Minor MLB Transactions: 09/19/20

By Anthony Franco | September 19, 2020 at 10:01pm CDT

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Red Sox have selected the contract of outfielder César Puello. Right-hander Zack Godley has been placed on the 45-day injured list, while infielder Yairo Muñoz went on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 18) with a lower back strain. The 29-year-old Puello only has 186 MLB plate appearances to his name, but he’s built a strong track record in Triple-A. In parts of five seasons at the minors’ highest level, Puello has put up a .292/.391/.446 line.

He was incredible in only about 10 games with the Angels last year.

Much less impressive in a slightly larger sample with the Marlins

This is about a Red Sox Prospect now that the Marlins & Angels gave up on him. He may make it through waivers and the Mets will have their chance.

Bloom will be back to a 40 man roster soon. I hope he opens at least 15 slots so we can be competitive in the FA market and be better than the third worst team in baseball.

The RSox are currently tied with Texas for the second worst record in Baseball.

      Not sure I’d call Puello a prospect, since he’s 29 years old….

Hard to believe he’s just 29.

IMO the Red Sox will add the following players due to the up coming Rule 5 draft.

      Jay Groome
      Tanner Houck (already done)
      Bryan Mata
      Hudson Potts
      Jeisson Rosario
      Connor Seabold
      Connor Wong
      Deivy Grullón

IMO the Red Sox will CUT the following players from the 40-man.

      Kickham
      Leyer
      Triggs
      Stock
      Godley
      Covey
      Hall
      Springs
      Brice
      Mazza
      Peraza

      and possibly
      Lin
      Hart
      Walden

There should be room for plenty of free agent additions. Some may be resign to minors

They will also non-tender Rusney Castillo. Or, at least they should.

Rusney has not been on the 40 man for years…so yes he is on a long list of minor league free agents

40-man or not, the accountants are well aware of Rusney. That’s a nice financial burden to be rid of.

Hell yes! It was $13 million this year and $72.5 million……

          Ben Cherington resume:

          Sandoval $95 million
          H. Ramirez $88 million
          Rusney C. $72.5 million
          Allen Craig $38 million

Total $293.5 million almost entirely wasted

          Four years:

          Three last place in division.
One WS (major carry by Ortiz, Lester, Lackey, Euhara)

Take Craig off the list (in my view) since the Lackey trade played a nice role in the 18 championship. That second half Kelly had was well worth the trade given the Kimbrel meltdown. A lot of money but the Sox likely don’t win without Kelly. It was a team pitching staff championship outside of just a couple of staff members.

Still $38 million wasted !!!! They could have couple Kelly with someone else and still make the trade.

Joe Kelly was average at best other than the 2018 playoffs. They traded for him to be a starter which he totally failed at…
          Red Sox career
          ERA 4.33
          WHIP 1.39
          Very average

That is like saying Eovaldi’s 2018 earn him a $68 million contract, and I do not know anyone happy with what Eovaldi has done the last two years.

Looie – with your logic you would probably say acquiring Brock Holt was worth giving up Mark Melancon…..

Melancon – 183 saves (since trade)
          VS
Holt – BA .270 OPS .708 (since since)

What you laid out is why I do not completely fault Dombrowski for today’s mess. Red Sox said they wanted to compete and he compounded the problem contracts with other big contracts. Getting both Hanley and Pablo was a head-scratcher as a Jays fan at the time.

“Oh we’ll move Hanley to LF he’ll be fine.”

          Sure he was….

Would the Sox make the trade again if they couldn’t tweak it? I say yes because Craig was a disappointment but at the time a change of scenery was all that was thought was needed. Sox don’t get Kelly without absorbing the Craig deal and the team expected Craig to play for them, not Pawtucket. You never trade back titles and as I said previously, they do not win without Kelly. Eovaldi was clearly an overpay but let’s see what happens in the last two years.

It was because some players simply can’t perform in North East major markets. It’s not likely he would have had similar success had the team not made the deal. Melancon was not highly regarded then and the trade was not considered big time. Sox didn’t give him the money like the Giants did they? They gave up Lowrie who was injury prone and then traded Melencon to the Pirates. Holt was the throw in and was clearly more valuable than Hanrahan. Sox lost that trade big time but at least salvaged it with Holt.

DD was hired to clean up Cherington’s mess of three last place finishes and several hundred million in dead money! Cherington made over $300 million in horrible moves (Hanley, Sandoval, Rusney, Allen Craig, Joel Hanrahan) ……DD won division title in 2016, 2017, 2018 and the series in 2018. He totally did what he was hired to do! I do not blame him (I blame Cherington for putting the team in that position), but it was time to move on from DD (Eovaldi and Steve Pearce were bad moves and the farm was depleted), and Bloom was the perfect choice to build the farm system and the team IMO. 2020 was the perfect year to rebuild.

No I would not have traded Lackey at all. He was signed for the next year at league minimum and still looked like he had plenty in the tank.

IMO the Red Sox still win the 2018 WS even without Kelly. He was good, but definitely not the deciding factor.

IMO Melancon would have contributed more than a utility player, and the $6 million wasted on Hanrahan (past his prime with increasing control problems) could have been better spent elsewhere. Cherington’s bad free agent moves and trades seemed unending!! Here we are in 2020 and finally are done with Sandoval. Cherington had a similar philosophy to Bloom, he just had no idea how to execute it.

It will be exciting to watch some of the prospects Bloom has traded for in Boston in the next couple years as they have looked outstanding against some mlb players in Pawtucket in the three weeks since the trades. The games are recorded, so there are plenty to watch.

I blame mostly ownership who used both BS and DD as scapegoats. Who really thinks the GMs have the authority to continuously spend?

We can agree to disagree. Sox caught a break when both Kelly and Barnes pitcher their best ball when Kimbrel stunk up the joint. Add in NE’s amazing relief performance which saved the pen and they were able to stay competitive for the bats to perform. A total team win in 18.

True test for Ben is the next three years with the Pirates. I do blame him for lousy trades but DD had his too. Free agency is mainly a team issue with ownership at the top of the blame.
