AL Notes: Gallo, Rays, Angels

By Connor Byrne | December 18, 2020 at 8:50pm CDT

Rangers slugger Joey Gallo has been “available” since last summer’s trade deadline, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes. It’s unknown what it would cost to pry Gallo out of Texas, though Rosenthal notes that he’s popular among teams that value some combination of home runs, walks, athleticism and tools. The 27-year-old Gallo had a terrible year at the plate during the shortened 2020 season, in which he hit .181/.301/.378 with 10 home runs in 226 plate appearances, but he did earn a Gold Glove for his work in right field. Gallo’s also not far removed from a premier showing at the plate in 2019, and he comes with two affordable years of team control.

Now the latest on two other American League teams…

  • The Rays are among the teams with interest in free-agent right-hander Ryne Stanek, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Stanek began his career with the Rays, who chose him 29th overall in the 2013 draft, and had his best seasons with the club. He was a regular opener with the Rays from 2018-19, during which he pitched to a 3.17 ERA/3.64 FIP and averaged better than 10 strikeouts per nine across 122 innings, but has fallen off of late. Stanek had difficulty in Miami, which acquired him from the Rays before the 2019 trade deadline, and the Marlins non-tendered him as a result. However, the 29-year-old hasn’t had trouble garnering interest from other teams this winter.
  • Rays righty Brent Honeywell was given a fourth option because of the substantial amount of time he has missed on account of injuries, general manager Erik Neander told Topkin and other reporters. The 25-year-old Honeywell was once an elite pitching prospect, but he hasn’t thrown a professional inning since 2017 – which he divided between Double-A and Triple-A – because of health issues. Since then, Honeywell has undergone four elbow surgeries, most recently an arthroscopic procedure. The good news is that Honeywell seems as if he’ll return in 2021.
  • The Angels have made a couple of additions to new general manager Perry Minasian’s front office. The team’s hiring Brewers vice president/assistant to the GM Ray Montgomery and Dodgers international crosschecker Brian Parker, per reports from Joel Sherman of the New York Post and Jim Callis of MLB.com. It’s unclear which roles the two will take on as part of the Angels’ staff.
  • More on the Angels, who are unsurprisingly looking for help in their rotation. Manager Joe Maddon told MLB Network Radio on Friday that “we do need to attract probably two starting pitchers to come to us.” Maddon expects there to be an increase in six-man rotations throughout the league next year; if the Angels go that route – which is something Maddon expects to do (via Maria Torres of the LA Times) – it could benefit Shohei Ohtani, who’s returning from injury and who was part of a six-man staff in Japan before immigrating to the majors prior to the 2018 campaign. Ohtani, Dylan Bundy, Andrew Heaney and Griffin Canning should amass plenty of starts for the Angels in 2021, though the rest of their rotation doesn’t appear etched in stone.

Riley is close to Gallo in terms of raw power. He hit one 470 feet this past season and hit one 494 ft in the minors. Riley is one of the strongest guys in baseball he just strikes out too much.

Come on now. I’m a Braves fan and I think that’s disingenuous toward Gallo. Doesn’t mean I think he is someone the Braves should go after though. Hits for power and has a great glove. That makes him a starting OF on just about any team but the Braves already strike out to much. One of their concerns should be reducing K’s without decreasing power.

But then your only offering one year of team control. Indians haven’t found a suitor for Lindor yet because they missed the best chance to trade him last off season now any team that trades for him is only getting one year of team control. Same happened to Padres with Chase Headley. Rangers missed there shot last year as well. Might still get something though who knows?

As y’all know, Chris Young is my father. After talking with him the other day, he told me that him and JD were talking to Dombro the other day on a Gallo trade. He said this is what they came up with:

    Rangers get: Stott, Medina, Morales

Phillies get: Gallo, Leclerc, + international money, and a PTBNL

Young told me that the only way that they’d get rid of Leclerc is if Dombro threw in the PTBNL and the international money. He said that Leclerc is too good to sell on him right after an injured season, so he wanted to throw in the PTBNL so that we could get a good prospect mid season.

What do y’all think of Young’s trade proposal?

Geez, 2 years of Gallo coming off a horrible year and 3 years of Leclerc coming off a 2 IP year (after a miserable 2019) and you get PHI’s #2, 4, 5…? They don’t have a loaded system but I’d be hard-pressed to trade either of their top-3. Certainly wouldn’t include Abel. Power is cheaper to replace than it once was. Pass.

I’m not saying Adell is another Trout. But lets not trade away guy because of what happened thisCovid-19 year. Maybe any other year he would not have been called up.

Adell MiLB stats are NOT close to Trout MiLB stats…let alone their respective first seasons small 100-120 AB sample size. So far he’s overhyped.

Adell needed all of 2020 in AAA and then “maybe” he shines in 2021 spring training and starts 2021 at AAA til he proves it’s time for a call up.

