Kris Bryant Discusses Grievance Case, Extensions, Trade Rumors

By Mark Polishuk | February 15, 2020 at 6:12pm CDT

Though Kris Bryant is still in a Cubs uniform as Spring Training begins, the third baseman has nonetheless been one of the offseason’s top newsmakers due to the sheer amount of speculation that has swirled around his future over the last few months.  Bryant addressed much of this speculation today, speaking to reporters (including MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian and The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma) about a variety of topics, including the service-time grievance that was finally decided at the end of January.

Though the arbitration panel ruled in favor of the Cubs, Bryant said he holds “no hard feelings whatsoever” towards the team over the service-time issue.  “I completely respect this organization and everything they’ve done for me and my family. They’ve given me an opportunity to play the game that I love every single day,” Bryant said.

The intent of the grievance, Bryant explained, was to confront a longstanding concern that players and the MLBPA have had for some time over top prospects whose promotions to the Major Leagues are delayed for seemingly thin or even outright dubious reasons in order to limit their service time.  In Bryant’s situation, the Cubs kept him in the minors to begin the 2015 season ostensibly so the then-star prospect could work on his defense, only for Bryant to get the call to Chicago’s MLB roster on April 17 — to the day, just long enough for the Cubs to gain an extra year of contractual control over Bryant’s services.

Bryant took it upon himself to file a grievance to better help future players in the same situation, and to put a spotlight on the service time issue as the league and players’ union prepare for talks about a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.  “I definitely felt that responsibility to take it on,” he said.  “I want to be the guy to fight for this because I feel it’s right and it’s going to help us in two years [during CBA talks].  But I always knew it was an uphill battle.  No, I didn’t flip any tables or anything like that.  It was very respectful from the get-go.”

Though the Cubs were widely expected to win the grievance case, the chance of a decision in Bryant’s favor (which would have made him a free agent after the 2020 season rather than the 2021 season) was seen as a reason why he might still be a Cub today, as rival clubs were unwilling to trade for Bryant if they didn’t know how long he would be under team control.  While Chicago continues to explore trade possibilities, it has now been three weeks since Bryant’s case was decided, with seemingly no progress made towards a deal.

Bryant spent this winter trying to avoid trade rumors as best he could, though he said he hasn’t gotten any indications from the Cubs about any potential deals, which doesn’t fit entirely well with the former NL MVP.

“I guess I would like to be in the loop a little bit,” Bryant said.  “Obviously, they don’t have to keep me in the loop by any means, you know?  But, I feel like I’ve earned a little respect here, in just how I go about my business and just who I am as a player and a person, too, to kind of sit down and have talks like that.”

While a trade is out of Bryant’s hands, he reiterated how much he would like to remain with the Cubs, and said he is “always open” to discussing a possible contract extension to remain in Wrigleyville over the long term.  It was almost exactly one year ago that Bryant told reporters that he hadn’t yet been approached by Chicago’s front office about an extension, and during Saturday’s media session, he wanted to clear the air about other contractual speculation.

“The biggest thing with the trade rumors that have disappointed me is I feel like people, not everybody, but the main reasoning behind it is: Let’s get rid of him now because he doesn’t want to be here in two years,” Bryant said.  “He turned down this monster extension ’well north of $200MM.’  And I’m like, ’Where was that?  I never saw that.’  It’s just these rumors and sources and people just saying things.  The only thing that matters is what comes from my mouth.  Never once have I said I never wanted to play here.  I’m pretty sure you guys can go through all the recordings, all the interviews.  I’ve always said I respect everyone in this organization, everyone in this city, the fans.  We have it so good here.  Of course I would love to play here.”

Saying all the right things, but I still doubt he’s a Cub after the trade deadline unless they are somehow in contention.

Go down to a homeless shelter with a video camera and ask each person there what charity has helped them.

Go down to the welfare office and Social Security office and ask each person waiting there what charity has helped them and how.

Contreras? Come on, man. 90% of female Cubs fans have KB as their #1. And most male fans have KB in their top 2 (either with Rizzo or Baez).

Cubs are in the ultimate “find the scapegoat” mode. It started with Joe Maddon and if they trade Bryant the front off will hope the fans feel better.

