Cubs Acquire Casey Sadler

By Anthony Franco | January 17, 2020 at 2:35pm CDT

The Cubs have acquired right-hander Casey Sadler from the Dodgers, per team announcements. Minor league infielder Clayton Daniel is headed back to L.A. Sadler lost his spot on the Dodgers’ 40-man when the club signed Alex Wood. The Cubs’ 40-man roster now sits at 39.

Sadler, 29, pitched to a stellar 2.14 ERA in 46.1 innings between the Rays and Dodgers in 2019. As might be expected, his peripherals hardly supported that level of run prevention. A below-average 9.1% swinging strike rate and 16% strikeout rate contributed to a 4.38 FIP. To Sadler’s credit, he did limit walks and features elite spin on his fastball and curveball. Perhaps he’ll be able to overcome some likely regression in his BABIP allowed and strand rate if he can better actualize his raw stuff in Chicago. Sadler’s out of options, so he’ll have to stick on the Cubs’ active roster or else again be traded or exposed to waivers.

Daniel, 24, has reached Double-A, albeit briefly. In 501 professional plate appearances, mostly in the low minors, the Jacksonville State product has compiled a .290/.367/.379 line with nearly as many walks (52) as strikeouts (53). The former 31st-rounder has logged starts at second, short, and third base, with much of that work coming in the middle infield.

According to local Chicago media around the Cubs like David Kaplan, the Cubs still have to cut payroll. So I still think something will be done.

Looking at the various payroll websites it appears to be a couple million dollars. I don’t think they have to do anything major to get under the luxury tax but they probably can’t make any improvements at the deadline or sign anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are rolling out what they have right now.

Agreed. But that also doesn’t consider room for deadline trade moves. So now or then… any deal done in season would require financial room.

to be fair, he dug this hole. money spent on Heyward, Darvish, Descalso and others could all be well spent elsewhere. they let him spend in past offseasons and he blew it. would you, as an owner, let a guy who signed those contracts have free reign to sign more?

Facts. I don’t think he’s crying poor, but spending every year with middling results compared to dollars spent would probably turn me off from doing it annually hoping for a different result. Work with what you have. Meaning he’s going to have to be stingy, and creative.

Very true but missing out on guys like Claudio(who signed for less than 2m)? Can’t help but wonder if that was a miss on Theo’s part or a spending issue. I get not wanting to bring any big money deals in this off season, but there’s still plenty they could’ve done for relatively cheap.

Darvish contract is totally fine. 4/81 left and He was one of the better pitchers in baseball the second half and I fully expect a 4 war season barring injury. Lester is getting 20 mil as basically a 5th starter now but they signed him knowing the end of the contract wouldn’t be great value wise. Heyward is a bad contract for sure, too many groundballs and iffb. They need quintana to pitch like he did for the White Sox . This is still an excellent team that really just lacks a bullpen. A bounce back from kimbrel would be huge.

Descalso is on a short term contract making a couple million bucks, he isn’t the problem. Most teams would probably just cut him after last year. The Darvish contract seems like decent value right now. Heyward is the black hole and chatwood hasn’t earned a fraction of his money but outside of that he’s done fine. The core is getting into serious arbitration dollars and it’s only going to get worse. They need to makes some tough decisions, period.

Chattwood has done fine? Are you serious? He was supposed to be in the starting rotation of a contending team. They have to play mind games with this guy to get him on the mound. Not only that, he can’t throw a strike if you put a gun to his head. Whatever Epstein saw in this guy, it was a gross overestimation.

I’m not so sure it comes from Rickets. They’ve spent money before. A lot. And they’ve invested millions in Wrigley and surrounding area. I think this is on Theo wanting to build a longer contending window. I think it’s Theo wanting to stay under cap in order to build for the future. Not sure if he’s right or not. Time will tell

Actually, the one thing I do credit Friedman with is holding on to most of their young talent. Hell, it wasn’t too long ago that the Nationals wanted Bellinger for Dozier, for example. It’s a good thing the Dodgers don’t “always” trade good players.

It was the Twins, not Nationals, but I understand your sentiment.

Also, here’s a thought – The Dodgers could have traded for Jose Fernandez, but didn’t want to include their then pitching phenom, Julio Urias, whom the Marlins really wanted in the deal. Fernandez could potentially be alive today with the change of scenery. Can you imagine that rotation now? The top three would be Buehler, Fernandez and Kershaw. That would have been sweet.

Theo & Jed said they cannot afford all of “The Core”…….

