MARCH 7: Beede will visit noted orthopedist Dr. Neal ElAttrache for his previously-anticipated second opinion Monday, per various reporters (including Andrew Baggarly of the Athletic).
MARCH 4: The Giants announced Wednesday that an MRI on right-hander Tyler Beede revealed a flexor strain and a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. No immediate treatment plan was provided, as the club will be seeking second opinions for the time being. Beede exited his most recent spring outing due to tightness in his elbow. Beede tells reporters that his UCL is 75 percent intact and that he’s not expecting surgery at this time (Twitter link via Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle).
Beede, 26, was a leading candidate to break camp in the fifth spot in the Giants’ rotation behind Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly. Now, however, his outlook is considerably cloudier, which could open the door for an alternative option to seize that role. Just last week, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi listed Beede, Dereck Rodriguez, Andrew Suarez and Logan Webb as potential rotation candidates. The Giants also have veterans Trevor Cahill and Tyson Ross in camp on non-roster invitees.
At the very least, it looks exceedingly likely that Beede will open the season on the injured list. Obviously, though, any UCL injury and/or flexor strain comes with the possibility of a serious operation. Even non-surgical treatments for those types of injuries tend to come with lengthy rehab stints.
It’s a tough blow for Beede, a two-time first-round pick (Blue Jays in 2011, Giants in 2014) who has yet to cement himself as a consistent starter at the big league level. The right-hander started 22 games for the Giants in ’19 and racked up 117 innings, but he also struggled to a 5.08 ERA (5.03 FIP). Despite the Giants’ cavernous home park, the long ball was an issue for Beede (1.7 HR/9). There was perhaps some hope that a correction in the ball’s composition could help Beede. After all, he averaged 94.3 mph on a fastball with above-average spin. Beede’s 8.7 K/9 rate and 11.2 percent swinigng-strike rate both checked in better than that of the league-average starting pitcher as well.

Glad the Jays didn’t sign him in 2011…
OilCanLloyd
Funny eh! Because of it they got Marcus Stroman in 2012. Who they milked, then they flipped for Anthony Kay and SWR.
bluejays92
Especially since because he didn’t sign with them they were able to draft Stroman in 2012 with the compensation pick that they received.
its_happening
They didn’t sign Paxton either. It happens.
OilCanLloyd
Not sure which the compensation pick was. But Jays took Sánchez or Syndergaard when they couldn’t get Paxton.
its_happening
I believe it was Noah. Blue Jays seemed to enjoy drafting good players after duds, like Deck in 2010 before Noah and Sanchez, DJ Davis before Stroman, Warmoth before Pearson. Kinda funny.

Webb has the best FIP and xFIP of the bunch.
paddyo furnichuh
I’d like to see Tyson Ross make a comeback with close the level of performance he had before TOS.
pustule bosey
I guess we have to wait for the grade of the sprain, looks like a grade 3 or worse is a tear
Steve Adams
Any sprain, by definition, involves some degree of stretching/tearing. Grade 3 would be the most severe type.
angt222
This might open up a spot for Dereck Rodriguez.
rightyspecialist
Dereck Rodriguez. Lol
Frisco500
He’s not good.

Don’t tell the SFChronicle and their dedication to selling giants’ fans false hope, be it wrapped in “they’ve got STUPID money and are absolutely gonna get Stanton/Harper/Cole/etc. … (got ‘outbid’ in the end)” or not.
Bruce Jenkins literally just wrote an entire article about how the “the dodgers aren’t actually as good as they look and the rest of the division is just crap so ‘our giants’ could have a wild card shot!”.
claude raymond
CCCTL, use of the word literally and using quote marks when that’s not literally what he wrote?
And I read those writers all the time and they’ve never written what you put quotes regarding the STUPID money.
claude raymond
You’re kind of clueless. And you quote me on that.
brucenewton
Giants are looking at an easy 100 L’s.
WarrenSpahn
Bruce Jenkins should focus completely on surfing or take early retirement….
claude raymond
Maybe you people should actually read the article and not the bs by ccctl
PandaExpress
I believe the quote was something like “2nd place is not out of the question for the Giants.” He said what we all know in that LA will win the West, only thing of note here is he is more optimistic that all the other teams are fairly average.
claude raymond
Thx. And clearly different than what Dumass “quoted”
its_happening
A little over a year ago some Giants fans on this site and SF media thought they’d be in on Harper. I wouldn’t call the poster clueless. All you have to do is go back to the Harper saga and you’d see Frisco was linked for quite a while.
claude raymond
So you’re saying his “quotes” were accurate. That’s what my use of “clueless” referred to. You just said “fans” and he was talking about “writers”. The writers, at the time of the Harper quest, essentially repeated what the nationally based reporters were posting on social media and what some radio host in philly was claiming.
