Orioles Announce Initial 60-Man Player Pool

By George Miller and Anthony Franco | June 28, 2020 at 3:21pm CDT

Today marks the deadline for teams to submit to Major League Baseball their initial spring training player pools, which can comprise up to 60 players. Players are not eligible to participate in either a spring training or regular season game until they are included in the pool. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit. However, players removed from a team’s 60-man (for reasons unrelated to injury, suspension, etc.) must be exposed to other organizations via trade or waivers.

Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.

The Orioles’ initial player pool consists of the following players.

Right-handed pitchers

  • Shawn Armstrong
  • Cody Carroll
  • Miguel Castro
  • Alex Cobb
  • Thomas Eshelman
  • Mychal Givens
  • Eric Hanhold
  • Hunter Harvey
  • David Hess
  • Branden Kline
  • Travis Lakins
  • Chandler Shepherd
  • Kohl Stewart
  • Cole Sulser
  • Dillon Tate
  • Cesar Valdez
  • Hector Velazquez
  • Asher Wojciechowski

Left-handed pitchers

  • Ty Blach
  • Richard Bleier
  • Paul Fry
  • Wade LeBlanc
  • John Means
  • Tommy Milone
  • Tanner Scott
  • Rob Zastryzny

Catchers

  • Bryan Holaday
  • Pedro Severino
  • Chance Sisco
  • Austin Wynns

Infielders

  • Hanser Alberto
  • Chris Davis
  • Dilson Herrera
  • Jose Iglesias
  • Richie Martin
  • Renato Nunez
  • Rio Ruiz
  • Pat Valaika
  • Andrew Velazquez
  • Stevie Wilkerson

Outfielders

  • Austin Hays
  • Anthony Santander
  • Dwight Smith Jr.
  • DJ Stewart

thats a fairly thin OF group, even with a few of the INF guys being potential backup OFs.

more like 5 with Wilkerson, but you make a good point. my guess is they may add one or more later as they need. that pitching group is fairly full and i dont see all of them making it through the year on the 60.

Apparently people can’t count. This is only a list of 44…not 60. Don’t get stuck on the lack of OF. They will add more.

you expect everyone to count? its not like its a list of “5 guys” with only 4 named. the article seems to suggest the list is complete.

They only did 44 in order to make a lot of waiver claims/low level trades. Then they will fill in their own prospects later.

Other teams aren’t expected to submit a full 60, but this will most likely be the lowest number for sure

Dark side, good lord you are hard headed. If you get a 60 man roster and they only list 44; that leaves 16 spots. 16 spots that they can add to at any time they wish.

yeah…because they were bad then and had to work their way back to being good. are you supposed to pick “good” or “bad” labels for each team for an entire decade and stick with them?

Those of you that proclaim that the O’s will always suck.. well like the saying goes for your team what comes around .. goes around. The O’s will rise to be a annual contender if not a championship team before too long.