WHY? I swear people think Adell is the worst player ever now that he came up and struggled in his shortened, rookie, corona-filled season. Now everyone thinks that Marsh is the 2nd coming of Jesus. I know for a fact that if Marsh was the 1st one to come up, and he struggled, fans would say that Adell is the 2nd coming of Jesus. Don’t be so rash.

I’m not hating on Adell, but statistically I just don’t see anything (so far) measuring up to the hype of being a top 3-6 MLB prospect.

He went from A ball to AAA in 2019. That stands out. 4 of 5 tools are plus. That stands out. There is a reason he was a top 5 prospect in baseball going into the 2020 season and a crazy Covid filled, shortened season doesn’t change that. Adell is a stud that needs to play a full season in Anaheim to see what they have. Trading him now would be stupid.

But as soon as a young player shows any imperfections are struggles it’s “he sucks trade him for a bag of balls”, HOTTAKES!. I certainly recall all the Judge for Quintana stuff. How about the way Frazier was repeatedly dragged through the mud because he was “immature”.

Its going to take a lot more than that especially since you’re not allowed to trade more cash than the player makes. The Angels do not have the prospects to pry Bieber from the Indians and that would be including Adell and Marsh in the deal

Guess how much of a package you have to put together in BTV in order to pry Bieber from Cleveland… This:

        Indians get: Trout, Marsh, Adell

        Angels get: NOTHING!!!

        GOTCHA!!!

Bieber is actually one of the few players on BTV that are literally un-tradeable. You can’t even propose a trade with him in it because it is physically impossible for him to be traded. Him, Soto, and a few others are in that elite category of being great and cheap simultaneously.

I like this idea. Saves Cleveland money and gives the Angels a dependable 2 type starter. Without losing Adell or Marsh most likely.

I’d rather just sign Casili than trade more talent, but a catcher in that deal would work.

Players like Gallo are exactly what’s wrong in our game. He’s hit over .210 once in 6 years with twice as many strikeouts than hits.

Subtract out his homeruns and his k to hit totals are embarrassing. But there are many who want to ignore certain stats and focus on others.

    200 k’s a year, 50 hits that aren’t homeruns a year, 70 walks a year. He’s barely a 1 WAR player with all those homeruns.

Hits are under rated, homeruns are overpaid.

He was a 3+ WAR player in 2019 in only 70 games.
He won a gold glove in 2020.
Mike trout led the league in strike outs in 2014 when he won the MVP award.
I would take the guy who can go yard at any time with a decent OBP and gold glove defense with a rocket for an arm over a guy who can barely play 2B and hits .285 mainly just scrapping singles across the board, mainly vs the 3-5 SP and middle relievers during a blow out game.

Gallo is the new Chris Davis. “Raw power” is useless when you strike out 200 times and can’t hit .210. But teams will keep paying him. Would you rather have a team of Joey Gallo’s or Mark Grace’s hitting 1-9? It’s sad,but no team today would even look at hitters like Grace, Keith Hernandez, Ozzie Smith…high contact hitters without big power don’t even get invited to camp anymore. A guy today hits .285 without a bunch of homers and he doesn’t even play because baseball thinks .210 with 175 k and 20 homers is producing wins.

Gallo has struck out more than 175 times in a season twice. Both years he hit 40 homeruns, not 20.
He also had an OPS of 800+ with a 2.5-3 WAR.
He followed that up with a .986 ops 145+ OPS plus in an injury shortened season.
Had a down year last year like many other but still won a gold glove.
      He’s got a cannon too.

Have you heard of Nick Madrigal?

Or David Fletcher or Luis Arraez or Jose Iglesias? Jeff McNeil, Nick Solak, and Tommy La Stella could also be described as high contact hitters without big power.

You are right that most people have concluded that trading some strikeouts for more home runs (which guarantee that runs are scored) is often worth it, especially if the player can also get a lot of walks (because pitchers are afraid of giving up a HR) and still have a good OPB. It checks out. But there are still contact hitters without a lot of power in the game.

As long as the Halos get at least 2 or 3 decent starting pitchers then I would consider this off season a success for Perry. And IF Ohtani can be even close to his rookie season then that would be a huge boost for the rotation. We just really, really need an ace for once. I think the last time we had a top of the rotation piece and real Cy Young candidate was Weaver. Like a long, long time ago in a galaxy far….far away. Get it done Perry! I like the comment and idea of Bauer and Snell. That would make us contenders…but at what cost?

Angels better not wait till last minute like always and sign everybody’s leftovers and has beens… Make your moves first and put pressure on everybody else.. plus have enough time to see who else is still available! Confident in Perry tho as a lifelong Angels fan

Angels will sign Bauer and get Snell in a trade. That puts that in playoff talks.

Lol srdiaz, if they get both those pitchers, just a playoff appearance would be a disappointment.

It’s all good! The Angels are better off trading for Snell or Grey, over spending most there allotted money on 1 pitcher.