Problem is, the real problem is Theo Epstein.

Right, Senator Sanders is so dumb because he wants all Americans to earn a decent wage and to have decent healthcare coverage. I’m a Republican who has awesome medical coverage through my part-time military service (officer, ARNG), but even I support our next president, President Bernie Sanders.

Cubs should trade Kris Bryant ASAP. I’d propose to Tampa Bay for CF Kevin Kiermaier, SS Xavier Edwards, and RHP Shane Baz. Rays could use a middle-of-the-order bat, and don’t have room for Adamses, Franco, Brujan, Lowe, and Edwards, so there’s talent excess. With Kiermaier and Bryant ($35 million for next three years and Bryant probably $42 million next two years) the money is close, but the Cubs should drop under the luxury tax threshold, while also getting a future rotation piece for 2021 (Baz), a great speedy, contact hitter for 2021 (Edwards), and currently better OF defense w/ Kiermaier.

The Cubs are not going to catch the Dodgers, Nationals, and Mets this year; all look really good on paper!!! They should use 2020 as a reset.

The fact that most of these posters on here end up being flaming leftists who just really have to make the conversation about their ideology makes the horrible sports takes make more sense. The good news is they can’t help but preach about it, so we don’t have to speculate on who’s who.

I don’t imagine the Cubs would be interested in Kiermaeir’s $12M salary when they have Almora in CF. Given they could get JBJ for scarcely more than picking up his salary, I doubt they’d trade for Kiermaeir’s 3-year obligation. Gaz is still single-A with a weak BB9 rate. FG has Edwards listed as a 45+ player.

2 year’s of Bryant should land the Cubs of a package closer to what Betts got.

And thank you for your service, but most people will not be willing to give up their private insurance in favor of a government program, and pay for the privilege of doing so.

I think you’re wrong. They’re not happy with Almora reportedly, and KK’s defense is much better than JBJ’s. Baz and Edwards would be the main pieces with KK representing the big part of a platoon with elite defense balancing out the cash a little. I know I both didn’t want to lose the prospects and was intrigued so I’d say it’s pretty close. Not sure on his splits but Almora as a defensive replacement and right handed bat for platoon might be great. I agree on insurance somewhat.

Contreras is the 2nd best catcher in baseball. By far. After yadi Molina retires. Contreras will be the best for the next 7-8 years no one comes close.

Apparently because people think pitch framing is a thing he’s not a top 10 catcher.

Why do you act like it’s highly unlikely they’ll be in contention? They may not win the division or the wild card, but it’s more likely or not they’ll be in contention most, if not all, of the season.

I think this is fair. I think they get written off for stumbling this past season, but other than the Pirates getting slapped around the division is open, and in a good way, with four competitive teams.

He was also the first ever player to hit a “Full Hluse” Two 2B and 3HRs.

And lastly the first player to hit 3 homers in 3straight innings. That was vs the Nats 7th,8th and 9th innings

To be fair, can’t lump in those awesome games into a career and act like they’ll boost it. It’s cool to talk about, but then there are situations like Jake Bauers where he hit for the cycle but then he’s not actually impressive otherwise. I agree Bryant is great though when healthy. But after the injuries he’ll have to regain that status, of course.

One major factor that not many people are seeing is that a whole bunch of money comes off the books after this upcoming season. I believe the last number I heard was they have just around $90 mil committed to the 2021 roster.

While they might not be able to sign all of their upcoming FAs, they might be able to sneak some extensions out to some before they hit FA.

The result was going to be obvious, Bryant was going to lose. But it’s good he highlighted the issue. The rules here lead to unjust results for the players. This is a problem that needs to be addressed in the next CBA, and it should be a priority item. Excessively long team control is unreasonable.

This goes to show you how much fake news there is out there (sorry for using that political term). The fact that Bryant comes out and clearly states he has never been offered a $200M extension contract flies in the face of what many baseball reporters have written. Where do they get this information from? Makes you wonder how many other fake rumors there are out there. Maybe the next one to fall will be the Red Sox 2018 ‘cheating’ scandal? Fingers crossed! Baseball doesn’t need another black eye right now.

