Minor MLB Transactions: 10/3/20

By Anthony Franco | October 3, 2020 at 9:58pm CDT

A trio of players appear ticketed for free agency this offseason after being outrighted off clubs’ rosters yesterday, per the MLB.com transactions log:

  • Cubs’ reliever Josh Osich cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. Chicago acquired Osich from the Red Sox at this year’s trade deadline, although he only wound up pitching in four games for them down the stretch. Osich combined for a 6.38 ERA in 18.1 innings for the two teams this year, although he did rack up an impressive 24:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • White Sox reliever Alex McRae also passed through the wire after being designated this week. McRae spent the first six seasons of his professional career in the Pirates’ organization before joining the Sox last offseason. He tossed three scoreless innings for the South Siders this year. McRae has a 7.50 ERA/7.09 FIP in 36 career MLB innings.
  • Also passing through waivers was Rangers’ infielder Yadiel Rivera. The 28-year-old utilityman was reported to have been designated for assignment in early September, but he instead reverted to the injured list after being diagnosed with an elbow injury. Rivera wound up having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his elbow, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reported late last month, and is expected to be out for five to six months. Rivera has just a .175/.244/.217 line in 319 MLB plate appearances across six seasons.

Cubs still owe a player for the marvelous help Osich gave.. Come to think of it.. None of the guys boston moved at the deadline were productive afterwards and Moreland/Workman surprised me. Rest were duds, but those 2 surprising.

Good points…and on top of that, the Red Sox had a better winning percentage after trading those guys.

All five players the Red Sox received were either (mlb ready – Pivetta 2-0 1.80 era) or top 20 prospects (Potts, Rosario, Seabold, Wallace)! Bloom gets an A+

Red Sox won 5 of their last 7 games and 11 of their last 20. That is a big improvement from 6 – 18 to start the season

          All about starting pitching:

          In 5 starts Houck was 3-0 era 0.53, Pivetta 2-0 era 1.80.

Replacing Hart era 15.55, Godley era 8.16, Kickham era 7.71, Brewer era 5.61….

If the Cubs want a solid lefty in their bullpen then they need Tony Watson. He’s kinda flown under the radar lately

yeah he was great for us this season, would have had an era under 2 if it weren’t for his last couple games. Only worry i could see would be age.

Never heard of this Alex McRae before, but I wonder if he’s related to Hal and Brian???

Yes, ptbn will probably be a lower level prospects from A ball, otherwise the trade would have already been completed

The way they’ve played the last few weeks it hard to make an argument that either
Chicago MLB team makes the playoffs over a 162 game season. Both GM’s should
go into this off-season with that understanding.
The Chi-Sox have a bonefied ace, #2, & arguablly one of the best closers in MLB.
Calome is not perfect & for that reason he has been battle tested time & again.
Without a doubt they have one of the best lineups in the game.
Only injuries weakened it in Sept, so with another 100 games I think it would
    have rebounded to dominance.
Outside of those 3 arms, there are some bright spots but more ? marks.
There’s no obvious separation between Dunning, Cease, & Lopez any more.
Both Rodon & Gonzo should prove bargains to sign as free agents.
Hahn should at least offer invites.
Hahn needs to target free agents/tradeable players that are stingy on walks.
Let Cooper decide whether the other flaws are fixable or not.
There’s been too much focus on velocity & not enough on control for too many years.

They should find a knuckle balling long man and really mess hitters up.