    Bryant
    Rizzo
    Baez
    Contreras
    Schwarber

    so lets look over this……..

Bryant was given an offer, he refused…..and his heart is not to remain in Chicago……so He is Gone !

Rizzo……best years are behind him…..still have him for 2021………..you think Rizzo will be worth $250 million at age 32 ?….he will get part of Brant money.

Baez……..2020 is a make or break year for El Mago……is he really that good……or just good…….we need to see if his bat is around 300….and can he take that next step leap of major stardom………right now, he is the BEST Cubs trade chip that Theo has !……..his agent will demand over $280 million plus after 2022 season.

Contreras………there are several young Catchers in Cubs system ready to take over by 2021…..Amaya is one of them……..Contreras will be a free agent after 2023……still have time to improve his trade value……….keep him around with Baez for now.

Schwarber……..Mr Babe Ruth……..Gorman Thomas hit long HRs….so did Dave Kingman………Schwarber has to hit above 280 to stay with the Cubs…….2020 is also a big year for him……he will be around $165 million after 2022 season…….he could hit 50 plus HR’s if he played all the time………again, he might be trade bait in July.

I’m guessing that Epstein is just patiently waiting for the official decision in the grievance before seriously engaging in Bryant trade talks. Now that the 3B FA market has completely shaken out, you have just Bryant and Arenado for contenders seeking an upgrade, and only the very deepest pockets can even afford to window shop the latter. Braves can pay in multiple high end pitching prospects because God knows the Cubs have nothing on the horizon in the minors.

The Dodgers do not really need any improvements; however, if they think about the future and the Luxury tax then consider sending Max Muncy and Joc Peterson to the Braves for Drew Waters and Sean Newcomb. Waters is a cc: Brett Butler, and Newcomb is ready to start in the MLB, throwing a shutout at the Dodgers in his debut. Braves can play Muncy at third base to fix their failure to keep Donaldson and Joc can hold down left field with Markakis and Duvall as backups. Giterdone

The Dodgers can’t trade Muncy after producing so many T-shirts mocking Bumgarner (great shirts, by the way). That’s simple mathematactics. Or is it methamatactics?

LOL…. Sure, trade two established big-leaguers for a couple question marks? Im sure Friedman cant wait to get that call from the Braves……

Contreras doesn’t have a grievance, there is no reason Epstein couldn’t have made some moves to get some starting pitching depth. Cubs have catching depth with Caratini, Davis, andAmaya on the way in 2021. Quintana doesn’t have a grievance, could have shed that salary easy. I think Theo is just done in Chicago and already looking towards his next gig.

It appears the Chubs are accumulating lots of utility infielders and no-name pitchers. Love it!

Not a bad pick up.. Cubs have been digging for those surprises for the BP this off season.. Not mad about getting Sadler, tepera, Winkler, and Pelham.. Along with bringing back Morrow.. Add to kimbrel, wick, Ryan, maples, mills, alzolay its not a bad pen… No Yankees pen but it could surprise, especially with a healthy morrow n kimbrel..

I still think Cubs are gonna trade Bryant, prolly to Phillies… Then sign Nic Castillinos , I believe that will be what Ricketts thinks will save face is bringing back Nic… So I predict a Phillies trade

    Bryant/Hayward for Bohm/Segura
    After cubs sign Nic …

I dont know why cubs dont send either
Contrearas to rays for Honeywell /Vidal Brujan
    Or
    Caratini for Honeywell

Beef up the pitching prosepects ,, Honeywell and Brailyn Marquez coming up in the next 2 year’s would be good behind Dervish n Hendricks
Brujan is a natural lead off hitter, speed demon, will man 2nd base with Javy at SS for years to come..
Bohm prolly ends up being Rizzos replacement at 1st in a few years
Segura takes over at 3rd for the rest of his 3 yrs contract , lead off hitter til Brujan comes up

    Cubs 2020
    Segura 3rd
    Castillinos RF
    Rizzo 1st
    Javy SS
    Schwarber LF
    Caratini C
    Horner 2nd
    Happ CF

    Pitching
Yu, Hendricks, Lester, Q, chatwood, mills

    Beyond 2020
    1st Rizzo/Bohm
    2nd Brujan/strumpf
    SS javy
    3rd Segura/Bohm
    LF schwarber/Davis
    CF Horner/ Happ
    RF Castillinos/ Roederer
    C Caratini/ Amaya

    Pitching
Darvish, Hendricks, Honeywell, Marquez, Alzolay, Jensen