Boston cheated. Plain as day. That’s why MLB investigated and is preparing to release their findings; if Boston didn’t cheat, MLB would have come out and said “there’s nothing there”. The fact they keep delaying an announcement suggests this could be worse than Houston.

With that said, someone in the Cubs organization probably made it up. That or the reporter who broke it did, in which case his or her journalistic integrity is shot and their career will be over if anyone ever finds out. My money says some intern in the Cubs FO tried to score brownie poins.

As I stated above, it’s hard to know what is real and what is not but all reports so far is that the Boston scandal is much less egregious and serious compared to what Houston did. If a player or two entered the replay room once or twice during the season, there will probably be no punishment at all. Maybe a fine?

How could it be worse? If they stole and relayed every pitch signal, it would be the same. What has been reported was using the video room to figure out signs from second base. Wrong, absolutely but every team from middle school baseball on expects teams to try to gain those signs and defends against it. Any team that cant6 defend against that isn’t a baseball team. Is there an advantage, sure or you wouldn’t do it but it should be short term and minimal against any baseball team.

Wrong, absolutely but every team from middle school baseball on expects teams to try to gain those signs and defends against it. Any team that cant6 defend against that isn’t a baseball team. Is there an advantage, sure or you wouldn’t do it but it should be short term and minimal against any baseball team.

My guess is at least 75% of what is reported is made up, maybe closer to 90%. The Boston press is notorious for that.

First they reported ‘most executives think Betts won’t have much interest because of his salary and one year of control’. Obviously, almost every team in BB would like to have had Betts.

Then some of them were talking in terms of May + Lux + ???. Again, obviously wrong.

They not only create the rumors, they usually have no idea what the players are worth.

The Cubs had a rough 2019, but they’re a strong team. They’re also one of the richest teams in baseball. Selling now would be a disgrace, They need to go for it, and get some more pitching at the trade deadline.

Beltran only played for the NYY BEFORE Houston and there’s no evidence he or any NYY was involved in sign stealing then… Even in Houston I don’t believe Beltran was the instigator. Cora was.

Also there are only a handful of us NYY fans posting here on MLBTR and in any given Astros thread maybe two or three of us. Meanwhile there are dozens of commenters railing on the Astros, including you. So this meme about us NYY fans leading the charge against cheating is a complete crock of crap.

The BoSox used Apple watches to relay signs to the hitters. No suspicion of buzzers there, just conclusive facts.
Two of the last three WS are tainted.
But if we want to play this game, then we could easily say the titles won by Jeter’s Yankees were all tainted because of the rampant PED use on those teams. Giambi, Clemens, Petite, ARod, Johnson. Etc.
      Give it a rest!

Juiced pitchers vs. juiced hitters. Not condoning steroids, but they don’t tell you when the breaking ball is coming. It really sounds like the Astros and Red Sox were the only teams doing this. Steroids were used by every team in every locker room back in the day.

Every team tries to steal signs from second and every team tries to defend against it. Red Sox were wrong to have someone in the video room figure out signs but advantage gained is minimal when every team expects it and it is easily defensible. Astros are in a whole different league.

His agent Is mad man Boras. Communications go thru him. Bryant hasn’t been treated badly. He’s getting over 18 mil this season. Not worth more than that. Harper getting 25 mil. Rendon Arenado more. Sorry Bryant is not that level of player – he’s very good when healthy but not in the upper one percent in league When he hits the market he will be 30 with mileage. If some foolish owner like Arte throws a Pujols deal his way ok. It will turn out same way

There are 30 teams, 26 players each. That is 780 players, with half being pitchers. So 390. Top 1% of 390 means he is one of the top 4 position players in baseball. Trout, Betts, Yelich, Bellinger, Acuna, Soto…..shall I go on?

Your math only works if pitchers have an equal distributions of “best players” as position players do.

If most people were to rank the Top 5 players in baseball overall (pitchers and position players), the Top 5 would not include any pitchers. Position players are considered more valuable and better players than pitchers are.

MLB just ranked its Top 100 players of 2020. The Top 10 only contained 2 pitchers and the Top 100 only contained 22 pitchers. Pitchers might make up half of the roster, but they only make up less than a quarter of the best players in baseball.

another Bryant story !……just because he was not traded yet….biggest trade chip name out there…………here are the options for the Cubs…..

