Athletics Outright Daniel Mengden

By Connor Byrne | September 22, 2020 at 4:25pm CDT

The Athletics have outrighted hurler Daniel Mengden after he cleared waivers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com was among those to report.

The A’s previously designated the right-handed Mengden for assignment Sept. 20, which came a little over a month after his most recent appearance on Aug. 18. Mengden threw 12 1/3 innings of five-run ball earlier this year, but he spent time on the COVID-19 injured list before the A’s designated him.

Now 27, Mengden debuted in 2016 and emerged as a respectable piece of the A’s staff the next season. In fact, from 2017-18, Mengden combined for a 3.80 ERA/4.57 FIP with 5.73 K/9 and 1.99 BB/9 over 158 2/3 innings and 29 appearances (24 starts). Mengden’s output has dropped since that two-year stretch, though, largely because of a major increase in walk rate. He has issued 4.25 free passes per nine, logged 6.5 K/9 and posted a 4.63 ERA/4.85 FIP over 72 innings since 2019.

I’m legitimately surprised that no one claimed him.

What does that say about him?

I’d like to see the Astros sign him to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

I would have claimed him as the Royals and DFA’ed Matt Harvey

Carson Fulmer gets claimed by a different team every week but no one claimed Mengden? Weird.

He would be in a heated battle with Font for pitcher who gets to get blown up in the smallest of leverage situations.

Mengden has the Right to Reject the Assignment, due to his 4+ years of Service time, in favor of becoming a Free Agent. This article doesn’t mention if he accepted the Assignment or not. I know he is from the Houston area and was disappointed the Astros traded him away in the Scott Kazmir deal.

He didn’t opt out probably because of money. He still gets paid by letting the A’s outright him. No team is going to sign him with less than 10 games left.

He does not have 4 years of service time. He has 2.088.

He only has 2.088 years of service time. Pretty easy to look this stuff up.

He spent on injured list for 61 days this year, which is the same value as 171 days (61/66*186). He has now more than 3 years of service time, which allows him to reject outright assignment…

His mustache alone should have earned him a claim.
