Stephen Strasburg To Make 2020 Debut Sunday

By Connor Byrne | August 7, 2020 at 4:25pm CDT

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg will make his 2020 debut Sunday against the Orioles, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Manager Dave Martinez indicated the Nationals are hopeful that Strasburg will give them 75 to 80 pitches in his first start of the season.

Strasburg has been on the shelf with a nerve issue in his right hand, which is certainly not the way he or the Nats expected him to begin the seven-year, $245MM contract they re-signed him to last offseason. Injuries have often been a problem for Strasburg, whose career began with great fanfare in 2010, but he stayed healthy in 2019 en route to a 209-inning campaign and a 3.32 ERA/3.25 FIP with 10.81 K/9 and 2.41 BB/9. He put the cherry on top with a marvelous playoff performance that concluded with a title for the team and a World Series MVP for himself.

This year’s Nationals have come out of the gates slowly at 4-5, but a few of the starters they’ve used – Max Scherzer, Patrick Corbin, Austin Voth and Erick Fedde – have done well to prevent runs. Scherzer left his start Wednesday with a hamstring injury, but the three-time Cy Young winner is optimistic he’ll make his scheduled start, per Camerato.

Subject to change is right. Nutty little season we have.

You sure you expect our teams to form the top 2? Both the Mets and the Braves have gotten pounded this year. Meanwhile the Nationals are looking more and more complete with Soto returning as well as Strasburg and Sherzers injury being superficial or close to it.

I say this as the Braves almost have no starting pitching left and the Mets are 5-8. If you think the Braves can stay in 1st with that and the Mets can emerge from being 5-8 to take second place than how crazy is it really that I might predict a turn around for the Nats?

I’m not saying you’re wrong. But you were making it seem like Nats have a way higher chance than Mets. That’s simply omg isn’t true. I still think the marlins finish last and all other 4 teams have a shot. Just bc I make a prediction doesn’t me I’d be surprised if Mets finish 4th

How you have the Mets second right now is beyond me. Braves, Marlins, Nats, Phillies, Mets. Mets have looked abysmal. Alonso can’t deal with pitchers adjusting to him. It’s early, he’ll come around, but it’s only a 60 game season so it may be too late.

A Mets fan riveted to the Nats score tonight. While no Nats or Braves fans could care less who (or if) The Mets are playing tonite — that says it all. Oh btw, the Mets are finishing 2nd this season. Has everyone written that pearl of wisdom down?

I’m a Braves fan and I responded metsfan that the score against the Orioles is almost inconsequential. At this point, the Nats have Soto and Strasburg back. Also, Sherzers injury seems pretty insignificant so it looks like the Nationals have the most complete team.

This could change later because this season has had many shifts in expectations already but otherwise, I don’t see how the Nationals aren’t the current favorite despite having a worse record than the Braves.

Braves injuries are killer and perhaps kill their championship hopes, but they are still a division winning team.

In this division this year they might be. This season will sink or swim on the starting pitching. Right now, the Braves rotation is very talented but also very combustible.

Mets taking second, that is like saying the Pirates are going to win the division.

Metsfan22 is a well established troll. Claimed that Scherzer “was not an ace” on the recent Scherzer thread. The clown will likely claim Soto is going to be DFA’d soon. All he does is waste people’s time.

Sherzer isn’t a ace. He can’t even tie degroms shoes lol. You’re going to the playoffs?? With that horrible lineup??? Lol! Enjoy last place. You’ll be there for the next 5 years once the marlins bring up their farm.

Suggesting Scherzer is not an ace is the equivalent of saying you are not a troll. Well, perhaps the Mets will one day shed their rep for being choking losers. Going on what 34 years since your last title? When is that choking dogs of a team of yours going to finally grow a pair and win a ring? In the meantime, happy trolling to you and yours,

I meant A+ ace. For sure he is a Soroka type ace… I meant a ace that could carry a team in the playoffs. He isn’t that anymore. He pitches a playoffs game a he easily gives up 3 to a good team

In your dreams. In 30IP in the 2019 playoffs he had a 2.39 ERA against the best teams in the NL. Your comedy is off the charts.

Guess you have ADD, so let me repeat: Perhaps the Mets will one day shed their rep for being choking losers. Going on what 34 years since your last title? Your answer has alot in common with that embarrassing “performance” by the Mutts last night. Both are just plain ole wrong.

Cespedes. Stroman. Who’s gonna be next to jump from that sinking ship ? At this rate, your SS might be inserted into the regular rotation.
