Rangers Showing Interest In Todd Frazier

By Jeff Todd | December 31, 2019 at 1:56pm CDT

The Rangers are showing interest in veteran infielder Todd Frazier, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. It seems the team would be amenable to a single-season pact; the potential price tag isn’t known.

Frazier, 34 in February, has generally turned in above-average hitting and solid glovework at the hot corner. His power has taken a step back from his All-Star caliber days, but Frazier is still a solid veteran performer. Last year, he slashed .251/.329/.443 and popped 21 long balls in 499 plate appearances with the Mets.

While the Rangers still have their eyes on a bigger prize at third base — after missing on Anthony Rendon, they’re making a long-odds play for Nolan Arenado — it seems they could pursue Frazier regardless. Per Grant, Frazier would move into action at first base in the event of another addition at third. He’d pair with (and at least partially displace) Ronald Guzman at first while presumably also seeing action at third, as a DH, and as a pinch-hitter.

It’s a sensible match on paper, though it’s not clear how likely it is to come to fruition. Frazier will presumably also be targeted by some other clubs that have designs on higher-end options at third base. Depending upon where Josh Donaldson signs and how the trade market develops over the coming weeks — the true availability of Arenado and Kris Bryant will weigh heavily — it’s possible that Frazier will end up in some demand before camp opens. There are a number of other notable veteran options still on the market, though arguably none as desirable as Frazier.

I guess you didn’t actually read the part that said “While the Rangers still have their eyes on a bigger prize at third base…”

But it’s cool. It’s the last day of 2019, you’re allowed to be lazy and post ignorant comments.

I didnt know MLBTR speaks for the front office of the Rangers. If theyre showing interest in Frazier theyre possibly signaling that, no, they dont really have their eye on a bigger prize at third base.

Its still possible that they grab a better 3B than Frazier, sure, but not because MLBTR said they are still looking at better options. That part of the article comes off as more of an assumption of what the Rangers’ FO is doing than absolute fact, considering there are no quotes or links to other articles that provide evidence to such a claim.

No, not trolling. Duh, it was in the article. What i was saying was: how was the reader supposed to assume that the “While the Rangers still have eyes on a bigger prize at third base” was from the Grant article and not just an assumption on the part of MLBTR? The quote in question was one or two paragraphs removed from the original mention/summarization of the Grant article, with original work from Jeff Todd in between. I was also saying there should be no requirement/expectation from the reader to have read the linked Grant article, since it was summarized in the first paragraph.

I have read this article in full about 2-3 times (its not very long so that really shouldnt be impressive) but i have not read the Grant article. If the fact that the Rangers do have eyes on another 3B outside Frazier is true and it was indeed stated in the Grant article with proof that it is true, then I guess anyone who assumes that the Rangers are simply aiming to settle for Frazier is a bit at fault, but its not hard to see how someone can come to conclusion.

TL:DR, im just providing reasonings for why its not really hard to see where Mo4ever was coming from and why it was a bit uncalled for for thatdudetg to come off as he did.

Or..OR….the Ranger know how to walk and chew gum at the same time. Likely, they’ve submitted an offer to someone, free agent or not, and in case it falls thru they are checking the list for the alternative plans? This a rumor site. It’s part factual and speculative.

I don’t see anything wrong with what @thatdudetg said.

You’re right Grant isn’t the front office, but I’ll take a teams reporters speculation over that of a “reader/commentor” of MLBTR

They wouldn’t be looking at Frazier at all if he weren’t becoming a significant possibility. If they were determined to land a bigger fish, that’s where their focus would remain. IMO.

Every single team checks in on more than one free agent that plays the positions they are targeting and sets up multiple backup options of their primary goal doesn’t work out. In no way shape or form does this news mean the Rangers won’t make a move for a better third baseman. The Bryant grievance isn’t even decided yet.

I’m not sure about the Rangers, but thinking Frazier is any solution, is a big joke. He was washed up and creaky while still playing for the White Sox. He moved on defense like an old man with no agility. And I doubt his offensive numbers are going to get any better.
Rangers better start looking at getting their 3B solution via trade.

I have to agree with that possibility. He’s an asset, but not a solution, so lock him up on a deal like that as a hedge against coming up empty completely in the 3B sweepstakes. And if they do land a high end 3B, use him at 1B or off the bench.

So far no sign that any statement is going to be made. Fans should care. First (above) you were arguing that they are still going after the big names. Now you are just capitulating…

And he won’t come on a contract that will potentially cripple the organization.

Three of the Rangers’ top 10 prospects are fast-rising third basemen — college draftees Josh Jung (No. 1) and Davis Wendzel (No. 9) and 2018 trade acquisition Sherten Apostel (No. 10). Breaking the bank on third base makes little sense when you’ve got equal uncertainty at catcher and center field and fewer potential solutions internally.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a Yankees article or not, he is going grab the tangent or fabricate a tangent and drag the Yankees into it for a good, swift kick. Actually, my father couldn’t care less about the yankees baseball team. He was more concerned with defeating the Japanese in World War 2. His dad however, brought him to a baseball game to see Babe Ruth. He described him as comically fat with little spindly legs. But he was great, I’m sure.

Some Red Sox fan like him traded Babe Ruth away and the rest is history. btw, my dad was in WWII also but I don’t wear it like a personal badge of honor… After all, so did pretty much everyone else in that generation… Keep it in perspective.

Maybe a trade for a guy who crushes lefties to play at 1B to platoon with Guzman..
Like Renato Nunez from the Orioles or Brandon Dixon from the Orioles
They can both play 3B in a pinch too Incase Frazier gets injured or doesn’t hit worth a crap.. at that point they could put someone like Heineman in Center and let Santana play 1B vs lefties
