Latest News & Notes On MLB & Coronavirus

By Jeff Todd | April 16, 2020 at 1:03pm CDT

There’s renewed hope in the struggle of Athletics minor-league coach Webster Garrison against COVID-19, as Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle relays via Twitter. Garrison required the support of a ventilator for over three weeks before finally being extubated today. You can read more on his story from the outset of his hospitalization here. While Garrison obviously still faces a tough road to a full recovery, it’s much-welcomed good news. MLBTR extends its best wishes to his family, friends, and colleagues.

More notes on the coronavirus crisis relating to the baseball world …

  • The state of Arizona is at least open to considering hosting the 2020 MLB season, as Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Whether that’ll prove feasible or desirable from the league and union perspective remains to be seen, but state willingness would certainly be one of many preconditions to making out a workable plan. Governor Doug Ducey says that Arizona is “very open-minded to hosting whatever Major League Baseball would like from the state,” though only at such time as it is “appropriate for public health if Arizona were in a position to reopen.”
  • Maury Brown of Forbes examines the difficulties that Major League Baseball faces — and some of the possible financial solutions it could pursue. In particular, Brown posits that lost revenues — the full scope of which aren’t yet known but which are sure to be massive — could spur MLB commissioner Rob Manfred to press forward with long-pondered plans for expansion. That could also dovetail with the minor-league realignment efforts the league had already launched. Kevin Reichard of Ballpark Digest wrote recently about the fact that new MLB clubs would need additional minor-league clubs. As Brown explains it, MLB could clean house on certain existing affiliates and then “quickly whip around and expand into markets where state-of-the-art ballpark facilities could be built,” while also collecting “some form of expansion fees.”

every single country on the planet is shut down to varying degrees, yet brainwashed individuals such as yourself continue to self-righteously post this idiocy. thanks for making it easy to identify who to ignore, I guess.

I really wish there was a way for you and the rest of the 20% or so of the American public that prefers propaganda to facts could congregate away from the rest of us and pass the virus around amongst yourselves without risking everyone else’s health. unfortunately we don’t live in that world

“I disproved nothing, I don’t like what you say so I hope you die cause what you said hurt my feelings” thanks for that useless post Miket.

Anyways. Thetruth is right to some extent. The economy cannot sustain a prolonged shut down. They just issued a 2 trillion stimulus package. By end of May the country will need to start getting back to normalcy if the economy has any hope to recover. Economic shutdown til June and July is gonna start pushing into a recession.

You can argue over corona virus statistics all you want. Nobody knows for certain.
Death statistics are based on confirmed cases, which excludes people not tested.
Some deaths have been misdiagnosed to other respiratory complications.
Nobody knows how many people have it, have had it, have died from it, or had it but died from it with other health issues.
Any stats you wanna use are useless.

It’s NOT a 1% infection rate that you have claimed over and over again. We’ve had 685K cases. We have not tested 68 million people. We haven’t even tested 6 million people. The infection rate is much closer to 10% (and probably over) than 1%. The death rate among infected people is 5.2% at the moment. According to experts, infected people with serious symptoms is closer to 20% than 10%, as you suggest. Get your numbers straight.

As for YOUR unsubstantiated 1% death rate, if that were of the entire population that would be 3.3MM dead… If that were 1% of infected, well that’s just WRONG. It’s 5.2% right now.

Well, nobody believed it when they were told that the previous presidential administration was cowtowing to China. I told the nay sayers that they wouldn’t like playing “second fiddle” to China = a belligerent nation. Now, the globalism has raised it’s ugly head and the supply chain for almost everything we need flows through the ChiComs and every filthy disease is traced back to that place. Then to top it off we’re losing our professional sports to this politicking!!! We’ll be in real trouble if they out-source the marijuana industry to china , because the politicians will not be able to have us self-medicate while they sell us out to foreign lands…who, BTW have no MLB, NBA, NHL or NFL

Yeah unfortunately a million deaths could happen in the U.S. Canada is expecting 10-20 times the number of deaths they currently have totaled if restrictions are maintained. Canada was weeks ahead of the U.S. in enforcing restrictions. 10-20 times the current number for the U.S would mean 350,000-700,000 minimum. If restrictions get lifted too soon, 1 million might be a best case.

