Dodgers To Option Gavin Lux Back To Taxi Squad

By Mark Polishuk | August 27, 2020 at 9:39pm CDT

9:39PM: Lux will be optioned back to the Dodgers’ taxi squad, Roberts told Gurnick (Twitter link) and other media after the game.

5:45PM: The Dodgers have called up infielder Gavin Lux from their alternate training site, with Lux set to serve as the extra 29th man for Game 2 of today’s doubleheader with the Giants.

Lux will appear on the Los Angeles roster for the first time this season, after he was somewhat surprisingly not included on the club’s roster for its July opener.  Lux did miss part of Summer Camp for unexplained reasons, and while there was speculation that Lux may have been kept in the minors for service-time reasons, manager Dave Roberts explained in early August that the Dodgers didn’t “feel he’s ready right now.”

“It was a short ramp-up for Gavin and he wasn’t right mechanically,” Roberts told MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick and other media on August 5.  “And he knows that, we know that.  He’s still getting there at [alternative training site] USC, getting at-bats daily, it’s coming.  I see video every day, it’s getting better.”

Roberts said at the time that Lux would only be called up to the Dodgers on an everyday basis, so though the “29th man” designation could imply some fluidity with Lux’s status, it would seem like the star prospect will now be part of the team’s regular mix.  Lux is in tonight’s starting lineup as a second baseman, which was also his position during his 23-game debut with Los Angeles last season.

Corey Seager obviously has Lux’s normal minor league position of shortstop covered at the MLB level, so Lux now looks to be the first-choice option at the keystone.  Enrique Hernandez, Max Muncy, and Chris Taylor have split time at second base this season with Hernandez getting the bulk of the playing time at that particular position, though all three players have been deployed elsewhere around the diamond given the Dodgers’ penchant for versatility.  With the DH spot in play for the 2020 season, Roberts should be able to find enough at-bats to keep everyone satisfied and rested as the Dodgers are already essentially in tune-up mode for the postseason.

Lux hit .240/.305/.400 over 82 PA with the Dodgers last season, plus an .856 OPS over 10 postseason PA.  A consensus top-five prospect in baseball coming into the 2020 campaign, Lux has dominated minor league pitching since being selected 20th overall in the 2016 draft, and now aims to be the next homegrown Dodgers prospect to find stardom in the majors.

How does this affect service time cause this must be the only reason he’s not at the mlb level

You don’t get service time as the extra man for a double header. The Dodgers also don’t play service time games, so he probably legit was not ready.

During summer camp, he was truly awful; completely out of sync, both in the box and on the field. Service time had nothing to do with it.

He either had Covid or simply didn’t think the season was gonna happen, but either way h e was a mess mechanically in summer ST. He was not major league ready

Last I checked Kike was leading the league in DRS, largely at 2B, and CT3 has been a great sub This year… they weren’t gonna bring him up till he was ready. They didn’t need him. If they wanted to play service time games he wouldn’t have been called up last year when they won 106. I just don’t buy that argument against LAD. They don’t play those games

Except they did need him last year. Muncy was their 2b and was thought to be lost for Sept. It made sense to bring him up then because the rosters had expanded and the role guys weren’t performing. This year, he was off and hasn’t been needed yet.

You must have a very loose definition of “opinion piece”

The post about the postponed games gives an extremely brief summary of why the players decided not to play and doesn’t editorialize about it.

Or it’s a baseball site and politics don’t need to be part of it

They reported facts+ quotes and that’s it. You’re a fool if you think that’s an editorial

All they said is games are canceled and why

It’s factual information about baseball. On a baseball site that reports about ANY canceled games

You just want to make it political to then complain it’s political. You’re showing exactly why they closed the comments. YOU want to make it political when all THEY are doing is reporting facts+ quotes. Get over yourself

They dont want to moderate the chats.

Players can do what they want. You’d think for a sport that’s taken a nose dive off a cliff in viewership for their most important games, world series, you’d think they’d appreciate the uptick in viewership due to covid and try to continue that trend.

Nope, let’s willingly not play games after working so hard to have a season and disregard the sacrifices players made to have a season. That works too.

Tim Dierkes is a coward. He has writers post politically charged garbage stories on a BASEBALL trade rumors website and then proceeds to close comments. Keep up the daily begging for paid subscriptions Tim because I predict you will need every dime you squeeze out of your readers in the very near future. I have been on this site since the beginning and I’m disgusted with the direction he has taken it in recent years.

But, hey, I have a choice as to whether I read it or not. So long…

Bollocks. People only clutch at the “politically charged” narrative, because it’s far easier to come up with than having to face their own personal prejudices towards the issues at hand.

“Games postponed in protest” isn’t political – it’s a simple statement explaining the actions people have taken. It’s news. However, the content of that news stirs up emotion, and people on here have continually shown an inability to handle emotion.

First, understand what “political” actually is – and then you’ll realize you’re talking apples, when this is oranges. This isn’t Trump, this isn’t Biden, this is human.

You can get around the ads with an app called Blokada that blocks web advertisements on all websites on phones.

They have chats already. Member only chats doesn’t really move the needle.

Trades that should happen. I mean, mlb network already does that. Plus other baseball blogs.

Power rankings? Other baseball enthusiasts websites do that for free and back it up with stats and such

People can pay it if they want. But for a lot of people lower the price or create unique features and content.

The expansion draft. Perfect member only content.

Those articles of how star players found their way to a team through history of trades and draft picks. Perfect member only content.

Here’s one for free on the house. Undo a trade for each team that impacted their roster in a significant way and create a revisionist piece. For instance, suppose the padres didn’t trade Trea Turner. Do they draft Edwarsds. Do they draft Abrams. Do they trade Urias sooner. Does Cronenworth get a shot or even become a padre? Do they trade for Grisham if they moved him to CF?

0-3 2Ks. I only caught one AB and it wasn’t great That’s not gonna force Kike to the bench with him playing as well as he is, especially defense

Granted. The NL mvp just got his swing back a week ago. And I still think there’s more to Lux’s offseason that is being kept private. So hard to be long term worried about Lux. Would be nice if he was mid season form, but he’s just not at this point

Agreed. Something wasn’t right with Lux in that pre-season game. As fans, we don’t need to know everything. It’s not like the Dodgers need him at this moment as they have a run differential of plus-86 through 33 games. Next best are the White Sox and Athletics at plus-41 each. The Dodgers are ahead of both teams combined.
