White Sox Ian Hamilton Out With Shoulder Soreness

By TC Zencka | August 15, 2020 at 9:00am CDT

The Chicago White Sox have made a number of roster moves. Reliever Ian Hamilton has been placed on the injured list with shoulder soreness, while Leury Garcia moves to the 45-day IL. Bernardo Flores and Cheslor Cuthbert are getting the call to join the major-league team, per The Athletic’s James Fegan (via Twitter).

Garcia held a significant role in the early going for the Southsiders, but he is out until October with a torn ligament in his thumb. He started the year at second before sliding to short to cover for Tim Anderson’s IL stint. Across 16 games, the veteran Garcia held the line with a triple slash of .271/.317/.441.

Hamilton, 25, projects for a high-leverage role in the Chicago bullpen at some point in the future, but he’ll have to stay healthy first. In four appearances this season, he allowed a pair of runs across 4 innings, though he walked 5 in that span. Hamilton had an exceptionally rough 2019, first injuring his shoulder in a car accident in March, and later taking a line drive to the jaw that ended his season in June. Listed by MLB.com as Chicago’s #18-ranked prospect, Hamilton can hit triple digits on the radar gun with a sinking fastball, but for now, an overabundance of caution is understandable given the 2019 season Hamilton endured.

Flores’ stay won’t be long, as he’s joining the White Sox as the 29th man for today’s doubleheader, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. To see the full advantage of the roster move, the lefty Flores should have a better chance than not of seeing action out of the bullpen sometime during the twin bill. The 24-year-old has appeared in 3 games for the White Sox this season, tossing 5 innings and allowing just a pair of earned runs.

Cuthbert is a corner infielder formerly of the Kansas City Royals. This is his second call-up of the season, the first resulting in just a single at-bat. Over six seasons in KC, Cuthbert slashed .250/.300/.378 across 1,160 plate appearances.

      I’m sure he will be healthy enough to coach by 2032.

        That’s also the same year the Padres will finally be able to compete as that’s when they’ll shed their terrible contracts, right?

        Hosmer is amazing! But somehow is .730 OPS with the Padres is overshadowed by Machado’s .790. Studs making only $50M per year.

          Psh. 2032? Try 2302.

          Thanks for Fernando Tatis Jr though. Hope you enjoyed James Shields as much as we did.

          That trade wouldn’t have happened if San Diego hadn’t hidden medical records on James Shields, Pomeranz, and Kirby Yates in 2016. Tatis Jr plays for the Padres because of fraud, and it sucks to see cheaters prosper in life

        2032 sounds like a possibility, lol. Chisox haven’t been .500 for about 10 years. They are verrrryyy carefully approaching this rebuild. Now with a couple injuries and a poor defense, they have another excuse to enter their tank mode.

          Approaching the rebuild “verrrryyy carefully”? They legit tried signing Machado two years ago (thank God they didn’t!), Wheeler this past offseason, and then ended up signing Keuchel+Grandal+EE+Chisek+locked up almost all of their young talent.

          And poor defense? Please elaborate.

          Sounds like you’re full of dogsh1t.

          That “poor defense” that ranks 13th best in the league… 7th highest position player WAR and 16th highest for pitching, despite a comically bad first trip through the rotation. They’ll be fine.

          @ramonskee
          If you need me to elaborate on what I mean by the white Sox poor defense, I guess you haven’t seen Eloy Jiménez or Y Grandal play this year.
          I could also ‘elaborated’ about the sorry state of their starting pitchers. Oh and in regard to their’bids’ for free agents – yeah they bid on them – they bid just enough to get publicity, not enough to sign any difference maker.

    Incredible how many non-COVID related injuries this team has had. I’ll chalk it up to bad luck but knowing Renteria is lacking in other areas makes you wonder if he’s not preparing this team properly.

    Flores has never appeared in the majors, so this would be his debut.

      Yes. Bernardo Flores has never pitched above the AA level for the White Sox. Apparently the author of this article was looking at his 2020 simulated stats on the Baseball Reference site: baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=flo…

    Per White Sox beat writer Scott Merkin on Twitter this morning: twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/1294652190599122944

    Leury Garcia will need surgery. October is the return for him, potentially. He severed the ligament in his thumb, per Renteria.

    Why does it feel like “shoulder soreness” is just a codeword for any Sox injury this year?

      @Priggs89

      And they are racking up those shoulder soreness injuries. When I said about a week ago I wouldn’t mind seeing Tyler Johnson pitch for the Sox this year, I wasn’t sure how realistic that was going to be. It seems more realistic by the week the way they keep getting injured.

    At least they are finally giving Flores a shot. They need a guy who was not top tier to emerge as a possible starter, and he may have best shot.
