Giants Re-Sign Chadwick Tromp

By Connor Byrne | December 9, 2020 at 12:34pm CDT

Dec. 9: The Giants have announced the deal, which is a Major League contract for Tromp.

Dec. 8: Catcher Chadwick Tromp announced on Twitter that he has re-signed with the Giants (h/t: Maria Guardado of MLB.com). The Giants non-tendered Tromp last week.

Tromp spent his first several professional seasons with the Reds, but he signed a minor league contract with the Giants last offseason and earned a major league opportunity. The 25-year-old finished second among Giants in games played (19) and batted .213/.219/.426 in 64 plate appearances in 2020. While Tromp did hit four home runs over that small sample size, a 20:1 K:BB ratio led to a poor overall line. Defensively, though, Tromp threw out 2-of-6 would-be base stealers (which aligns with his 33 percent rate in the minors) and, according to Statcast, finished in the league’s 67th percentile as a pitch framer.

While Tromp is surely hoping to continue as a major leaguer in 2021, it could be more of an uphill battle than it was this year. After all, starting catcher Buster Posey may return after opting out of the 2020 season. The Giants also still have prized prospect Joey Bart, who led their catchers in games played this past campaign, though it’s possible they will elect to send him to the minors and give the season-opening backup role to Tromp.

Bart is nowhere close to being a legit big league catcher. Not yet. And his bat? He looked lost at the plate. Big long swing. His strikeout to AB ratio was ugly

Bart looked awful every game I watched but sss and he does project well. He just wasn’t ready yet. He’s just a kid as catchers go. Tromp is a fine backup option and gives Bart time to tune his game at AAA. Bart must play every day and must not be rushed.

According to Baseball-Reference.com, Tromp threw out two of six attempted steals. That’s a 33% rate which is good. However, it isn’t 4 out of 6 attempts as noted in the article. That would be a phenomenal 67% throw out percentage..

Makes sense for Bart’s development. Also this is good for our roster management, as we keep an extra 40 man spot by signing him to a minor league contract. And then come spring training when Beede goes back on the 60 day we can slide Tromp in there.

I’ve got these guys coming up to me, tears in their eyes, large, huge men, and they’re crying. They say, “Mr. President, Sir, no one has ever re-signed a Giant before, thank you for bringing our backup catcher back.” It’s beautiful how many players we’re looking at, just beautiful. No one ever believed we could do it, nobody has seen anything like what we’re doing, and it’s a real shame. So we’re going to be looking into it very strongly.

Drafting a catcher is the hardest position for scouts to get correct. There’s just so much that can go wrong in their minors’ development. Hopefully Bart will turn into a premier #1 catcher but the early results don’t look great. Meanwhile, Piazza turns into a hall of famer being drafted after Round 50! Teams still continue to consistently draft catching prospects in the 1st round for some reason. The kid from Miami will probably go high in this year’s draft too but he’ll end up moving to 1B. He’s all bat in college which doesn’t bode well for the majors.

but you’re just wasting that $500,000 then. not a lot, but if you are going to non-tender and resign the guy for a few thousand then i assume you wouldnt want to waste hundreds of thousands.

          DarkSide830:

Not sure how you see them wasting $500,000. I think it’s safe to assume, since they did not sign him to a minor’s deal after non-tendering him, that reason was to save money, and sign him for less than they would had owed him had be been tendered.

The fact that it is a major league deal indicates they want Tromp to be Posey’s back-up in 2021. If they preferred someone else as back-up, and wanted him for minor league depth, they would have signed him to a minor league deal.

The deal wasn’t about that, it was about signing him for less money. They guaranteed the contract with the major league deal, because they clearly want him as Posey’s back-up in 2021, not as minor league depth.

Yeah, you’re right about not saving money, But I stand by the reason for the ML deal. He’s their back up, not just for MiL depth. Why they went about it the way did is a mystery, but there must have been some reason we don’t know about.

As DarkSide and hopper mentioned above, what’s getting missed here is that they gave Tromp a ML contract and roster spot and not a minor league contract. That should tell us more about their plans for Bart in ’21 than anything else to date. They aren’t planning on elevating him anytime soon, and giving him all season to calibrate to AAA instead of any more penalty from being rushed too soon last season. That’s good.

But it also may mean he misses out on Buster in ’21, and with Patrick Bailey and Genoves already in the pipeline, the placement of Tromp onto the ’21 major-league roster may signal more than we know.

Are minor league contracts even viable for this upcoming season? They weren’t worth much more than a weekly $300 check for part of 2020.

Tromp can get released at any point if/when they feel Bart is ready. Back in September, Zaidi publicly stated they expect Bart to start the year in the minors.

It would be great if Bart could get tutoring from Posey, but that’s a waste of a 26-man spot when Bart is clearly not ready. I was surprised he was called up last season after only 22 games at AA and zero at AAA. Catchers need more time, and usually get it, than any other position player.

The minors are all about learning and the majors are about producing. The Giants are taking the long view. Bart will probably become a better catcher later on starting at Sacramento on a regular basis, and getting instruction, than sitting on the bench in SF, getting only the occasional start, and having to focus on producing.

Yankees should return Gleyber to second, trade for Lindor (SS), and give Cleveland: Andujar, Cessa or Green, and Ford (so Sanchez can occasionally play first and Voit DH).
