Quick Hits: Bauer’s Sandlot Game, Yankees, German, Astros, Verlander

By TC Zencka | March 14, 2020 at 11:11am CDT

The enigmatic Trevor Bauer isn’t letting a state of emergency stop him from playing baseball, per his Twitter account. Bauer is organizing a “sandlot” game for any interested MLB or MiLB  players still in Arizona, complete with mandatory mics for all players involved for streaming across his social channels. While the wisdom of such a gathering may be at odds with directives of social distancing, there will no doubt be plenty of interest in watching Bauer spearhead, well, anything, really, but especially a sandlot-style ballgame as the rest of the sporting world is in shut down. More than half of his Reds’ teammates have left camp, per The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans, but many players from the Reds and other organizations remain in Arizona. Let’s check in on how else the virus might be affecting the ramp-up to the 2020 season…

  • Yankees’ right-hander Domingo German, currently suspended for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy, will have his own return delayed in step with the MLB season, per Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. Davidoff offers clarification on the terms of German’s suspension, which will keep him on the shelf for the first 81 games of the 2020 season, whenever the season begins. Because the terms of the suspension are classified in games, there’s little wiggle room for German even if the season should be further delayed or truncated due to the spread of COVID-19. German had his best season to date in 2019, going 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA/4.72 FIP across 143 innings of work, striking out 9.6 K/9 versus 2.5 BB/9.
  • The Astros might be see the biggest benefit of a delayed season as it gives their ace Justin Verlander time to heal, writes MLB.com’s Ricard Justice. The Astros have a difficult season ahead, and Verlander is arguably the most important player for the defending American League champs. Verlander’s lat strain had put his opening day start in question, but with an extra month (and perhaps more) to heal, the Astros’ will certainly benefit in getting Verlander back earlier, even if he’s not ready whenever the season does actually kick off.

Plenty of players might benefit from the delay. Ohtani should be fully ready. Paxton will be close. Verlander should be his normal, whiny self.

Hopefully MLB doesn’t do too rushed of a ramp up and get a ton of injuries once real games start.

This could be brilliant on Bauer’s part; if his game garners attention it might force MLB to take a hard look at some aspects that might help grow their game and become more popular. Potential blessing for baseball.

The reason for shutting down is to get you morons used to doing whatever the gov. tells you to do for whatever ridiculous reason they come up with. Like shutting down an entire nation of 350 million because a whopping two dozen people died. States like Ohio and NY declaring states of emergencies when NOT A SINGLE DEATH has occurred. Lol you couldn’t make this nonsense up. You people are too far gone to tell you’re being had.

If you can get your head out of your ass and stop thinking only about yourself for a few seconds, these massive shutdowns are occuring worldwide and not limited only to the U.S.. You and I may not die or even get sick contracting the virus, but we can be carriers passing it on to others where it can cause serious harm. Your comment is truly full of ignorance and embarrassing.

Its not non sense at all. Its trying to protect our elders (age 65+) who have a 15% chance death rate if contracting covid 19. Currently the elder population sits around 46 million in the US. 15% of 46 million amounts to 7.9 million. Does that number sound minimal to you? This is not a game. That’s how many potential human lives are at risk here and can be lost, just in America. So the fact those two states declared state emergencies before any deaths is brilliant. We need to shut this thing down as fast as possible to protect our mothers, fathers, grand mothers and fathers. All the people who supported you growing up. Now is the time for us to act and to take action, swiftly, and protect those loved ones. This is not the flu, let’s not be ignorant.

I think the Yankees ought to make a decision on Judge’s situation now- if they even think he needs to have surgery on that rib area, then do it now instead of waiting until MLB resumes and then deciding he needs it- which seems to be the Yankee way lately when it comes to dealing with injuries anyway.

    I suggest:

Quarantine the players for two weeks to ensure nobody tests positive; play games in their respective stadiums until such a time as the public is clear to begin attending again.

This is not a great idea, but it’s a compromise. Or, just cancel the season and have one giant playoff in September/October.

I think most people would like that, quarantine all players and all staff for the two weeks, and then let them play in empty stadiums to make sure they don’t get infected by anyone else. It would give all of us something to do, other than sit here and twiddle our thumbs.

Concern is not if players get sick..it is if they do..or staff etc. and then pass it on to others. This virus is all about passing it on since symptoms don’t show foot at least 5 days.

Hence the quarantine for two weeks first, make sure that we know who has it and who doesn’t. Quarantine all players and all staff needed for the games, make sure we know who has it, get it all taken care of, and then let them play in empty stadiums with the other players who have also been quarantined and taken care of.

If the season is truncated do they reduce the number of games the player is suspended? (Ie if a player is suspended 81 games for a regular season but half the season is cancelled) do they still have an 81 game suspension or do they give him like 40 or 41 games?

What’s the best baseball game to play on PC? (I don’t have playstation or other gaming platform and don’t intend to get one). I used to play Baseball Mogul which has loads of great features but lacks some basic ones, like an effective double switch, and is kinda buggy and it doesn’t seem to be a priority for the developer.

Interesting thing about Bauer’s sandlot game. Since it is not a sanctioned event and against the rules for permitted activities in the standard player contract, any player injured in the game would lose their salary for the 2020 season and the team at their discretion could hae their contract cancelled..
