Latest On Rick Renteria

By Jeff Todd | July 27, 2020 at 8:22pm CDT

8:22pm: Fortunately, Renteria’s test came back negative, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets. The White Sox expect him to return during their Tuesday-Thursday series in Cleveland.

4:22pm: White Sox manager Rick Renteria will be away from the team for at least one game. Per a club announcement, he is undergoing testing for COVID-19 after experiencing a cough and nasal congestion.

Indications are that Renteria is only experiencing mild symptoms at the moment. Hopefully that will remain the case, whatever the underlying cause. The team says Renteria is in isolation and staying away from the team “out of an abundance of caution.”

Bench coach Joe McEwing will handle managerial duties for the time being. If the testing comes back negative and Renteria feels up to it, perhaps he’ll be back without missing much action.

He is a very underrated manager. He is excellent at developing young players.

I am a Cubs fan, and he did get short changed no doubt, only managed one season but I thought he did a real solid job, but I don;t blame the FO for what they did, they had a chance to get Joe Maddon and they did, if it was not for that Renteria would of never been fired.

Let’s hope it is nothing. If its something, it should be a wake up call to the players to be more careful around teammates and management

Agreed on this. I got allergies for the first time in my life this past March (of all times to get them!). Gave me a scare, but I’ve had a mild cough and some light congestion off and on since then, for which I was tested twice – both negative.

People forget that other things can cause these symptoms, too, which is probably why 95% of people test negative for COVID-19: Something had to make them feel like they should get tested.

Damn. You got tested twice for Covid-19 because you had a light case of the sniffles. You have psychological issues. If you are demanding all these tests for something that happens to everybody, you need to quarantine yourself from life. People like you should not own a gun.

As long as you acknowledge that the virus is real. So many people on here want to minimize the effects of the virus.

          @Howie415,
My doctor was concerned enough for me to be tested twice, about a month apart. I didn’t “demand” anything.

As for the psychological issues, you’re right. I’m a life-long sufferer of anxiety and depression, and I can tell you the last 5 months have not been a picnic. At the same time, I’ve done my best to go on living best I can, while wearing a mask and not getting myself into situations where distancing isn’t possible. Above all, I’m getting help for the mental illness that I carry, as it’s all I can do for myself.

Clearly, you do not understand what it’s like to live with mental illness, but I don’t hold it against you. It’s simply a matter of you not knowing what it’s like to walk in my shoes.

Actually, I do. Everybody else’s anxiety is making it harder on me. People are not taking it seriously. The hardest part about Covid-19 is people diminishing its impact. When I see armchair doctors citing statistics, I become very leery. You don’t know what symptoms Renteria had. Speculation is terrible.

I think we’re in agreement here. People do not take this seriously enough and it’s infuriating that they’re thinking only of themselves. Unfortunately, we’re going to have live with these people until the treatments improve and a vaccine is widely available. These are the sources of this particular anxiety for me.

I’m trying to go with the frame of mind that I can’t control things outside of me. I’m trying to take it all one day at a time. I’m also trying to get outside as much as possible and soak up the sun, Vitamin D.

Did people hear about the Clippers player who went to his father’s funeral then to a strip club?

These players are in their 20s. They don’t think about consequences and this season wont progress unless they do and older people are placed at risk.

If players act irresponsibly, the season wont last long.

Having to depend on the controlling of the Libido of a 2o something year old for the existence of a baseball season is not a bet you are likely to win.

@Halo, I don’t disagree with what you posted, but it’s way simpler than libido (a factor for sure). Over the last few days watching some of the games, I see lots of good practices (social distancing, in dugout masks, no high-fiving etc) and some really bad practices (high fives, close contact with each other, masks off in dugout, post-home run celebrations ….). I didn’t see what the Marlins were doing but it’s clear it doesn’t take much to spread this thing like wildfire. I hope all those testing positive are ok, and I’m skeptical that it won’t all blow up. Ugh. Feel better Rick!

If players get this, it’s going to spread. I don’t see how it can’t.

Unbelievable they have a season with so few off days.

I said this weeks ago. This should have been a 45 game 7 week season. With teams playing five game series against one opponent and two off days a week.

Maybe then it could have been controlled.

If we postpone every game if someone isn’t feeling well, this season won’t last long. I understand precautions, but you can get a sore throat and congestion from having a freakin fan on while you sleep. This isn’t good.

Man, it is so gonna suck if the season is cancelled so all of the “I told you so!” guys are actually right lol. (even if they really *didn’t* “tell us so”)

Not all, but many of them are… trying. To put it in the nicest way possible.

Anyone who thought this season would happen without incident has been sitting at home the past few months. Those of us remaining productive realize full well how things that used to be easily accomplished are just simply often not easy anymore.

I applaud MLB’s effort to have a season.