In fact numbers north of a million deaths in the U.S were projected estimates of a possible outcome if strong measures to stem the spread were not taken. Fortunately they have been not just in the U.S. but in most of the nations of the world, and they have worked, so far. But it’s sadly predictable now that we’re seeing the benefits of doing the right thing that some will say the wrong thing would have been just as good.

Exactly. Mortality isn’t very useful as an indicator of whether the spread is increasing or decreasing now. It tells us what was happening a week or to ago. Even the number of new cases is deceptive since testing is very far from universal. Hospital admissions probably tells us the most. By that measurement we’re seeing evidence of a corner being turned in many parts of the country. The waiting is the hardest part…

Are you the janitor? Just saying you work in medical research doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a statement people make (even when it isn’t true) to try to give validity to their opinion. Just saying 1 Million Americans may die means nothing, over the course of years? Just from this virus? Based on actual science and data, it will be way too many people, but nowhere near 1 million.

Nowhere close on testing, in fact, we are woefully short on any future testing right now. We have virtually no tracing ability to speak of in this country. The neanderthals are already marching on state capitals demanding to no longer be isolated (now they’re the ones we want out and about). Until we can successfully test, trace and isolate, we can not return to any kind of normal. If we try too soon, we will have catastrophic death. There is no model that can predict those numbers because no one is stupid enough to let that happen. Except the neanderthals. And the republicans. And their leader, the big rump. Oh dear, politics. No, truth.

Rather than us speculate, we have the ability to look at countries like South Korea, Japan, & China on how they are handling coming out of the quarantine. They are the guinea pigs, because they are 4-6 weeks ahead of us in the process. We will learn if they reopen too soon and another outbreak happens, then we can’t reopen. If it doesn’t because its more of a seasonal thing, then we will learn that as well.

But as far as anyones opinion here, it doesn’t mean much, because we are basing it on our feelings, not our knowledge. I can understand both sides, when I watch the news, it scares me to death – But in reality they are only focusing on the negative (If it bleeds, it leads). And I can see the business side, because peoples lives are being wrecked.

Dr Birx stated once infected and recovered there is no 100% guarantee that enough anti bodies will be developed in your body to prevent reinfection. For anyone to think mlb will risk getting players, umpires, tv crews etc infected without instant testing and treatments available is not thinking straight. If there is a season, I don’t think there will, all of these medical, logistics and financial issues will have to be solved. This virus has a 4.5% death rate which means for every million infections there will be 45,000 deaths.

We don’t know the true mortality rate yet, but without question it is nowhere close to 4.5%. I have no idea where you came up with that number but I suspect it’s the mortality rate of people who require hospitalization. It could not possibly include the mild and asymptomatic cases, which we know constitute the vast majority of them. This virus is very dangerous for some people, but overall nowhere close to one in 20 who contract it die from it. As for contracting it a second time nothing is guaranteed but the chances of that happening are very small given that the only way our bodies can fight off a virus is by creating antibodies. How long that immunity will last varies from months to years.

No, sorry, it is you are wrong. The mortality rate can be expressed in a number of different ways, but the one you’ve cited (Case Fatality Rate) is deeply flawed by a lack of a count or even an informed estimate of the actual number of cases. To use a baseball analogy, it would be like trying to compute a batting average knowing only the number of base hits but without knowing how many times the batter came to the plate. The best explanation of the problems with the data that I’ve read can be found here:

I also think, in time, the mortality rates will come down, as so many have had C-19 but haven’t been tested. I have about 10 friends all in the same social group in another state (CO) who fit this description, likely had it, haven’t gotten tested. Speaking of testing tho, there is no way baseball or any other “normal” part of life comes back until we have a reliable, valid, nationwide system to test people. At present we’ve tested about 1% of the US population. Without that, we can’t contact trace, we can’t open up MLB in any form, and we really can’t safely, even slowly and in phases, open up the US. If we do, C-19 will come roaring back and then, yes, the numbers will be truly catastrophic (they already are, but if we’re not careful, we could easily add 000s/0000s to the present numbers). The last statement is my opinion. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

There should be a baseball season. Today is April 17th and COVID-19 appears to have peaked earlier than expected. No decisons have to be made yet as we will know much more in 2 weeks. With most Americans back at work next month, I dont see why baseball players wouldnt be allowed to go back to work when they are in the Most Healthy group.
