Quick Hits: LeMahieu, Angels, Dombrowski, Pino, Crawford

By Mark Polishuk | October 22, 2020 at 11:21pm CDT

Don’t count on a reunion between DJ LeMahieu and the Rockies.  Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post recently contacted “those close to LeMahieu” to gauge the chances of the free agent returning to his former team, and “was told that while [LeMahieu is] keeping his options open, he doesn’t see the Rockies as a good fit for him.”  LeMahieu spent seven seasons with the Rox from 2012-18, a stretch that saw him make three All-Star appearances, win two Gold Gloves, and capture the 2016 NL batting title.

After leaving Coors Field to sign with the Yankees in the 2018-19 offseason, however, LeMahieu hit another level, posting MVP-type numbers over his two seasons in the Bronx.  It’s certainly possible that LeMahieu simply remains in New York, though several teams are bound to inquire about his services — that is to say, teams with more available payroll and perhaps closer to immediate contention than the Rockies.

As we await tomorrow’s Game 3 of the World Series, some more from around the baseball world…

  • Multiple reports linked Dave Dombrowski was a favorite to take over the Angels’ front office, though after almost a month, there hasn’t been much new information on that front.  In fact, in an appearance on Jon Heyman’s Big Time Baseball podcast (audio link), USA Today’s Bob Nightengale believes Dombrowski will “absolutely not” end up in Anaheim.  Both Heyman and Nightengale think Dombrowski might remain in Nashville, where he is part of a group vying to bring an expansion team to the Music City, with Nightengale opining that the Phillies could also potentially be a fit for Dombrowski as a win-now team.  As for the Angels’ job, Nightengale thinks their search is “wide open“at this point.  Earlier reports have suggested that the Angels are just beginning their search, and Nightengale thinks a new front office boss might not be in place until close to Thanksgiving.
  • 16-year-old Cuban outfielder Luis Pino worked out for scouts this week in the Dominican Republic, and ESPN.com’s Enrique Rojas (Spanish language link) reports that the Athletics and Rays are the favorites to land Pino when the international signing window opens on January 15.  The Giants, Cubs, White Sox, Red Sox and Padres have also shown interest in Pino, who seems likely to command a bonus of $1MM or more.
  • Longtime Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2020, rebounding from a down year both offensively and defensively in 2019.  As NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic notes, Crawford’s return to form solidified the Giants’ shortstop situation, and the team can now be more confident that Crawford can still be a productive player as he heads into his age-34 campaign.  2021 will also be the final year of Crawford’s contract with San Francisco, however, and the Giants have a star shortstop prospect in Marco Luciano coming down the pipeline.  Luciano could potentially be ready for a regular role by 2022, so it remains to be seen if Crawford will only be a bridge to Luciano or if the veteran could potentially still land another deal to stay in the orange and black.

Rockies burned their bridge with LeMahieu when they paid Murphy the same amount as DJ.

Wow you must really hate Crawford to say that. He did hit respectful numbers this year. His defense is no longer gold glove but is average at SS. You must hate Solano at 2B because that guy can’t play any defense at all. Now that is somebody you should complain about on defense.

Murphy might be the worst defensive 1B I’ve seen since the first DH, Ron Blomberg. And they’re still looking for DJ’s permanent replacement. Total misfire by the front office. The team these last two years would have been totally different with DJ. For one thing, that miserable start in 2019 might not have happened.

They’ve been the last team eliminates like 4 of the past 6 seasons. The Angels have been more unlucky than bad.

Move Oakland there first. They sit in a massive media market with a terrible stadium that gets worse every year and few fans. They will never get a new stadium in the East Bay and can’t move to the South Bay. IIRC the last two seasons they didn’t even bother to broadcast their games on the radio.

It’s only a matter of time before MLB and Fisher wave the flag. Actually, I’m sure Fisher would jump the second he could get another city to commit.

Have you been sleeping the last few years. They are about to build their new stadium. It would have started if it were not for Covid. Almost everything has been approved for the new stadium. They did broadcast their games on radio for 2020. Sounds like you live in Tampa and want to blame another team.

