Tigers Claim Dereck Rodriguez

By Steve Adams | August 31, 2020 at 1:32pm CDT

The Tigers announced Monday that they’ve claimed righty Dereck Rodriguez from the Giants, who’d designated him for assignment over the weekend. He’s been optioned to the team’s alternate training site.

Rodriguez, the son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez, will get a new opportunity with an organization for which his father starred from 2004-08. The right-hander went from minor league signee to breakout rotation member with San Francisco in 2018 when he turned in 118 1/3 frames of 2.81 ERA ball, but he’s gone considerably backwards since that excellent rookie effort. Dating back to the 2019 season, Rodriguez has pitched to an ugly 5.94 ERA with 23 home runs and 39 walks in 103 innings pitched.

It’s a bit puzzling to give up on him so quickly when not that long ago he looked very promising. But he’s really struggling, so cut bait I guess

In 2018, he was a breath of fresh air for the G-men and fans. After that it was painful. Inconsistent, walks, often missed his target, his confidence was shot. Fans wondered is he a starter, long term relief, a closer? They tried it all. It became Chuck-N-Duck! Hopefully D-Rod will find himself and help the Tigers. He’s a good guy and helps the community!

Have you watched him pitch at all in the past two seasons? He’s a soft-throwing righty who couldn’t strike guys out.

His 2018 season was littered with bad peripheral numbers and there’s a really good reason Zaidi shuffled him up and down from the minors: he’s just not very good.

Maybe Detroit will help him. But I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I was going to say much the same thing, but a lot softer. Nevertheless, I hope he can find a way to regain some of his footing.

Nice grab for a Tigers team that can use any help they can get. Teams luck out all the time. He’s definitely worth a chance

But he won more titles in Florida?

Kinda hoped the Jays could add to their MLB sons collection!

Mr. Zaidi what’s the deal? I thought you’re rebuilding?? You’re trying to tell us nobody made a decent offer for anyone, Gausman, Yaz, Solano, Belt or even Panda?? If you decided you think this team is capable of making a run why not add a piece or two for money? Heck Pillar was there for the taking SMH.