Jeez there are horrible reading skills demonstrated on this site
its_happening
Claude – Let’s review what I wrote together, shall we?
I said: “A little over a year ago some Giants fans on this site and SF media thought they’d be in on Harper. ”
So I did mention SF media, and if you do a simple search you will see they were in-fact talking about Harper to SF. Now, SILLY ME thought you’d have the wherewithal and foresight to understand that and boy was I mistaken!
I understand you struggle on these sites with logic, comprehension and overall baseball knowledge. That’s ok. We just ask that you bring a real argument to the table next time. It would demonstrate proper reading and writing skills on this website that you do not possess at this time.
rightyspecialist
Bay area baseball writers are dreadful. Pandering homers . Baggarly, Schulmam ,Jenkins ….These guys write like they’re on the Giants PR payroll
its_happening
righty it was interesting; on one hand there was this big issue regarding luxury tax for the Giants, then suddenly they were “major players” for Bryce. Which was it? Then they could not decide if they were rebuilding or contending.
Jean Matrac
What’s your point? The Giants weren’t the only team to try and get below the CBT threshold that had the potential to be major players in free-agency. Did you forget about the 2018 off-season when people were saying it was the end of big, long-term contracts? Both the LADs and NYYs, made efforts to get below the threshold. Same thing is happening now with the BoSox, and Cubs. Those are probably the 5 wealthiest teams in baseball, and all have had issues with the CBT. And all have the ability to be major players for any FA. Only the Cubs seem to lack the desire to be major players for big time FAs.
And no, it wasn’t the Giants that couldn’t decide what they were doing, it was just confused fans like rightyspecialist, that couldn’t understand what they were doing. What the were doing is simply this; retool, try to stay competitive while restocking the farm, and be players whenever a talented player, that they thought could help the team, became available. Believe me. the Giant’s FO is not as dim-witted as rightyspecialist.
claude raymond
Holy crap dude! I’ll say it again and now read carefully. The local writers reported what the national writers had reported
claude raymond
Then fans jumped on that
its_happening
The Giants decided not to pursue something most likely concocted by the media, stoking the fire of the fans. And exposing Claude Raymond as a neanderthal.
The Giants have done close to nothing at this point. We can’t judge them yet until these contracts are off the books. Some cannot be moved yet.
claude raymond
And rebuilding by definition is taking something completely apart then putting it together…rebuilding. You can’t rebuild, by definition, when you have so many difficult contracts on the books.
Logic? Really? I ain’t seeing it from you. Just the typically spoiled giants fans of recent vintage. Try experiencing giants painful history from 72 to 85 before you suggest that you suggest these giants are killing you.
claude raymond
And responding to righty like he has added ANYTHING of value, ever on this site, leaves me deciding that neither of you are worthy of future responses. I’ve already eliminated righty and now I’ve eliminated you We’re.
Yeh, I know, who cares? You two enjoy the honeymoon
5TUNT1N
I do kinda like the youthful take of Alex Pavlovic every now and then, but I agree to the fact that Schulman, Jenkins, lean more towards always supporting the team. Baggarly does mostly but can surprise you with moments of humility about the organizations place in the division.
Pete'sView
Sorry to hear of Beede’s injury, but realistically, he has never shown consistent major league form, and for that matter, wasn’t particularly outstanding at Vanderbilt. Why the Giants took him with their first pick (2014) always confounded me. Players drafted after Beede include: Matt Chapman, Cole Tucker, Michael Chavis and Luke Weaver. I’ve got to think Webb is the most likely to win the #5 spot, but Tyson Ross could surprise.
Jean Matrac
Beede was a major part of a College WS winning team. And it’s not about what he did at Vanderbilt, it’s about trying to accurately project how a particular guy will develop. That’s something all teams shoot and miss on. Citing players taken after him is disingenuous, because that happens every single year and every single team is guilty of passing up on guys that develop into better players..
