Why not $180m for Realmuto? Those same Phillies gave Bryce Harper $25.4m/yr through his age 38 season. Realmuto has outproduced Harper on a WAR basis in each of the last 2 seasons and at that AAV, $180m would only take Realmuto through his age 36 season. Plus he did talk about wanting to raise the bar for catchers in MLB.

Because catchers don’t age as well as corner outfielders.

I don’t think Middleton is quite as committed to winning as I had assumed prior to the 2019 season. The 2019 off season was odd for the Phillies, in that, they gave Wheeler the huge contract, while leaving many areas of need unfilled.
Because of that, an extension for Realmuto makes less sense now.
I envisioned their starting and relief pitching to be in better shape at this point. The second and third base situation is up in the air and I don’t see a viable option for everyday center field duties.

Middleton has been very dedicated on spending for the team. The problem is the Phillies drafting and player development has been awful. No team can afford to buy every player for their roster Just look at the mid 2000s Yankees as a perfect example. The rebuild should have produced more than Nola, Kingery, and a questionable Hoskins. They drafted 4 straight years in the top 10 including 1st and 3rd and drafted Cornelius Randolph, Mikey Moniak, Adam Haseley, and Alec Bohm. Only 1 of them has the potential to be anything more than average.