Keep Bryant and give him an extension……

    trade him in July……..

trade him in the off season…….

let him walk and get a draft pick .

so if you want Bryant,,,,,,your team will have to give up at least three of your top five prospects……mostly pitching……..if you reject that,,,,,,,,then try to trade for old man Longoria.

Bryant is a total class act. Very straight forward press conference. His remarks about the new CBA in 2 years makes me wonder if that’s why Manfred went so easy on the Astro cheaters. Immunity be damned. The union is blindly backing them and fines and/or suspensions (which they deserved) would make it a more contentious negotiation. Manfred’s spineless.

Based on the outcry of the other 29 teams, I don’t think the majority of the MLBPA union members would have had a problem with player suspensions. They all seem to feel Manfred went way too light on the players themselves. But I’m sure Manfred was fearful of their response nonetheless.

As a Cards fan, I never really understood the whole trading Bryant thing. If he were a Cardinal I would personally be super P’sd if he were part of trade rumors. In that same respect, I am of course happy it is being discussed since I cant see a version of the Cubs that would be better without him. I can see all of the different points of view from either himself or the union or management and to each there own and rightfully so. One season does not define a team and frankly the Cubs are of course still a team to beat in the Central.

Bryant is a good baseball player but his value is not good as people think it is right now. People are forgetting that Bryant’s numbers have been declining to him being on the DL a few times since 2016. Bryant would be a perfect fit with the Braves’ line up if the Cubs plan on moving him since they can something in return for him but that depends on how he performs this year.

      Reply
      • Priggs89

Why? He already puts up better numbers than Arenado. Why do they have to be “astronomical numbers” and not just his normal .900+ OPS? He’s easily one of the best (and most consistent) hitters in baseball when healthy.

Outside of injuries, the only reason he might not reach Arenado money is because he’ll be a little older than Arenado was when he signs. He’s absolutely worth it if healthy.

You must be a comedian to think Bryant’s numbers are better than Arenado’s numbers. Bryant’s best year was in 2016 and one can argue that was a fluke year. Majority of Bryant’s home runs were off the Reds who were considered one of the worse baseball pitching staffs of all time that year and broke a record for giving up the most home runs in one season. Bryant’s numbers never been the same after that.
Bryant is inpatient at the plate. Bryant does not work pitch counts and swings at pitches out of the zone. Most opposing pitchers know this about him.

I find it useful to start with a player’s away splits. Arenado’s road OPS is .799. Bryant’s road OPS is .881. That’s a significant difference. And Bryant’s OPS at GAP is lower than his road OPS, so that’s not helping him.

I would love for the MLB and MLBPA to find a way to incentivize teams to retain players, especially drafted and home grown talent.

It would be great for baseball if the Cubs would resign Bryant long term. It would be great if other teams did the same for their stars more often.

her are the numbers if the Cubs had to pay their five main hitters with contract extensions…..

    Bryant…..( 8year/ $285 million )
    Rizzo…….( 8 year / $185 million )
    Baez…….( 10 year / $300 million )
    Contreras…..( 8 year / $165 million )
    Schwarber……( 5 year / $120 million )

I believe Bryant will be traded this year….maybe around July…..but two top MLB ready pitching prospects is a MUST !

I believe Rizzo will NOT get a new contract, and will be traded to a AL team next year….it is not about money, more with age.

I believe Baez will get his contract……

I believe Contreras will get traded….Amaya is in the wings……

I believe Schwarber might get offered some type of deal…..but not long term……unless some team offers something to Theo that he cannot pass up.

I think the Cubs will be competitive this year, as soon as they have a manager that doesn’t pick the daily starting positions out of a hat.

But if they are not seriously contending for 1st place at the trade deadline, then they should move all the guys who are FAs after 2021. You have to assume that, since they weren’t competitive in 2019, and if they aren’t competitive in 2020, they are unlikely to be competitive in 2021.

It would be hugely unpopular, but Bryant, Rizzo, Contreras & Baez, should bring back something along the lines of 4 top-50 types and 3-4 top-100 types.