Ducey
Is there likely to be a change in the “ball’s composition” this season?
BigFred
With him or without him, that’s a brutal rotation. I guess they’re hoping for career years from everyone.
Jean Matrac
Admittedly it isn’t a good rotation, but to call it “brutal” is probably an exaggeration. The only big loss from last season is Bumgarner, and he’s being replaced by Cueto, who was very good when healthy.
Last season they were about average, being just below league average in ERA+, but above league average in runs allowed, and WHIP. With the additions, and a surplus of potential bounce back guys, I don’t see them as being much worse than 2019,that being about average.
PandaExpress
@tad2b13: Exactly, there not going to be a worse rotation than last year. Losing Bum, a 3 war pitcher is not the end of the world. Cueto is effectively replacing him and has had >3 war 6 times in his career. Shark really figured things out last year and was our best pitcher the last half of the year. Add Gausman and Smyly– all they have to do to replace Pomeranz/Holland is have a war > -1.2. Yes, that is how bad they were. Alot more depth, Tyler Anderson could add alot as well.
SFGiants4ever
I was really hoping to see Beede and Webb in the rotation this year to see what they can bring for the next 5 years or more, not sure how long it’ll take Beede to get healthy, but it is obvious to most of us that besides Cueto and the rookies the rest of them are all on display for trades. As you guys stated the rotation is only slightly worse than last year and that is only because I think Bum is going to have a really good year this year. But to contradict myself, Smily and Gausman are probably better than Holland and Pomeranz.
The biggest difference between this years pitchers and the ones they started 19′ off with is the bullpen.
Cubguy13
Maybe they should have pitching machines instead of actual pitchers. Seems the job is becoming way too dangerous now a days and humans can no longer tolerate pitching without getting hurt constantly
its_happening
Eliminate all elbow/arm guards and that will force hitters not to crowd the plate. It will give the pitcher the outside corner to work with and eventually pitchers will scale back the heat. Helmet face guards are fine and should be recommended. The arm injuries will decrease, SP innings will rise again and it will help solve the gamespeed dilemma.
Mick1956
Wow, there is an inordinate amount of these over the past few seasons, but this season seems disproportionate to even that group. I’d imagine MLB is conducting comprehensive studies to try and ascertain information leading to the cause of these.
Nolan Ryan stated that he believes it has to do with too many breaking balls at a young age. It substantially declines the amount of fastballs a pitcher throws throughout his life, thus his arm doesn’t develop to sustain hard throwing required of an MLB pitcher.
I believe him because he knows a hell of a lot more than I do about pitching.
JayRyder
This Sucks. But Beede hasn’t lived up to much anyway.
It’s too bad to not see what he has under new management Yet. But I figure slow play him. Thru mid June. To ramp up.
Probably looking at surgery at Some point. Lost season next Year. Like Cueto. Have him back for August September…
Iknowmorebaseball
Beede is a weak pitcher and the, Giants are terrible so let’s talk about the Dodgers please!
SFGiants4ever
Go to the dodger page and talk all you want about that team.
PandaExpress
He said his ligament is 75% in tact. What that means idk.
Seems safe to say he won’t begin the year in the rotation at this point.
Finlander
My math tells me he means that it is 25% torn.
Rob66
At what point would it be better to just go ahead with TJ instead of messing around with treatments that only extend the time missed? I know Tanaka was able to avoid it, but most just get mediocre results until TJ is actually done.
scottn59c
You’re right. Except there’s no guarantee that every player makes it back from TJ surgery. In this case, if there’s real optimism that this is just a strain and not an issue of a torn UCL, then there’s no reason to jump the gun. He’s getting further evaluation, and that’s the smart thing to do.
Maknauer21
Beede was gonna gave a breakout year this year. Last year he showed flashes of dominance when he could control his fastball, and in the spring he looked phenomenal with his control. Hopefully it won’t be too long on the IL and he will back in about month just after opening day. I think Logan Webb and Dereck Rodriguez are the 2 favorites for the 5th spot.
norcal73
I see the bullpen as his future now. Maybe hard to trust him for 200 innings for awhile. Kind of seemed like a guy who would have a hard time staying focused for nine innings to me anyway but it’s a shame to see him get hurt.
ryanw-2
Didn’t Ohtani have the same problem in Spring Training 2018? And then…
SFGiantsGallore
Our whole season, FOILED! Lol.
