DJ LeMahieu Leaves Game Due To Thumb Sprain

By Mark Polishuk | August 15, 2020 at 9:28pm CDT

9:28PM: LeMahieu is undergoing an MRI and CT scan but x-rays were negative on his thumb, Boone told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and other reporters.  The injured list “could be” a possibility, Boone said.

8:28PM: Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu left tonight’s game due to what the team announced as a sprained left thumb.  LeMahieu will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.

The injury seemed to occur during a fourth-inning at-bat, as LeMahieu was visited by trainers after swinging at a Nathan Eovaldi pitch.  LeMahieu finished his plate appearance and then played second base in the top of the fifth, though not before another on-field visit from trainers and manager Aaron Boone.  LeMahieu finished the inning but Tyler Wade replaced him at the keystone in the sixth inning.

After an injury-plagued 2019 season, the Yankees have again been hit with several notable health problems this season, including with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton currently sidelined.  Losing LeMahieu would be another significant blow, as the second baseman entered Saturday’s action with a .429/.474/.557 slash line over his first 76 plate appearances.  Leading the AL in batting average, OBP, and hits thus far, LeMahieu is on pace to top even his outstanding numbers from his 2019 debut season in the Bronx.

Wade and Thairo Estrada would be the top choices at second base if LeMahieu is out, plus veteran infielder Matt Duffy is at the Yankees’ alternate training site.  While it’s too early to know whether LeMahieu will even require an IL placement let alone miss significant time, the lack of second base depth represents a potential area of focus for New York at the trade deadline should LeMahieu indeed face any sort of extended absence.

Yankees aside, this has got to be one of the worst Red Sox teams of all time. I knew we were going to be bad this year, but this is completely abysmal. We just got done giving up nearly 50 runs in a series to the Rays and now we’ve given up 10+ runs in two days against the Yankees. We make the Orioles look like a playoff team right now.

I know it’s not all Chaim Bloom’s fault, but he has stripped this team of its dignity. It was right to trade Betts and obviously he can’t help the injuries, but considering how he’s letting minor league pitchers take the mound each day only to lose their confidence is terrible. The low risk high reward deals Bloom has made are more like low risk low reward because they just aren’t made with reason or talent. Ron Roenicke is a bad manager- he’s too soft and can’t keep a consistent lineup. I don’t know what Bloom’s philosohpy is moving forward. I can understand stripping and starting a new, but at least put major league pitchers on the mound and do a full rebuild (not this halfway stuff).

We are in for a long fall and a questionable future.

The confidence issue might be legit but if ever there was a time to get young guys experience against MLB talent in a meaningless situation, this is it.

Im curious what deals you think bloom made that were expected to be low risk and high reward. He made moves to fill out the roster cheaply. I’m a Yankees fan so I have no dog in this fight, but he was directed by ownership to strip payroll. He did.

They were probably never going to be able to resign mookie, so they made what most people consider to be a pretty good deal.

As far as I can tell, the Sox farm system isn’t very good and no one should be mad about that as the moves that emptied the farm got them another ring.

Time to restock and rebuild the big club and wait out the bad contracts.

In a way you’re right, but Bloom said in March he wanted to be competitive this season, which was baffling. Peraza was much unneeded and a downgrade from a fan favorite in Holt. The other moves, as you said, filled out the roster, but they didn’t meet Bloom’s “competitive” statement. Whether he said that just to keep fans interested, I don’t know. Even if we had Sale and E-Rod we wouldn’t be able to compete with the Yankees, so Bloom’s former statements don’t match the feeling of the current team.

Other deals Bloom made to get pitchers like Covey and Godley are low risk low reward deals. They had virtually no way of working out and were made in desperation. Yes, filling the roster, okay, but does it really add any depth to make them later in the season if they’re completely ineffective? Godley made sense but he’s god awful and not an upgrade we needed because we are already bad.

I agree. Team was expected to be bad but awful im sure that wasn’t what was hoped. Im sorry but Martin perez is not a savior. Neither is the dumpster trash they have picked up along the way. But, because of covid the betts deal, which i was in favor of at the time, looks better and better given that price opted out(saving 6 mil) and mookie didn’t show interest in signing a deal at all. pre covid Betts was testing the market after he was smart to take the deal he did. and the Sox save money on both and get top tier prospects. thats a win even though no one saw the pandemic coming. other than that even with sale and e-rod the back end of the rotation was lacking… as far as roenicke, he just does what he’s told imo… try your best with garbage. also my 2 cents the pen over achieved last year and wasn’t even that good to begin with save for workman who should be trade bait…

Fair points, but while fans would love for the GM to come out and say they’re going to stink, no one is going to actually say that, especially in New England. I live in CT and went to college in Mass. New England fans have to be the most brutal I have seen. They trashed Nomar on his way and are doing the same to Brady and gronk as we speak, along with countless others in between. It is what it is, but with the other New England teams doing well, the Sox couldn’t say they were going to be terrible p, even if everyone already knew it. Not signing holt was a head scratcher given what he ultimately received, but who knows what went on behind closed doors.