You cannot completely blame fans who cannot get to the games or even out of the games if it’s a sell out. Built in a horrible location. Stadium isn’t horrible (no matter what people say), but getting to and from Tampa to st Pete much less Orlando to St Pete. Couple that with the city wants the owners to pay for most and the owners want the city to pay for most. Takes a lot longer for a tourist trap to build a consistent fan base but we are getting there and we support our team. Tired of people bashing the rays. They are better than most teams in MLB on any day. If they were still the crappy devil rays nobody would care if they were here. They are good so they should move. Politicians are screwing it up for us in Tampa and a lease deal that St Pete won’t let the Rays out of. The original owners signed a crappy lease that is killing any chance for the Rays to stay. A 37 year lease. That’s not on the fans

Oh please… They haven’t broken ground nor have they gotten final approval to do so. The last thing that has happened is they purchased Alameda County’s half of the Coliseum property. They are trying to buy the other half from the city of Oakland. Good luck with that. Oakland won’t give them the steal they got from the county.

They are still in discussions for APPROVAL of the Howard Terminal park, and it has to go in front of the City Council next spring. How many times has the city turned them down now? Two? Three? This is the same city that let the Raider and Warriors leave, mind you.

I live in the Bay Area, and I didn’t know they had a radio contract. It sure was huge news when they pulled out of 95.7 and decided to stream their games instead of investing in a radio contract.

In regards to Crawford, it should be pointed out that Luciano is unlikely to stick at SS. I’d bet his MLB debut comes at a position other than SS.

And also Luciano just turned 19 and has very limited innings above rookie league. He’s probably not arriving until 2023 after losing game reps this year.

Agreed, but there is no way the Giants keep Crawford after the upcoming season. Zaidi can find a cheaper stopgap with more potential than a 35-year old who will start to have injury issues and slowing bat speed.

Yeah, I agree with both of you guys. Whatever the Giants can get out of a declining Crawford is a bonus, and it was great to see him turn in a good season, but he’s not the answer after this season.

Crawford was productive over the second half of the 60-game season, but it would be foolish to expect that over however many games they play in 2021. Even Crawford must realize that. Spot duty in ’21 as the team transitions toward a full-time solution. I see that guy being Carlos Correa. Unlike many Dodgers fans, I really like Correa as a player. Supremely talented, a take-charge guy in the infield, comes from a winning background (as fans, we all need to put the scandal behind us). Correa is like Seager in that both missed considerable time with injuries but seem completely healthy now. He would certainly add spark to the rivalry. Not a bad thing.

Correa’s back is already on the decline. No thanks. A’s could have had their stadium situation resolved if they wanted to. Owners are one of the wealthiest in the game, and they continue to try and squeeze the city of Oakland. It’s why Fremont wanted no part of them.

I’d love to see DJ as a brave. I wanted him a couple years ago. I fully understand there isn’t exactly a great place to play him… maybe 3B move Riley to the OF or maybe a DH. But the guy a swing it. Again, he’s not a prefect fit for the braves nor will the braves match the money it will take to get him here even if he was

His ability to play multiple positions makes him more valuable. Versatility allows teams to overcome injuries when they occur (as they always do). And he won’t hurt with the glove regardless of where you put him. A real baseball player.

Signing DJ would be awesome. I’d be fine with Riley in the OF or used to trade for another starting pitcher. I think Ozuna is gone but if they could get DJ and/or Cruz, that offense would be unstoppable.

I really wonder if you’d get anything for Riley at this point….his game doesnt translate well to todays game – Maybe the 80’s Tigers would swoon over him but I dont think youd get what hes worth in a trade- Id hold and try and cut down on that swing a little….he’s bacially a mistake pitch hitter right now thats an easy out if the pitcher executes

If the Angels don’t have a front office in place until around Thanksgiving, how the hell do they expect to sign any top free agents??? Isn’t that timeframe like 2-3 weeks into free agency??

To me this is a sign the Angels wont be in on top tier players, just second/third tier guys.

    Hope I’m wrong on this…

I see that Giants adding one of the top SS in the free agency class after ‘21. Everything I’ve read suggests Luciano won’t stick at short and I bet Crawford ends up taking a reduced roll deal to stick in San Francisco.
