Mariners Sign Manny Banuelos To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 11, 2020 at 5:28pm CDT

The Mariners announced Tuesday that they’ve signed left-hander Manny Banuelos to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League camp in Spring Training.

Banuelos, 29 next month, once ranked as one of baseball’s premier pitching prospects but has been persistently hampered by injuries. The southpaw has undergone Tommy John surgery, another operation to remove bone spurs from his elbow and more recently been plagued by shoulder troubles. Banuelos did log 50 2/3 innings with the White Sox in 2019, but he was knocked around to the tune of a 6.93 ERA with an ugly 44-to-33 K/BB ratio and 12 home runs allowed.

That was only the second season in which the once-vaunted lefty has pitched in the big leagues. Despite a lack of success at baseball’s top level, though, Banuelos has notched a career 3.98 ERA in 376 innings of Triple-A work, averaging 8.4 K/9 against 4.4 BB/9 along the way. Seattle still isn’t certain how it’ll round out the back of the rotation, so Banuelos will compete for a spot either in the fifth rotation slot or in the bullpen this sprin

We had high hopes for him. Oh well..
At least Betances had a successful stint as a NYY.

Well they did trade him for Chasen Shreve, who they then traded for Luke Voit. So there’s the silver lining.

So basically if you arrange your rotation so manny starts against clubs like the marlins or orioles he can put up an era below 4 with nice k/9 numbers. He’s got a good track record against aaa teams

This is pretty accurate, he was lights out in about 20 innings against SEA, BAL, TB and DET but gave up as many runs as innings pitched against everyone else.

Well then he should light up spring training and look like a superstar

I’m sure he will, which will give Dunn more time to develop in Tacoma.

Pretty sure this won’t happen since there’s an abundance of potential in the BP but I’d love to see Dunn get his developmental time in our BP before sliding into the rotation with Gilbert either late 20’ or on the OD roster 2021. We’d probably see an uptick in velo- could be a good closer candidate

Manny has been unlucky. So promising him in the early 2010s at Trenton ( AA), the injuries may have proven too much to overcome.

January 1, 2015: Manny Traded by the New York Yankees to the Atlanta Braves for David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve
it’s interesting that Manny , Carpenter and Shreve for 2021 all are coming into camp on a non major league contract with invites to Spring Training. Carpenter for the Reds and Shreve with the Cardinals. All I know is that he pretty much stank up the place when on the mound that year with the Braves.
