Red Sox Designate Travis Lakins

By Connor Byrne | January 17, 2020 at 6:25pm CDT

The Red Sox have designated right-hander Travis Lakins for assignment, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com tweets. His designation clears roster space for newly acquired southpaw Matt Hall.

This could bring an end to a Boston tenure that began when the team chose Lakins in the sixth round of the 2015 draft. Injuries have been a problem since then for Lakins, once a solid Red Sox prospect who suffered elbow fractures in both the 2016 and ’17 seasons. But Lakins persevered through those issues to make his major league debut last season, when he posted a solid 3.86 ERA/3.64 FIP with a strong 47.2 percent groundball rate across 16 appearances (three starts) and 23 1/3 innings. Lakins didn’t put up particularly impressive strikeout or walk rates, though, as he fanned just under seven batters per nine while recording a 3.86 BB/9.

Lakins spent the majority of last season as a member of Triple-A Pawtucket, with which he struggled to prevent runs after a successful (albeit brief) debut at the minors’ highest level in the previous campaign. The 25-year-old pitched to a 4.60 ERA/4.58 FIP with 8.4 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 over 45 Triple-A frames in 2019.

Good pick up for AJ (Friars) for the pen kids young and if his injury is no longer an issue I’d look into this one

They both have a small sample size, but they’re literally replacing someone with a 3.86 ERA with someone with a 9.48 ERA lmao.

One guy got results after fighting back through injuries.

The other guy just can’t get results.

Plenty of prospects with good reports wash out every month. If you believe otherwise refsnyder and swihart would like to have lunch.

Seems to represent a new style in how the team evaluates minor league talent. Might not be a bad thing in that the Sox ability to evaluate the pitching staff seemed to suffer under DD.

Lakins and Hall have combined for like 50 MLB innings….let’s hold off on making conclusions based on tiny sample sizes.

Also worth noting bullpen volatility and the such…

Fine trade off for Hall. Pen has reasonable righty depth but nothing beyond darwinzon on the left side

yup…totally forgot about him. so there’s a chance for three LHRPs to be at least decent. Curious to see if they use Taylor in the opener role more in 2020

I can’t see this trade helping the team.

Perhaps the Sox have other plans for Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez?
If Nathan Eovoldi and Price are traded they will need replacements in the rotation.
Travis Lakins will most likely not be picked up–so he will be in AAA for the Sox ( Pawtucket/Worcester).
Have you looked at the Sox 40 Man Roster–there are 24 pitchers auditioning for 12 or 13 spots on the Opening Day 25 team roster. Keep in mind CB will be scouring the waiver wire, 24/7, to find anyone that may be an inch better than someone currently on the roster. No one is safe including those recently signed.

Eovaldi will never be traded. Zero value and big contract

Then how will they be able to trade him?

They won’t be able to trade Eovaldi. Nobody is gonna want him after last year and with that contract. Price would be the best bet

“The 26-year-old split time last year between the majors and Triple-A. In 122 minor league appearances (85 starts), Hall is 33-15 with a 2.97 ERA. All his major league appearances (16) have come out of the bullpen.”

This is the statistical info published this morning for Matt Hall on the WEEI site.

    That’s not too bad.

I love how people make comparisons when they have never seen either pitch in the majors for a full year. Check back in 2021 & you will most likely see Hall in the bullpen & Lakins still in the minors or out of baseball.
