers Acquire Adolis Garcia

By George Miller | December 21, 2019 at 2:59pm CDT

The Rangers have acquired outfielder Adolis García from the Cardinals, per an official team release. Texas will send cash considerations back the other way in the deal. Right-hander Jimmy Herget was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the Rangers’ 40-man roster.

The Cardinals designated García for assignment on Wednesday to make room for Kwang-Hyun Kim. His Cardinals stint ends after making just 17 plate appearance with the Major League club. The 26-year-old outfielder signed a free agent prior to 2017, having played professionally in Cuba and Japan since 2011.

García spent the entire 2019 season at Triple-A, posting a .253/.301/.517 batting line with 32 home runs. Skeptics would advise to take those numbers with a grain of salt, given the hitter-friendly environment in the Pacific Coast League (not to mention the “juiced” ball that was introduced to the Triple-A ranks in 2019). He’s been strikeout-prone throughout his professional career, but his impactful power, above-average speed and strong throwing arm mean that he could have a chance to get big-league playing time as a reserve outfielder. And with Delino Deshields Jr. out of the mix, García has a path to the Majors with Texas, though future additions may impede that path.

Herget, meanwhile, lasted just about three weeks on the Rangers’ 40-man, having been claimed on December 2 this winter. The 26-year-old righty made his Major League debut last year with the Reds after posting solid numbers in Triple-A, where he struck out 68 batters and posted a 2.91 ERA in 58 2/3 innings. The Rangers will have a week to make a decision on Herget, who can be traded, released, or outrighted to the minors.

Clearly the final piece we were missing to send in our package for Arenado. (jk)

Some think he’s tapped out, others think he has untapped potential. Will be interesting to see who is right.

Arenado has been frustrated that the Rockies haven’t been aggressive making themselves a better team. He has an opt out in 2021 I believe. Or is it 2022?

        • Wrek305

He shouldn’t have signed the extension then. That’s his own fault. The Rangers probably wont contend with the astros and A’s in their division.

        • myaccount

Wrek– okay, it’s his fault, sure. That doesn’t mean he isn’t getting traded. He might not be, but Colorado is taking offers.

Brad Hand got 35mil over 4 years. That’s easier to move than 260mil and 195mil left. And if the Rangers take on his contract basically giving up scraps because their farm is bare. They’ll be at least 15mil over the tax threshold. more power to them. I feel sorry for Nolan Arenado. Great player but the only thing he’ll ever win is gold gloves

How so Iisted facts. I might have had the $$$ money figures wrong. the point was it’s easier to pay a salary over 45mil instead of over 200 mil.

Better than the NL East even with Miami? Texas and the Angels should be improved but Seattle? Take the bottom teams out and I’d argue Washington, NY, Philly and of course Altlanta are collectively at least as good as the top four in the West.

Santana can’t play third. He’s really not very good defensively. His best positions are LF, RF, or second base. He’s below average everywhere else. He’s awful at SS & 3B.

I’m hoping Texas brings in a coach who can help him improve. They’re going to use him all over the field. He needs to get better defensively. I’ll be very surprised if he’s the everyday Center fielder.

If he can find a way to make consistent enough contact I think he could develop into a pretty solid player. He’s obviously got some serious power and decent speed that along with being able to play all 3 OF positions and he could turn into a valuable guy to have around.

Odds Herget winds up back in Cincy?

    Reply
    • Trog

He has to be put on a 40 man roster if claimed. Texas is trying to sneak him through waivers to get him to AAA. Cincy already has a full 40, so if they claim, someone else has to go. I’d put greater stock in the Nationals, as they have several open 40 spots and need pen depth.

When commenters have no facts to back up their comment they always try to deflect with things like “don’t you know sarcasm”
          Or “can’t you recognize humor”

If you don’t have any substance to add to the story don’t comment. If you’re so lonely to make random comments here for social interaction, get a dog or gym membership.

I’ve seen this guy play multiple times in memphis, hes not fast but hes still good defensively. Has an absolute canon arm. He strikes out a bunch, but when he makes contact, the ball is scorched. Hes in great physical shape and was always willing to sign autographs and was always smiling. Hope he can fix those holes in his swing and get a real chance. Seems like a good dude. Might be a good find for texas. Was hoping he might take ozunas spot.

Another Cardinal blunder!!! Garcia never got an honest chance in St. Louis. I’m glad he’s going somewhere else to play!! The Cardinals Front Office and Ownership play only their highest paid players. No matter if there are much better and younger and cheaper players sitting right there on the bench who are more talented and productive. Tommy Edman and Garcia are much better than Matt Carpenter and Dexter Fowler!!!!
