Brewers Designate Brock Holt For Assignment

By TC Zencka | August 22, 2020 at 12:02pm CDT

The Milwaukee Brewers designated Brock Holt for assignment and selected Jace Peterson from their alternate site, the team announced.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Holt signed this past offseason and the Brewers have a club option for a second year. That said, the long-time Red Sox utility man had gotten off to a horrendous start. Through 36 plate appearances, Holt was hitting just .100/.222/.100 with 9 strikeouts and without an extra-base hit. The career .269/.338/.370 hitter obviously can do better, but in a shortened season, the Brewers clearly decide they did not have time to wait for a turnaround.

Holt signed for a $3.25MM guarantee after spending the past seven seasons with the Red Sox. The expectation was that Holt would fill in around the infield, but the Brewers aren’t short on other options – Peterson included – and Holt simply wasn’t hitting.

Peterson, 30, stands to replace Holt both on the roster and in his role. Capable of playing just about anywhere on the diamond, Peterson has bounced around, but appeared in the majors every season since 2014. The Brewers will be his fifth team, after the Padres, Braves, Orioles, and Yankees.

Bring him home!! We’re gonna need INF’s in any event. Moreland gets shipped out and Chavis fills for him… need an extra body anyways.

Would love for a reunion but he likely won’t clear waivers. My guess is Boston passes which would be stupid since they’re under the threshold. Give the Brockstar and fans an early Xmas present.

Yahoomlb@, I’m just referring to pashik and “bring back brockstar” a thousand times a day. You’re being sarcastic I assume? Sorry for asking, a lot of things go over my head. I don’t want to miss out on a compliment if one was intended LOL. “Only one” reference makes that not very likely though 🙂

Why because a player who surpassed all expectations, was great in the clubhouse, did community charitable work and wanted to return was forced to look elsewhere is still appreciated by a fan base not even a year later? If he was replaced by a hotshot rookie or another seasoned vet, it would have been easier to accept. Peralta? Like the tuna commercial, “sorry Charlie”. Not buying into the get over it argument. Sometimes ownership needs to hear from the fans.

The 32-year-old Holt signed a one-year, $3.25-million contract with the Brewers during February. He went just 3-for-30 (.100) with a .222 on-base percentage, .100 slugging percentage, no extra-base hits and one RBIs in 16 games. He struck out nine times and walked four times.

In such a short season with a close race, you really can’t afford to let guys like this work their way out of a slump. Don’t fault them at all for cutting bait so quickly.

they actually never gave him a chance to play. He is a platoon player that hits right handed pitching. Somebody will pick him up as a playoff depth piece. It probably came down to Sogard or Holt and they liked Sogard defense better

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees DFA Sanchez in the off season vs. pay him in year 2 of arbitration. His current salary is $5M and arbitration will raise that to $8M+ even with the bad season he is having. The Yankees have 9 or 10 arbitration eligible players including big names like Judge, Torres, Urshela, Frazier, etc.. and they will be way over the $208M CBT if they sign them all, making them 3 time offenders. They also need to sign at least 1 if not 2 starting pitchers with Happ, Tanaka and Paxton all moving to free agency this season. Severino won’t be ready until late May or June and German will still have about 20 games to serve on his suspension…if he even wants to come back. Yankees really need to win it all this year as this offseason will be very challenging for them.

The Yankees can blow through the tax and it won’t matter at all. For how much money that team makes every year a few million in taxes is like pennies for them. Honestly for a big market team, Red Sox fans should be offended at what they’re putting on the field in Boston. I can’t see the Yankees doing that. I think you’re crazy if you really think this is a one year window for the Yankees. You kinda sound like a bitter Red Sox fan with a lot of wishful thinking… Yanks probably end up resigning Tanaka anyway. With cole as the number one and severino coming back before the all star break they really only need one other middle of the rotation guy and they’re fine for next year.

The Brew Crew is a mess, and the boy wonder Stearns made it.
Holt, Gyorko, Sogard, Smoak, L. Morrison, Brett Anderson, R Healy, = piss poor off season.
Good thing it’s only 60 games, otherwise the Crew could’ve lost 90+ this year.
Let’s sign some more 32+ yeasr old journeymen has beens to $2-$4M contracts

Many pointed this out during the offseason and were vilified for it. Stearns showed his true colors and is perhaps the most overrated GM. His only saving grace is the fact his organization won’t break the bank, using the lack of funds as an excuse for any shortcomings despite the fact his overpaid for over half the guys you mentioned.

      Reply

Hard to say Stearns overpaid for anybody making under $4M on a 1-year deal. Settling is more accurate. It’s not like if only he didn’t sign these retreads he’d of had the money for Grandal, Keuchel, $50M+ etc. stars. If there’s a knock against Stearns, it’s that he sold off the farm to stay afloat as an above-average but hardly elite contender. But settling for discount FAs and praying for lucky returns is just what limited payrolls have to do. Blame ownership if you think more should have been spent. I guarantee Stearns woulda been happy to throw more dough around if allowed.

It isn’t hard because I just did. Brewers needed a SS, Catcher and maybe a SP. Got Narvaez, ok fine.

Then spent over 7-mil on Garcia, 5-mil on Anderson, 4-mil twice on two bench players in Smoak and Sogard. Other money sprinkled that wasn’t necessary. Didn’t fully address the needs. That’s code for “we aren’t ready to win”. Then extended Yelich. Good chance Brewers look to deal him in 2022.

Ok i wouldn’t have dfa’d him. I would have sent Sogard, Smoak and Gyorko first. Clean house and go with a bunch of young guys. Use the rest of the season to give Nottingham, Taylor and Erceg time and experience. Heck maybe even trade Gamel and bring Ray up. im not giving up on the season at all but I think we could still make the playoffs but do it with players that are hungry.

VanMeter still has minor league options so has value long term. There’s no one on the Reds worth DFA’ing to make room for a utility guy who can’t play SS. Or pitch out of the bullpen.

He was the glue that kept the Red Sox locker room together after Pedroia left. While I’d love to see him come back, I don’t think Chaim wants him here. He wants to build his own team and unfortunately he doesn’t think too highly of the Brock Star. With that said, if he clears waivers I’d love to see Boston replace Lin or Peraza with him, but it might take some player/owner intervention to get him back here.

Either of those players are a bust at 2nd base. The Brockstar brings more to the team then just play, as Dorothy said. IMO I think it would be a moral booster to bring him back where he belongs.