This years Sox team was never built to win it all or really make a run in the postseason. I think that’s a given. But what I will say in fairness is that if Sale hadn’t gotten injured (and had he been actually healthy in prime form, obviously not last years version) you at least had a true ace. Neither Evoldi nor erod are great but they’re both legitimate #2/#3 pitchers and perez is an adequate #4/5 which would make an at least respectable rotation. Certainly not great but they’d win some games. In a year where more than half the teams make the playoffs I could see the Red Sox at least competing for a spot with that. The pen would still blow a lot of leads and the lineup obviously is less intimidating without Mookie but they wouldn’t be this unbelievably awful…

You’re right about them picking up players in desperation but the players they decided to pick up made little sense. At the very least they could have grabbed waiver wire players with potential. Look what the Padres did with Brad Hand and Kirby Yates, the Yanks with Urshela and Voit (I know he wasn’t a waiver claim), the Orioles with Alberto, etc. Enyel De Los Santos and Nick Williams were just DFAed by the Phils, Jorge Lopez, hell why not give Greg Bird a shot? Chances are none of them will pan out but they’re cheap and as stated with the examples above, you never know which guys just need that one coach for it all to click.

The Red Sox saved 6M this year on Price. They still have to pay him 16M for the next 3 years. Price was not considered high risk so his contracts tolls.

There’s a difference between being realistic and outwardly saying we will be competitive. They don’t have to say we will stink, but at least have a realistic viewpoint to give to fans.

For what it’s worth, the Orioles have made themselves look like a playoff team. Heat on them all u want but they swept the Rays and have dominated the Nats. They have beat some legit pitchers in the process. The Red Sox pitching is terrible, the Os pitching is at least mediocre

Hilarious that you start out not blaming the GM,but then blame him that he striped them of their dignity.
Then protect him for trading Betts & Price, then blame the manager for pitching what was given to him.
You never offer a solution. They could have traded young talent for another pitcher.
They are resetting their cap, just like all the teams.
You’re the type that says their hungry, complains that their starving, but doesn’t know what to eat, gets in the car and passes 10 places to stop at and still isn’t sure.

      Give your head a shake.

In a way you’re right. I shouldn’t have worded as such. I don’t know what to expect from Bloom yet, its too early to tell. Pieces have to come together to fully determine the outcome.

      The Sux are set at DH,LF,CF,RF,3B,SS,C-you needs a 2B & 1B…and pitching.
I like the young OF from LA & AB & JBJ Thats a solid OF.
DP has limped for three years, why did DD grab a 2B? That LA trade should have been for the OF they got and Gavin Lux. 2B solved.

So Yanks and Red Sox never cheated? Ironic since Yanks fans constantly complain about Astros using the Beltran system that was set in place with Yanks.

Your definition of “cheated “ is a bit vague. Yanks never did what the Astros and Sox did. To say otherwise is pure conjecture or hyperbole.

Clepto – Yank4 was speaking of depth, but depth in the outfield for Judge and replacing a player like DJ with D, bat, and at middle infield, is not nearly the same thing. Honestly I think we all expect Judge and Stanton to go down every season, not DJ.

Yea Boone not the most honest of managers. Somehow his day to days seem to turn into lengthy IL stints. Judge pulled to rest, on IL 2 days later. Crist have some integrity Boone. Don’t feed Yankee fans continuous B/S.

yeah gotta wonder if Boone is the right manager for a team with as many injury issues as this one. maybe he’s not being cautious enough with their injuries and that causes them to lose more time.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I want transparency in a baseball manager. I trust Boone as far as I can throw him. The Judge thing is a fiasco. It’s not fair for him to with hold info like this. What does he have to lose by informing his fans and keeping them from worrying. Besides the covering up, Lemahieu has played every game since opening day, IIRC Judge had like one day off before his injury, Stanton had two days off at the most. He’s not doing much to keep this fragile team healthy. Plus his bullpen management is suspect at best. Last night we were up 8-3 and he decided to bring Adam Ottavino in the game. No reason for it. It makes me wonder if ditching Girardi was the right call.

Have the Yankees ever actually had a test come back they didn’t say was “negative” – DJ ‘s thumb could be severed and they’d still say it’s a mild injury and he actually wants to be in the lineup today but he may miss a day or two but only as a precaution
